John was a first generation Irish-American. Born in Columbia County, New York, he had an older sibling born in Delaware County.
A well known and popular resident of the second ward, John died on a Monday at age 37. He had been taken with the grip a few weeks before and pneumonia developed. He rapidly failed after that and his heart stopped. He was survived by his wife and five small children. The funeral was held on Wednesday from his 214 State Street residence and then from Saint Mary's. John's tombstone lists his birth year as 1860. |
