| Biography* | Margaret Noonan Brennan, 1844-1915: Born in Ireland, Margaret immigrated to the United States between 1862 and 1865. She and her husband lived for many years in Rock County, Minnesota before moving to Oakes, North Dakota circa 1912 to make their home near members of their family, nearly all of them having moved there. Margaret, who had been ill about a week, died on a Tuesday at the home of her son Dan J. Brennan near Oakes, North Dakota. She was survived by six of her nine children. Mr. and Mrs. Martin Williams and Mrs. Daniel Noonan traveled from Luverne on Wednesday via Sioux Falls to Oakes for the funeral. The funeral was held on Saturday from the Catholic church in Oakes, Rev. Father Baker having charge of the services. [Excerpted from The Brennans of Chatfield by William Gallagher.] 4 |

| Biography* | Margaret Noonan, c1807-1892: In February 1868, the widow Margaret sold her 160 acres in Section 18 of Carrolton Township to her son William and her forty and one-half acres in Section 7 to her sons Thomas and James. At a fair and festival held by the Fountain Catholic Church on 21-23 January 1873, Margaret was chosen "Most Popular Old Lady" by a majority of twenty-one votes over her nearest rival, Mrs. Mulroy of Fountain. Final tally: 180 to 159. Between three and four hundred people attended the three-day, alcohol-free event, which grossed six hundred dollars. Margaret remained in Fillmore County and lived out her days with her various children. She died on 20 April 1892, at the age of eighty-five, in the home of her daughter, Mary Ryan Brennan, and was buried in the Carrolton Cemetery. Women were not honored equally with men in Margaret's time. They essentially gave up their identity when they married. They couldn't vote. They acquired citizenship automatically when their husbands were naturalized, so few were naturalized on their own. They were less likely to have an obituary published to mark their passing and, indeed, were often not memorialized in stone. Or worse, were memorialized trivially as, for example, "Mrs John Doe." In Margaret's case, however, she got the last laugh. While she and her husband William are both honored by all who are descended of them, William's only personal memorial is the large tombstone anchored firmly to the ground in the Catholic Cemetery in Carrolton Township. Margaret, on the other hand, is memorialized in a much more personal, portable and reproducible way - a photograph survives her! |

| Biography* | Peter O'Hara, 1825-1889: We don't know when Peter came to the United States but some of his children by his first wife, Bridget Trainor, that were born in Ireland, were in the U.S. by the 1860s. In 1870, Peter was living in Preston Village, Fillmore county, Minnesota. By 1880, he had moved to Lanesboro. Peter signed a will on 10 Mar 1887, listing his second wife Elizabeth and grandson Peter O'Hara Jr. as heirs. Thomas Scanlan, of Carrolton, was named executor and the signing was witnessed by W. B. Anderson and Robt Donald. A codicil to the will was signed on 16 Apr 1889, adding son Owen (Peter Jr.'s father) and daughter Mary Toomey as heirs. This signing was witnessed by M. Scanlon and O. G. Wall, both of Lanesboro. Peter died on a Monday at about age 64. His will was approved for probate on 10 september 1889. We're not sure of his exact death date. His tombstone lists 26 June 1889. Probate records list 24 June 1889. Note: Another grandson Edwin V. O'Hara (1881-1956) - brother to the Peter O'Hara Jr listed as an heir - became a Bishop in the Catholic Church. |
