Biography* Maria "Mary" Gerber, 1875-1971:
According to her obituary, Mary was born near Butzberg, Switzerland on 23 September 1876. The date, if not the place, is at odds with Aarwangen civil records which list the date as the 25th. She came to the United States in 1881, with her mother and siblings, in the company of her uncle Otto. Her father had come several years earlier. The family located on a farm in Grant Township, two miles southeast of Lennox. She attended rural school, grew to womanhood, and continued to live on the home farm for 42 years. In 1922, she and her father moved to Lennox.

Mary made two trips back to her native Switzerland, the last in 1917 when she had to remain several months longer than planned because of World War I. She raised her nephews John Troyer, Clarence Troyer and Howard Gerber. For four years her great-nephew Marlyn G. Troyer made his home with her. She lived alone for many years after her father died, and in July 1969, she moved into the Good Samaritan Center, 112 West 3rd, Lennox. Mary belonged to the Second Reformed church and was active in the Philathea Guild.

Mary, age 94, died on a Tuesday morning of congestive heart failure and arteriosclerotic heart disease. She had been in good health until 30 December 1970 when she fell and broke her hip. Mary was hospitalized at the time and since then her health steadily declined. Mary was survived by a brother, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, a sister and three brothers, two of whom died in childhood. Funeral services were held on Friday from the Second Reform church with the Rev. Calvin Tysen officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Timmerman were the vocalists while Mrs. Calvin Tysen was the organist. Pallbearers were Robert Troyer, Marlyn Troyer, John C. Gerber, Robert Smidt, Lloyd Hammerstrom, and Howard Gerber.

Biography* Gottfried J. "Godfrey" "Ole" Gerber, 1879-1951:
In 1879 or 1880, Godfrey's father "John" left the family in their native Switzerland and came, with the father's brother Otto, to the United States. In 1881, uncle Otto returned to Switzerland and brought Godfrey, his mother and siblings to be reunited with the father. Godfrey attended local schools in Lennox and grew to be a man of short height and slender build, with blue eyes and dark hair. To people familiar with him, he was known as "Ole". His wife Martha died in 1919 and Godfrey was left to raise their two-year-old son. Sometime in late 1920, he gave up farming and moved into Lennox where he was employed as a clerk. At one time he was a member of the Lennox municipal band.

Godfrey died on a Thursday from a heart attack at age 71. He had just left the post office and was entering his automobile when the attack occurred. Godfrey was survived by his son, a sister, and a brother. Funeral services were held on Monday from the Dindot & Son funeral home and then from the Second Reformed church with the Rev. R. Denekas, pastor, officiating.
