Biography* John Edward Mulvihill, 1858-1929:
A first generation Irish-American, John was probably born on the family farm in Carrolton township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. He grew up there and left the home farm by 1885. He purchased land in Farmington township of Lake County, South Dakota from the General Land Office. John was issued patents on two 160-acre parcels there; one parcel in section 8 in 1888, the other in section 7 in 1890. He continued to acquire land and eventually owned a total of 560-acres. In 1900, the farm was free of mortgage. However, in 1910, there was a mortgage on the farm.
John also owned a ranch in Texas (believed to have been rented by his brother-in-law Richard Ryan) and was a stockholder in the Farmers Elevator at Ramona and in the Morley twine plant in Sioux City, IA. He raised Perceron horses and at one time had 25 of them. John also raised Shorthorn cattle. At one time he owned an Apperson automobile. John and Margaret lived on the family farm until 1920, when they moved to a a smaller farm just west of Madison. His wife died in 1922.

John, age 70, died suddenly on a Tuesday at Madison hospital following a surgical operation. He was survived by three sons, one daughter, and two sisters. Funeral arrangements were indefinite due to weather but it will probably at Ramona on Friday. Holman & Kundert Funeral Home was in charge.

Born and raised on a homestead farm in Farmington township, Lake county, South Dakota, John took over the farm when his parents moved to a farm closer to Madison in 1920. The family remained on the farm until the drought and dust storms during 1934. They lost the farm and moved to a smaller farm, south and east of the homestead. John liked to dance, play cards, and fish. He also was fond of whistling. A very handy man, he made rocking horses, tables and chairs for all of his grandchildren. In later years, he enjoyed playing cards at O'Hara's pool hall. Later he moved into Madison.

John J Mulvihill, age 69, died on a Monday at Madison Community hospital following a lingering illness. Biography* Agnes Murphy Brennan, 1891-1973:
The oldest of six children, Agnes was born in Wisconsin to a farmer father born in Pennsylvania and a mother born in Wisconsin. However, there are some inconsistencies in the record on the birthplaces of her ancestors. Her father, a first-generation Irish-American, may have been born in Maryland. Her mother was a first-generation German-American but Agnes' maternal grandmother may have been born in Switzerland. In 1900, the family was living in Luverne township, Rock County, Minnesota. By 1910, in Springwater township in the same county. And by 1920, she and her husband were living in Riverdale township, Dickey County, North Dakota.

There are discrepancies in our sources on both Agnes birth place and her death place 'though the birth dates and death dates are consistent. Did not find Agnes listed in either the California death index nor the Social Security Death Index.

Biography* Mary Nolan McCarhy, 1834-1898:
Mary's death notice in the Hudson newspaper lists her as the widow of the late Patrick McCarthy. That may be - but - it might not be our Patrick McCarthy. According to the Hudson Cemetery records and based on her death date, Mary is buried with an unrelated McCarthy family in section D/lot 65. There is no additional information in the cemetery record that sheds any light on this anomaly.

There is almost nine years difference between the year of the christening record for Bridget and her brithyear as consistently reported during her years in the United States. A yet to de resolved discrepancy. In any event, John Dawson and Margaret Croneen were the christening sponsors in the record that we have.

The civil marriage record for her 1875 marriage to Martin Williams is except for the license. In the 1910 census, her immigration year was reported as 1868.

LAST SUMMONS FOR MRS. M. WILLIAMS
Pioneer Mother, Laid at Rest Monday, Had Resided in Rock County Since 1875; in City 40 years.

Mrs. Martin Willims, one of Rock County's pioneer mothers, and a resident of this city for forty years was summoned by death Friday morning at 6:00 at her home on North Cedar Street. Her health had been steadily failing during the past year owing to infirmities ofadvanced age.

Funeral services were hled Monday morning at 10:00 at St. Catherine's church and the remains were laid to rest in St. Catherine's cemetery. Solemn requiem high mass was conducted by Rev. Fr. P. E. Matthews assistedby Rev. Fr. Richard Barden of Ellsworth and Rev. Fr. A. M. Gmeinder of Adrian. James McKeon, Charles Merrill, C.W. McDonald ,P. J. Connell, Rudolph Hassler, and Frank F. Michael were pallbearers.

Born February 1, 1852 in Limerick County,Ireland, Bridget Noonan spent the first twenty one years of her life in that country, coming to this country in 1872. She was united in marriage to Mr. Martin Williams on Mary 17, 1975, at Chatfield, this state.

In the year preceding their marriage, Mr. Williams had come to Rock County to take up a homestead on the northwest quarter of section 18, in Springwater township. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Williams took up their home on that tract, operating it continuously until 1895. Then they retired from active farming and established their residence in Luverne.

Seven children were born to this union, and three survive. Those surviving are Mrs. J. F. Crowley of Chatfield; Harry J. of Adrian; and Dr. Charles A. of Pipestone. Mr. Williams died on October 21st, 1931.

Mrs. Williams death severs another link in the chain of early-day residents who played an important part in the development of this section. Together, with her husband, she courageously endured the hardships common to homestead days, wielding a helpful, inspiring influence over all with whom she came in contact.

Beloved by her children and friends alike, Mrs.Williams was accorded widespread esteem, to which she was fully entitled, and her life was constantly marked by the finest and most exemplary attributes of womanhood.

All the children were present at the funeral and among other relatives and friends from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Culver and daughter, Jean, of Detroit Lakes, Mr.and Mrs. H. Rice of Flandreau, Mr. & Mrs. C. Scott of Iona, and Mr. & Mrs. D. McCarthy and son Waldo, and Mr.and Mrs. D. McLean of Sioux Falls. She immigrated in 1872.

Biography* Daniel Noonan, 1852-1909:
Daniel's birth date listed in the 1900 census, March 1851, seems unlikely based upon his 27 June 1852 christening. In those days, Irish catholic parents would have had the child christened within a day or two of birth. If the recorded date of christening is correct it is almost certain that Daniel was born in June 1852. Daniel's christening sponsors were Thad Fitzgerald and Johanna Cronin.

He showed up in Minneapolis, MN, about 1880. Married Nettie Johnson about 1880. 1895 MN state census and 1900 US census show them with all five of their children born in Minneapolis. In 1900, they lived at 2226 19th Ave South, Minneapolis 11th ward in a house they owned with mortgage. Daniel Noonan, worked on the railroad while in Minneapolis. In 1909 Daniel was killed in an accident working as a fireman in Tacoma, Washington. His son John was also killed while working as a fireman in Minneapolis in 1903.

The following was transcribed from The Tacoma Daily News, 30 January 1909:

FIREMAN NOONAN KILLED

Fatal Collision Between HoseTruck No. 2 and Spanaway Car

Failing to heed the gong of the hose cart driven by J. W. Taylor, 2536 South E street, in-bound Spanaway car, No 146, operated by Motorman Thorne Dahl and Conductor W. H. Ittman, crashed into the cart at South Twenty-third street and Pacific avenue at 6 o'clock this evening. The heavy cart was overturned and Daniel Noonan, 4820 S. Washington street, was fatally hurt.

Taylor was thrown from the wagon and was severely injured about the neck. Captain E. N. Whitaker received painful injuries about the side and back. W.T. Wing, hoseman, was thrown under the hose cart on the pavement and escaped with a few bruises.

Noonan's head was caught between the curb and the overturned wagon. His skull was fractured. He was hastened to Fannie Paddock hospital and died early this morning without regaining consciousness. Taylor was also taken to the hospital, but was later removed to his home as was Captain Whitaker.

"We were all at the top of the Twenty-third street hill and started down when we saw the Spanaway car stop at Twenty-fourth street. I kept ringing my gong, but the motorman did not pay any attention to it. I believed he had stopped and was waiting for us to pass, and continued down the hill on a run", said Driver Taylor this morning.

Signboards Obstructed View.

"We could only see the Pacific avenue tracks at Twenty-third street after we started down the hiss because of the large signboards. When we reached the car shot out in front of us. We were going too fast to stop and could not make a short turn because we would have overturned and rolled under the cart. I took the only chance and made a wide swing to the north so as to pass in front of the car, thus giving the motorman time to use his emergency brake. I thought we had made it, when the tender hit the hind wheel of the wagon and we were overturned.

The car was going at a good speed or we would not have overturned the wagon, which contained 1,200 feet of hose beside four men. I was thrown off the seat, as was Captain Whitaker, who was riding with me. Hoseman Wing was riding on top of the hose when the wagon overturned the hose fell out and pinned him to the pavement. Part of the wagon was lying on the sidewalk and Noonan was caught between the wagon and the curb.

This is the second or third time the street cars have paid no attention to us and we have had several bumps before, but this is the first time anybody was hurt," concluded Driver Taylor.

Noonan, who was a relief man, was standing on the rear steps of the wagon

Met Son's Fate.

John Noonan, son of Daniel, was killed while a member of a fire department in Minneapolis, Minn., seven years ago, being rundown by a heavy fire engine and almost instantly killed before his father's eyes. Both father and son Noonan were in the Minneapolis department. Noonan came to Tacoma after his son's death, having served ten years as a fireman in that city. Daniel Noonan is survived by his wife, three married daughters who live in Minneapolis and a 17-year-old son, Daniel, Jr., in.
