Biography* Michael F. O'Brien, 1887-1972:
Michael's christening sponsors included a Michael O'Brien - his father?, or the 'other' Michael O'Brien? Born at 836 Brooklyn Street by 1891, the family lived at 2904 12th Street in St Louis 3rd ward. In 1900, Michael was workings as a cash boy for a dry goods. In 1910, still living with his mother, Michael was working at Bucks Stove & Range Company.
NOTE: A Michael O'Brien registered for the WWI draft in 1917 and listed dependents of a wife and child. Don't believe our Michael married Ethel Pickens until 1920 or later. Ethel's marriage to Michael was her second and she had five children from that first marriage. Don't know anything about our Michael having a wife nor child as mentioned in the 1917 registration with an address of 2010 Mallinckrodt, St Louis. This Michael is of short stature and medium build with brown eyes and dark brown hair and works as a steel range worker at the stove company. In 1920, there is a Michael O'Brien, married to Mary, five years younger and born in Austria, living in a quadplex at 1219a Ann Avenue in St. Louis 9th ward. This Michael works as a packer at the U. S. Army quartermaster depot. Is this our Michael?

In 1930, Michael and Ethel are renting as 2565 Benton Street in the 18th ward for $18/month. He is working as a stove assembler. In 1938, when he is listed as the informant on his brother Robert's death cert, Michael is living at 4204 St Louis Avenue. Michael never was in the military and retired as a stove mounter from Union Service.

Michael, age 84, of 1728 Cleveland, Granite City, Madison County, Illinois, died at St. Elizabeth hospital, Granite City, on a Thursday. Cause of death was bilateral lobar pneumonia, and fatty degeneration of liver. An autopsy was performed. Michael was attended by Dr. Felicia D Koch, 1821 Edison Ave, Granite City. His step-daughter Velmas Phillips of 4125 Utah Street was the informant on the death cert. Mercer Mortuary, 1416 Niedringhaus Avenue, Granite City 62040 was in charge of arrangements. Michael was buried with wife Ethel who died in 1948.
