Biography* Mary Curtis Durband, 1899-1988:
Mary was born, reared and educated in Lincoln township, Sioux County, Iowa. She graduated from Hull High School in Lincoln County in 1918. Mary went on to earn a teacher's certificate from Morningside College in Sioux City and taught in rural schools near Hull and Struble in Plymouth County until her marriage to Edward Durband in 1927. The couple farmed in the Struble, Hull and LeMars areas. In the fall of 1971 they retired and moved to Remsen. Mary was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Third Order of Saint Francis Christian Mothers, Catholic Daughters of America, Ladles Catholic Order of Foresters and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Mary, 88, of Remsen, died on a Friday at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars after a brief illness. The funeral was held on Tuesday at Saint Mary's Catholic church in Remsen. Rev. Dennis Sefcik officiated. Mary was survived by three sons, one daughter, 18 grandschildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Ted (Julia) Nussbaum of LeMars and Mrs. James (Mildred) Murphy of Spearfish, South Dakota. She was preceded by her parents; her husband Edward on April 14, 1973; a son, two brothers, her twin brother James in infancy and Edwin, at the age of 3; two half-brothers Angelo S. Quinn and Merrill Curtis. Pallbearers were Randy Durband, Dennis, James, Steven and Thomas Gengler and Steven Van Huis. Fisch Funeral Home was in charge.

Biography* Julia T. Curtis Nussbaum, 1906-2001:
Julia was the sixth of seven children and the second daughter. The two oldest children, both sons, were half-siblings one born to each parent by previous marriages. Julia grew up on a farm in Lincoln township and graduated high school by 1924. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City. After that Julia taught school in Plymouth County for a time. In 1927 she was married to Theodore Nussbaum at Le Mars by the Rev. L. J. Cooper, a Catholic priest, before witnesses Edward Durband and her sister Mary Curtis. Afterward, Julia and Theodore lived in Le Mars, Plymouth County. In 1930, they were renting at 135 First Avenue in the 2nd ward for $16/month. By 1940, they owned a $1,200 house at 326 Second Avenue also in the 2nd ward. Theodore died in 1978 and circa 1998m Julia became a resident of Plymouth Manor in Le Mars. She was a member of Saint James Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers Society.

Julia, 94, died on a Sunday at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars following a lengthy illness. Survivors included four daughters; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Julia was preceded in death by four brothers, Angelo Quinn, Merrill J. Curtis and two brothers in infancy; two sisters, Mary Durband and Mildred Murphy. Services were held Thursday at Saint James Catholic Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Richard Ries officiated.

Biography* Mildred Celeste Curtis Murphy, 1908-1999:
Mildred was the youngest of seven and the third daughter. The two oldest children, both sons, were half-siblings one born to each parent by previous marriages. Mildred grew up on a farm in Lincoln township. After graduating from Hull high school in 1926, she entered a nursing program at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. Mildred graduated in 1929. In 1930, she was rooming at 1919 Jackson Street, a triplex, in Sioux City and was working as a nurse. The apartment was occupied by four people. The head of household was also a nurse and the other two worked in a bank. Mildred continued working as a nurse until she married James Murphy in 1936 when she was living at 2423 Court Street in Sioux City. After their marriage, she and James lived in Leeds, Lawrence County, South Dakota. In 1940, they were renting at 312 Fifth Avenue SE in Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa for $20/month. In 1944, when her father died, Mildred and James, were living in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. By the following year, they they had moved to Elk Point, Union County, South Dakota. In 1950, Mildred's mother Anna Curtis was living with them. Mildred's mother died in 1954. In 1959 Mildred and James moved to Fort Lauderale, Florida. James died in 1964 amd in 1974 she moved to Spearfish, Lawrence County, South Dakota and lived with her daughter Kathleen and son-in-law Michael Brown. In 1979, when her brother Angelo Quinn died, they were living in Sturgis, Meade County, South Dakota. When Mildred's sister Mary Durband died in 1988, they were living in Spearfish again. In 1994 Mildred moved to Rapid City, South Dakota and lived with her daughter Patricia and son-in-law Arthur K ''Bucky'' O'Connor. Mildred was a member of Blessed Sacrament church and Catholic Daughters of America.

Mildred, 81, died on a Wednesday at McKennan hospital in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. She was survived by daughters Patricia O'Connor of Rapid City, Kathleen Brown of Sioux Falls, sister Julia Nussbaum of LeMars, Iowa, 7-grandchildren and 4-great-grandchildren. Mildred was preceded by her parents, husband James, brothers Merril Curtis and Angelo Quinn and sister Mary Durband. The funeral was held on Monday at Blessed Sacrament church wth the Rev Michel Mulloy presiding. She was buried with her husband James. Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City was in charge.
