| Biography* | Patrick "Patsy" McCarty, 1879-1896: Patrick died intestate, i.e. without a will. Probate was necessary because he and brother Thomas held a mortagage and because Patrick was owner of record of the North East Quarter (of the North East Quarter of Section 27) of the family farm. How he came by this property is unknown. Since he had no wife or issue, according to Wisconsin law, his mother Ellen was his sole heir. On 3 March 1897, his mother Ellen petitioned the court to appoint her son Thomas, and Patrick's brother, as Administrator of Patrick's estate. At the time of the petition the value of Patrick's personal estate was estimated at $1,100, the value of his real estate at $1,600, and the amount of his indebtedness at $150. After Thomas was appointed administrator, a detailed inventory was made by him of Patrick's estate. This inventory was then appraised by Isaac F. Bradley and A. E. Buell as follows: 40 acres in Section 27 of Sun Prairie Township - $840.00 Half interest in a $1650 mortgage, dated 25 Apr 1894, due five (5) years from date, given by Margaret McElroy to Patrick and Thomas McCarthy with interest at 6%. (one years interest paid & 2 years interest plus $200 principal since his death paid.) - $725.00 A half interest in all the following described property: 10 Cows at $25 each - $125.00 1 Steer - $5.00 3 Calves at $10 each - $15.00 1 Horse named Prince - $7.50 1 Horse named Tiye - $10.00 1 Horse named Jessie - $22.00 1 Horse named Flora - $20.00 7 Hogs @ $3.25 each - $2.75 6 Shoats @ $3 each - $18.00 1 Wagon, 2 horse - $7.50 1 Sleigh, double - $3.50 1 Buggy, single, w/top - $4.00 1 Cutter, le - $5.00 1 Binder, McCormick - $6.00 1 Mower - $2.50 1 horse rake - $1.25 1 Disk harrow - $5.00 1 steel beam Plows - $1.50 1 wood beam Plows - $1.50 1 sulky Cultivator - $1.50 1 walking Cultivator - $0.75 1 bruching dbl harness - $5.00 1 back pad dbl harness - $2.50 1 driving dbl harness - $5.00 1 Single Harness - $1.00 1 Seeder - $2.50 1 Harrow - $1.00 300 bu Oats @ 15 cents per bushel - $45.00 175 bu Barley @ 20 cents per bushell - $35.00 Half of money received on McElroy mortgage - $199.00 money in Farmers & Merchants Bank, Sun Prairie - $500.00 money in Farmers & Merchants Bank, Sun Prairie - $100.00 TOTAL - $2746.75 The final judgement was issued on 12 February 1898 by Judge J. H. Carpeulet. Excerpts from the judgement follow: ... and no claims having been presented against the estate of said deceased ... it is ... decreed that said final account is approved and allowed. That the estate of the said Patrick McCarthy, deceased, is fully and finally settled, pursuant to law ... and that there is now in the hands of said administrator belonging to said estate, the sum of Seven Hundred Sixty Seven & 75/100 Dollars ($767.75) in money, and the other personal property mentioned and described in the general inventory of said administrator, to wit: The undivided one-half part of a certain promissory note and mortgage given by Margaret McElroy to Thomas and Patrick McCarthy for sixteen-hundred fifty ($1650) Dollars dated 25 April 1894, due five (5) years after date for value received with six (6) percent interest, payable annually, upon which there is yet unpaid the sum of fourteen hundred fifty ($1450) dollars with interest from 25 April 1897; and the undivided one-half part of all the stock, farming utensils and other personal property mentioned and described in said inventory except the three hundred (300) bushells of oats, and the one hundred seventy-five (175) bushells of barley, and the money in the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Sun Prairie, all of which belongs to the estate of said deceased, and that there is real estate left by said deceased in Dane County, Wisconsin, described as follows, to wit: The North East Quarter of the North East Quarter of Section 27, in Town 8 North, of Range 11 East. And it now appearing to the court that the said Patrick McCarthy deceased died intestate leaving no widow and no issue and no father him surviving, ... it is furthur ... decreed that all of said real estate and personal property and money of said deceased, and all the real and personal property of the estate of the said deceased wherever situated ... is assigned and distributed to Ellen McCarthy, the mother of said deceased as his sole heir at law, and that said administrator immediately pay, turn over and deliver the same to her, and that he take her receipt therefor and file the same in this court and that upon the filing of such receipt said administrator be discharged from his said trust and that the sureties upon his bond as such administrator be released and discharged. |

| Biography* | Patrick McCarthy, 1833-1883: Patrick was born in Ireland, probably in Kilmichael Parish, County Cork. He immigrated to the Town of Claverack in Columbia County, New York circa 1850 with his mother and several siblings, two years after his older brother John. An illiterate laborer, Patrick applied for United States citizenship. He was living in Hudson when he was granted Final Papers by the Justices Court there on 20 October 1857. He worked on the railroad as a flagman for a time. He was married twice. At the time of his first marriage, Patrick was living in Hudson's 4th ward. Later, he lived in the Town of Greenport and finally at 3 Robinson Street in Hudson's 2nd ward. About 9 o'clock in the morning on Tuesday the 18th of September 1883, Patrick was unloading a canal boat of coal. The boat was moored at the Albany and Rensselaer Iron and Steel Company's dock in Hudson. He was severely injured by a large lump of coal which fell about ten feet striking him on the head. Patrick walked to the office of Dr. H. Lyle Smith, who examined the wound. The skull was not fractured although the wound was a serious one. The wound was on the left side of the head, well back and above the ear. Dr. Smith dressed the wound and sent Patrick home in his private carriage. Later, the doctor visited him and found it necessary, in order to give him relief, to trepan him. The doctor found beneath the skull a clot of blood, caused by the rupture of a blood vessel. The unfortunate Patrick expired about eleven o'clock that night. The funeral was conducted on Friday from his late residence and then from Saint Mary's with a High Mass. He is buried with his first wife and two of his children. Patrick's tombstone in the Hudson cemetery lists his birth and death years as 1841 and 1886 respectively. The tombstone appears to be relatively new - it must have been installed many years after Patrick's death. It's not known who bought the stone nor where they got the dates. |

| Biography* | John McCarty, c1816-1891: John McCarty came to the United States in 1847 and by 1848 was living in Claverack Township, Columbia County, New York. On 29 September 1852, he declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States at Justices Court in Hudson, New York and was granted citizenship in the same court on 21 October 1854. Circa 1865, John purchased a forty-acre farm in Sun Prairie Township, Dane County, Wisconsin from James McIlwain (South East Quarter of the North East Quarter of Section 20 in Town 8 North and Range 11 East of the 5th Prime Meridian). Twenty years later, circa 1885, John sold this forty-acre farm in Section 20 to Brucsa Sabore and bought a one-hundred-twenty-acre farm in Section 27 of Sun Prairie Township from A. E. Buell. This farm consisted of the South Half (eighty acres) and the North East Quarter (forty acres) of the North East Quarter of Section 27. About a year later, his son Thomas took over the North East Quarter. A year after that, they made an adjustment whereby John took the Eastern half and Thomas took the South West Quarter. Both of these farms were still in operation in Aug 1989. John died at his home on a Thursday. The funeral was held on Sunday at Sacred Hearts Church in Sun Prairie with the Rev. A. J. Kuehne officiating. He was buried in the church cemetery. In 1990, the farm in Section 20, where John lived for twenty years and his children grew up, is owned by Donald Pederson. It is located at 5441 Highway N, about a half mile north of the junction with Highway T. The original house of four rooms, two up and two down, is still in use although there have been additions made. John and Ellen raised six children in a four room house! The McCarthy's were principally dairy farmers. They raised a breed called Milking Shorthorns for both milk and beef. They grew small grain for feed though some of the excess barley was sold to breweries. They shifted to more corn in the nineteen-thirties after hybrids were developed. They also raised swine for consumption and sale. |

On 8 October 1903, Rose, a 38-year-old resident of Egan, South Dakota, made homestead application number 3634 for the 160 acres of the northwest quarter of section 29 in township-105-north of range-78-west in Lyman County (P.O. Vivian), South Dakota. The property was described as "quite level prarie; grazing land". She built a house on the land in April 1904 and established residence on the 10th of June of that year. Rose harvested ten-tons of hay in the 1905 season; cultivated five-acres to crop and harvested another fifty-tons of hay in the 1906 season; and planted six-acres to crop in the 1907 season. Vivian neighbor's John Morrissey, Roney P. Acker, Joseph Acker, and Joseph Morrissey all provided affidavits attesting to Rose's improvements. Rose's application was approved on 23 June 1909 and Patent 72221 was granted on 15 July 1909. By 1910, Rose owned and lived in a mortgaged house on Pipestone Avenue in Flandreau, South Dakota. She and John McCarthy continued to live in that house after their marriage. Rose died on a Monday in the Flandreau Municipal Hospital after a ten-day stay. She was survived by her husband, two step-children, two sisters, and two brothers. Her funeral was held on Friday at Saints Simon & Jude with the Rev's.
