Biography* Eleanor F. Cashman Downes, 1885-1963:
Eleanor came to Sheldon, Iowa circa 1900 from Illinois after the death of her mother. She and Thomas had twelve children.

from Carol Downes McCarty "History of the Downes family": Eleanor’s mother's name was Delia Sullivan and her father was William Cashman. The Sullivan’s came from Illinois to Goodell, Iowa. Delia and William had two daughters, Eleanor, born 1885 and Maude born three years later. Delia was not a well woman and when the girls were 10 and 13 she died of tuberculosis in her early 30’s. Her husband William was a cattle buyer by trade and after a year of trying to keep house he finally gave up and brought the girls to Sheldon to live with two aunts and uncles. Eleanor lived with her mother's brother and his wife who ran the hotel in Matlock, Iowa, just Northwest of Sheldon and Maude lived with Eleanor and Pete Baadte, her mother's sister and her husband who farmed Northwest of Sheldon. William then left for Spokane, Washington and lived the rest of his life on a ranch. He married the woman who owned the ranch. He died of cancer and is buried in the cemetery in Spokane.

Eleanor had a difficult time after the death of her husband in 1936 as the country was just coming out of a great depression. She worked at any job she could find usually taking care of children or helping young mothers. The last nine years of her life she lived with her daughter Carol where once again she was on a farm and she loved it. Eleanor and Thomas had 12 children. Four of the children died as babies from a few months to three years old. Three are burried in Worthington, Minnesota at the Catholic Cemetery across the road from where they farmed, Bessie Mae, Lanetta, and William. Mary Ann is buried in Sheldon. Oldest son John bought a marker for the three graves in Worthington and Pat McCarty has a tape of a family visit to the grave site.

Eleanor died on a Thursday of pneumonia at age 77. She was survived by six daughters and two sons. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband and four children.

Biography* Catherine Conerty McCabe, ca1813-????:
We don't know when Catherine immigrated to the U.S.A. We also do not know when nor where she married Patrick McCabe. Further, we have assumed that Mary McCabe, born 1830 in Troy, Rennselaer County, New York was Catherine's first child. But there are a two disturbing facts surrounding this assumption. One, Mary Mccabe was born when Patrick and Catherine were still teenagers, both about seventeen. And two, there is a 10-year-gap until their next child.

Catherine may have had a brother Matthew Conerty who also immigrated. If they're not siblings, it's likely that Catherine and Matthew were closely related. We believe this because:
1) They are close in age;
2) They both lived in Troy, New York in the mid-1830's;
3) They both lived in Hartland Township, McHenry County, Illinois in the 1840's & 50's and;
4) Two (and possibly) three of Matthew's sons lived in Fillmore County, Minnesota in the 1860's, 70's & 80's.

After Patrick died in 1865 Catherine continued to live in Fountain Township until at least mid-1875. No evidence of what happened to her after that.
