Biography* John Henry Green, 1880-1951:
John, a first generation Irish-American, was the second of eight children born to Joseph Green and Margaret Leonard. And the second son. In 1900, he was the oldest of the seven children living with four brothers and two sisters. The family had moved to Worcester and was renting at 6 Grafton Street Place in the 4th ward. John, with an 8th grade education, was working as a shoemaker. Circa 1904, he went to work on the Boston and Albany Railroad as a brakeman. In 1910 John was working on a freight train. By 1920, the family had moved to 19 Arthur Street. He registered for the World War I draft in 1918. John listed his mother, with whom he lived, as his nearest relative. He was described as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair. In 1922, at the age of 41, John married Maria Looby, a lady who was previously married to a Hartnett and had at least one child, a daughter. In 1930, John and Maria were renting at 17 Wellington Street in Worcester's 8th ward for $75/month and had three roomers. In 1939, John worked 52-weeks and earned wages of $1,800. In 1940, they were renting an apartment at 91 Murray Avenue and again had three lodgers. John worked 48-hours the weekending 30 March. In 1942, at age 61, John registered for the World War II draft. He was described as being 5-feet-6½-inches tall, weighing 180-pounds with blue eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion. He retired in 1950 after 46-years with the railroad.

A resident of 765 Main Street, John died in City Hospital on a Saturday at age 70. He was survived by two sisters - Mrs Margaret J Brigham and Catherine T (Mrs Edward E) Devlin both of Worcester, five brothers - Joseph P of Lynn, Edward S, Arthur L, Thomas F and Herbert L Maguire all of Worcester, and several nieces and nephews [John's wife Maria, who died in the same year (date unknown), and step-daughter were not mentioned]. The funeral was held on Tuesday from the James E. Fay funeral home, 9 Hammond Street, with high mass at St. Paul's cathedral.

Biography* Joseph Patrick Green, 1883-1961:
Born in Woburn, when Joseph was about nine-years-old the family moved to Worcester. In 1900, Joseph was the second oldest of the seven of eight chidren still living. He had an older brother, three younger brothers and two younger sisters. The family was living at 6 Grafton Street Place in the 4th ward. In that year 1900, the 17-yeard-old Joseph, with an 8th grade education, was working as a bookkeeper. By the time of his 1909 marriage to Fannie Lawler he had moved to Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts and was living at 103 Liberty Street. By 1910, Joseph and Fannie were renting an apartment, one of four, at 97 Essex in Lynn's 3rd ward. He was working as a bookkeepeer for limestone contractors Shea & Donnelly Company. By 1919, Joseph was managing an office for the company at 28 Harbor and they owned a mortgaged house at 331 Eastern Ave also in the 3rd ward. In 1930, the house was valued at $8,000. In 1937, he was listed as a field engineer working on a WPA school project6 He worked 52-weeks that year and earned wages of $2,400. In 1942, when Joseph registered for the World War II draft, at age 59, he had a telephone, was 5'-8'' in height, weighed 140 pounds, had blue eyes, brown hair, a light complexion and a scar on his left shin. He was employed at the E. F. Badger Company, 75 Pitts Street in Boston. Circa 1944, he was hired as an accountant at Stone & Webster in Boston retiring circa 1956. Joseph was member of the Elks and was a past exalted ruler of the lodge.

Joseph, age 76, died at home on a Tuesday of arteriosclerotic heart disease. He was survived by wife Frances (Lawler), son Leonard J. of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, daughter E. Davis Green of Lynn, brother Edward and sisters Mrs Margaet Brigham and Mrs Catherine Devlin of Worcester. The funeral was held Friday from Saint Joseph's Catholic church in Lynn. T. W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 67 Ocean Street, was in charge.

  6. We can surmise from that series of events that Joseph lost his job due to the depression and was rescued by the WPA. The WPA or Works Progress Administration was a government scheme to create jobs for the unemployed. It started in May of 1935 and was disbanded in June of 1943, eight years later.

A first generation Irish-American, Margaret was the fourth of eight born to Joseph Green and Margaret Leonard and the oldest daughter. The family moved from Woburn to Worcester when she was about seven years old. in 1900, they lived at 6 Grafton Street Place and Margaret had six living siblings. Two older brothers, three younger brothers and one sister. In 1910, the family lived at 10 Grafton Street Place and Margaret, age 24, was foready at a shoe shop. Later that year she was married to Frederick Brigham by Catholic priest Michael T. Slattery. In 1920, the couple was renting an apartment in her parent's duplex at 19 Arthur Street and had two children. Margaret's father died in 1928. The Brigham's were living in the apartment in 1930 and were paying her mother $25/month. By 1935 they had moved into a duplex apartment at 33 Arthur Street. In 1937, her own husband Frederick died. In 1940, six adults were living in the apartment: Margaret, her two children, a son-in-law and two of her brothers. The rent was $30/month. Later she moved to the Wexford Village Apartments at 13 Duncannon Avenue to live with her daughter and family.

Margaret, 90, died in Shrewsbury Nursing Home on a Sunday after a short illness. Margaret was survived by one son, one daughter and son-in-law, one sister Mrs Catherine T. Devlin of Worcester, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral was held from the James E. Fay funeral home, 9 Hammond Street, followed by mass at St. Stephen's church, 361 Grafton Street.

Biography* Edward E. Green, 1888-1974:
Edward was the fifth of eight born to Joseph Green and Margaret Leonard and the fourth son.
In 1917, when he egistered for the WWI draft, Edward was living at 10 Grafton Street in Worcester with his parents. Edward was described as being of medium height with a stout build, blue eyes and dark brown hair. He was employed as a chauffer for L. F. St. Martin at Whitcomb Blaisdell Madune Norton Grinding and Tool Company. After his mother died in 1934, Edward lived with his sister Margaret and her husband Frederick Brigham at 33 Arthur Street in Worcester. Edward worked in the mechanical department of the Worcester Bus Company for 30-years, mostly as a chauffer, retiring in 1954. He was a member of Division 22, Amalgamated Transit Union.

A resident of 27 Brantwood Road, Edward, 85, died in Saint Vincent Hospital on a Wednesday. He was survived by his wife Mary C. Farrell, two sisters Mrs Margaret Brigham and Mrs Catherine T. Devlin of Worcester. Edward's funeral was held from the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster Street, followed by mass at Christ the King church, 1056 Pleasant Street.

Catherine was the sixth of eight children and the second daughter. She and six siblings grew up on Grafton Street Place in Woburn, Massachusetts. In 1910, at the age of 19, she and her sister Margaret, five-years-older, were working in a shoe shop. By 1920, the family was living at 19 Arthur Street. Catherine, 28, single and living at home, was working as a stitcher in a shoe factory. Her brother Thomas was working at the shoe factory also. By 1930, Catherine, husband Edward Devlin and son were renting half a duplex at 88 Standish Street. Catherine was a stay-at-home mom. By 1940, the family was renting at 57 Houghton Street. She was a Gold Star Mother of World War II. Her son having been killed in the Battle of the Bulge.

A resident of 10 Stearns Street, Catherine died in Saint Vincent's Hospital on a Wednesday. She was 88. Born in Woburn, Catherine lived in Worcester for 85 years. She was survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Edward in 1961. Catherine's funeral was held on a Saturday from the James E. Fay funeral home, 9 Hammond Street, followd by mass at Our Lady of the Angels, 1221 Main Street.

Arthur was the seventh of eight children born to Joseph Green and Margaret Leonard and the fifth son. He grew up on Grafton Street in Worcester. Arthur completed one-year of high school and in 1910, at age 16, he was an apprentice in the leather tannery where his father worked. In 1917, when Arthur registered for the WWI draft he was working as a brakeman for the Boston & Albany Railroad. Arthur was 23, single, had no dependents and claimed no exemption from the draft. He was described as being of medium height and medium build with blue eyes and brown hair. By 1930, married and with two children Arthur was renting at 51 Stoughton Street in the 4th ward for $42/month. In 1939, he worked for 52-weeks and earned $2,400 in wages. Arthur's wife Marion died in the same year. By 1940, he and the children had moved to 74 Arthur Street which Arthur was renting for $35/month. Arthur worked 48-hours the week-ending 30 March. In 1942, at age 48, he registered for the WWII draft. The family was living at 419 Grafton Street. Arthur was 5ft-7in in height, weighed 185 pounds had blue eyes, gray hair and a light complexion. He worked for the Boston & Albany Railroad for 40-years and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen

A resident of 97 Pasadena Parkway, Arthur, age 66, died in Saint Vincent Hospital on a Thursday. He was survived by two sons, three daughters, three brothers: Edward and Herbert Maguire of Worcester, and Joseph of Lynn; two sisters Mrs Margaret Brigham, and Catherine (Edward A) Devlin both of Worcester, and nine grandchildren. The funeral was held from Athy funeral home, 111 Lancaster Street, with high mass at Saint Joan of Arc church.

Biography* Thomas Francis Green, 1898-1956:
Thomas was the last of eight children born to Joseph Green and Margaret Leonard and the sixth son. In 1918, age 21, Thomas registered for the World War I draft. He was employed by L. F. St. Martin at 12 Houghton Street in Worcester, was of medium height and build, had blue-gray eyes and brown hair. Thomas signed as Thomas F. Green on the 5th of June. By 1920, the family had bought a home on Arthur Street and Thomas, with a high school education, was working as a sole-sorter in a shoe factory. In 1923, Thomas married Winifred Maloney. At that time he was delivering milk. Thomas and Winifred didn't live together immediately after their marriage but by 1930, they and their daughter were renting at 288 Grafton Street for $35/month. Thomas was working as a salesman in a store. In 1939, he worked as a manager in a restaurant for 52-weeks, earned wages of $1,700 and had no other income. In 1940, Thomas was unemployed for 11-weeks by the week-ending 30 March and was seeking work. Shortly thereafter, he began working as a conducter on the Boston & Albany Railroad. In 1942 he registered for the World War II draft at age 45. They still lived at the Grafton Street address. Thomas was 5'-9'' in height, weighed 160 pounds with blue eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion. He signed as Thomas F. Green on April 26th. Thomas was a member of the St. Stephen's Men's Club and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainman.

Thomas suffered a heart attack on a Wednesday while on duty as a conductor as the train pulled into Boston. Thomas, 57, died in the ambulance on the way to Massachusetts General hospital. He was survived by his wife Winifred, one daughter, four brothers Edward, Arthur and Herbert Maguire all three of Worcester, Joseph of Lynn, and two sisters Mrs Margaret Brigham and Mrs Catherine Devlin both of Worcester. The funeral was held on Saturday from Callahan Brothers Funeral Home, 36 Trumbull Street, with high mass at St. Stephen's church.

Frederick, a first generation Canadian-American was the 3rd child of 12 and the eldest son. His father Carris, a blacksmith, was born in Quebec, Canada. Frederick's mother Johanna was a first generation Irish-American born in Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1900 the family rented at 3 Elliot Street in Worcester's 2nd ward. Frederick was employed as a wire worker. In 1910 the family was renting at 9 Glen Street also in the 2nd ward. Frederick was a foreman in the wire mill where his father was a blacksmith. Later that year he married Margaret Green. In 1918, he registered for the World War I draft. Frederick was employed by manufacturer Worcester Wire Die Company at 112 Front Street. He was of medium height and build with blue eyes and black hair. In 1920, with two children, Frederick and Margaret were renting an apartment in his in-law's house at 19 Arthur Street in the 4th ward. He was proprietor of a wire die shop. In 1930 they were paying $35/month rent.

Later a resident of 33 Arthur Street, Worcester, Frederick, 56, died in City Hospital on a Tuesday after a brief illness. He was survived by his wife Margaret, mother Johanna Brigham, one son, one daughter, four brothers George, Leo, Roy and Louis, and four sisters Mrs Minnie Malloy, Gertrude (Michael) Higgins, Irene (James) O'Brien all of Worcester and Vera (Robert) Roddy of Leominster. Frederick's funeral was held from the home on Thursday with a high mass at St. Stephen's church.

Biography* Catherine Reynolds Leonard, 1872-1945:
Not a lot is known about Catherine's family and her early Life. Born in Ireland, she immgrated to the United States circa 1889 as a teenager. Catherine's father Terrence and mother Elizabeth Gilhooly are listed on her 1895 marriage to John Leonard. After marriage she and her own family lived in several different places, all in Worcester. In 1900, the family lived at 6 Fay Street. In 1910, at 378 Grafton Street. In 1920 at 58 Suffolk Street and finally in 1930 at 27½ Providence Street. Catherine bore seven children, five of whom survived her. Her husband John died in 1940. In addition to her roles as wife and mother, she was a member of the Ascension Branch, L. C. B. A.4

Catherine died in Worcester City Hospital on a Thursday at age 73. She was survived by two sons, John J. of New York and Edward F. of Worcester, three daughters Katherine (Gerald) McMurray of New York, Mary (George) Coskey of Holden, and Margaret (Daniel) Shea of Worcester, and two brothers Patrick Gilhooly of New York and Bernard of Ireland. The funeral was held from the Athy Memorial Home on Saturday followed by high mass at Saint John's.
