Her mother born in Wisconsin, was a first generation Bavarian-American. According to family lore, daughter Josephine was born out of wedlock and although the child was adopted by Con Manley, he is not believed to have been her biological father. Melia married for a second time after Con died in 1933. This marriage is not recorded in Dane County. This second husband, "Jack", allegedly squandered the money Melia received from the sale of the farm. At a later date, Melia was seen waiting tables in a restaurant somewhere in the Dells resort area. |

Although we have no direct evidence of Margaret's birthplace, she was living on her father's farm at age 3-months and with a small leap of faith we've presumed that this was her birthplace. By 1900, she was living with her parents in Luverne and was employed as a school teacher. By 1920, she was no longer teaching bu was still living with her parents. Margaret was married late in life to Jake Crowley of Chatfield. Both she and her husband died of cancer. After her husband died, she ran their Chatfield farm on a fifty-fifty basis. Margaret, 68, died on a Tuesday.4 |
