Biography* Owen McCabe, ca1824-1900:
Owen's tombstone lists his birthyear as 1825 but he was probably born a year-or-two earlier. According to his declaration of intent to naturalize (intent to become a citizen of the United States), Owen sailed from Liverpool on 20 May 1850, arriving at the Port of New York on 24 Jun 1850. He first appears as a farmer - and naturalized U. S. citizen - in Fountain township, Fillmore County, Minnesota in 1857. Owen filed a will in McHenry County, Illinois on 10 April 1858. In it, he bequeaths 160 acres (legal description - location - not provided) to sister Bridget McCabe of Chatfield, Fillmore County, Minnesota. In 1875, Owen is living with his widowed sister-in-law, Catherine Conerty McCabe.

Biography* Patrick McCabe, ca1813-1865:
Born in Ireland, Patrick first appeared in the United States in 1836 residing at 35 Elbow Street in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. By September of 1839, Patrick, who was literate, was living in McHenry County, Illinois, where on two occasions during that month he purchased McHenry County land from the United States General Land Office in Chicago. These two purchases totaled one-hundred-sixty acres consisting of eighty acres each in Sections Fourteen (14) and Fifteen (15) all in Hartland Township. Patrick paid $1.25 per acre for this land, a total of two-hundred-dollars ($200.00). In early 1844, he bought forty more acres in Section Thirteen (13) from the government and that fall, sold the eighty in Section Fifteen (15) to his brother-in-law Matthew Conerty. In early 1845 he bought another twenty acres in Section 16 from the government.

He continued to farm the remaining one-hundred-forty acres, until 1855. In March of that year, he sold the forty-acre parcel. In March of the following year, 1856, he sold the last one-hundred-acres and moved to Fillmore County, Minnesota. During the fifteen (15) plus years that Patrick lived in McHenry County he bought and sold a total of two-hundred-twenty-acres. After deducting his initial outlay of three-hundred-sixty-dollars ($360.00) plus various notes and mortgages, Patrick cleared a profit of more than two-thousand-six-hundred-dollars ($2,639.28 to be precise). Pretty good return on investment!

Patrick wasn't as fortunate in Minnesota. Upon arrival, he acquired one-hundred-sixty-acres in Section Fifteen (15) of Fountain Township and another one-hundred-sixty-acres in Section Fourteen (14). On 22 April 1865, Patrick was stricken with lung fever. He was visited several times by Doctor Redmond but died five days later on the 27th. He was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Carrolton Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota.

Patrick died intestate and heavily in debt. His estate was appraised at three-thousand-seven-hundred-forty-three-dollars ($3743.00) including land, livestock, farm implements and stored grain. He owed in excess of eight-hundred-eighty-dollars ($880.00) including mortgages, real-estate taxes and bills from various creditors. Eventually, half of his 320 acres were sold to pay those debts. Son Mathew McCabe, co-exectutor with Catherine McCabe, Patrick's wife and Mathew's mother, did not discharge his duties in anything like a timely manner. The case dragged on for years and was finally settled in August 1874.

Biography* Catherine McCarthy Brown, 1830-1873:
Catherine, age 25, was the sixth oldest of the seven children living with their mother, the matriarch Margaret McCarthy, in the 1855 census of the Town of Claverack in Columbia County, New York. And although other evidence suggests that Catherine was more probably born circa 1827, a birth year of 1830 has been recorded here to preserve the order of birth in the 1855 census. Catherine came to Claverack circa 1850 with her mother and five of her six siblings. Her older brother John had come two years earlier. After her marriage in 1859, Catherine and her husband were living in Hudson's 4th ward and later in Hudson's 2nd ward.

Catherine's tombstone records her death date as 28 August. Another source lists her death date as 30 August.

Biography* Daniel W. McCarthy, 1860-1924:
Most records which identify Daniel's birthplace list it as Hudson in Columbia County, New York. However, on 1 June 1860, the family was living in Claverack Township of that county not in Hudson. Claverack Township is the more likely place of birth. At about four years of age, Daniel moved, with his parents, to Sun Prairie Township, Dane County, Wisconsin. Little is known about Dan's early years. He anecdotally told his sons, that he "grew up on a dirt farm in upstate New York." Since the family moved to Wisconsin when Dan was four-or-five-years-old, it's hard to believe that he had many vivid memories of that environment.

Dan was resentful of a younger sibling who had discovered a way to get of work. As Dan told it, he had a brother, "George"9, who professed to have aspirations for the priesthood. This possibility made a great impression on the mother, Ellen Galvin. She, therefore, allowed "George" to spend hot summer days inside reading the bible instead of outside working in the fields.

No records have been found of Dan between 1870, when he was still with his parents in Sun Prairie at age ten, and 1893 when he bought land in Moody County, South Dakota. We do know that by 1880, when he was twenty, he had left the home farm. In January 1893, Dan paid Maurice W. Keating and his wife Mary E. Keating the sum of $1800 for 160 acres in Section 33 of Fremont Township, Moody County, South Dakota. When Dan's brother Patrick's estate was being settled in 1896, Dane County, Wisconsin court records listed Dan's residence as Ashton, Lyon County, Iowa. The only Ashton in northwestern Iowa in September 1989 was in Osceola County not Lyon County. By 1900, he was in Rock Rapids, Lyon County, Iowa. Dan was living with twenty-six other people at a boarding house on 6th Street. At the time, Dan was a saloon keeper and had a partner named, T. J. Combes10. At the time of his 1900 marriage, Dan's occupation was listed as grocer.

In January 1901, Dan paid $1200 to Jay, Louis and Henrietta Kaplan, and assumed a mortgage of $500, for a lot & house in Rock Rapids on Tama Street between 4th & 5th (Lot 3, Block 32 of Smith's Addition to Rock Rapids, Rock Township, Lyon County, Iowa.) In August 1902, he paid $400 to F. R. and Anna Manning for the lot next to, south of, the house. (Lot 4, Block 32 of Smith's Addition to Rock Rapids, Rock Township, Lyon County, Iowa).

In June 1901, Dan paid $14,400, and assumed mortgages of $2200 and $3000, to M. N. and Katie Hull for 160 acres in Section 19 of Midland Township, Lyon County, Iowa plus another 160 acres in Section 20. In February 1904, Dan and his wife Kittie sold the Moody County farm to John E. Haley for $4700. Mr. Haley also agreed to assume a mortgage of $500 on the property held by J. W. Henderson. In July 1906, he paid $16,900, and assumed a mortgage of $9600, to A. M. and Ida Vail for 160 acres in Section 19 of Midland Township plus 100 acres in Section 30. In December 1909, Dan paid $11,680 to George, Lydia and Martin Guyan for 160 acres in Section 14 of Allison Township, Lyon County, Iowa. In December 1912 he sold this farm to William and John Kitchenmaster for $18,400 and retired a mortgage of $5000.

Dan and Kittie decided that there were better educational opportunities for their three sons in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. So, in January 1914, they sold the two lots and the house to Peter Hickman for $4,200. They agreed to leave the range in the house with possession to be given on 1 Feb 1914. They then moved the family to Sioux Falls where they lived at 820 West 9th. Dan grossed $9320 on the house, extra lot and farm that he bought and sold during the period between 1901 and 1914. This amount does not include disposition of the mortgages involved. In May 1914, Dan bought the property at 109 South Walts Avenue, Sioux Falls, South Dakota from Christina & Andrew Kuehn in Kittie's name. The legal description of this property was Lot 4, Block 33 in Pettigrew's Addition to Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. In November 1911, this lot had no buildings on it. In May 1916 it had a two-story building. Not sure if Dan built the house or if it was on the property when he bought it. The lot and house were transferred to the three sons on 23 July 1942. The sons sold this property to Arthur and Margaret Hough on 21 Jun 1956 for $13,000. In February 1920, all of the farmland that Dan still owned in Lyon County, Iowa, i.e., three quarter sections plus the 100 acre piece, 580 acres in all, were transferred to his wife, Kittie.

On Sunday, 23 Mar 1924, Dan, who had been ill for six months, died at home of general asthenia, weakness due to long illness, hardening of the arteries, and a nervous breakdown. In addition to his widow and three sons, he was survived by one sister and two brothers. At the time of his death, Dan was a member of the local Elks Lodge. He owned no real property and did not leave a will. His funeral was held on Wednesday at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Sioux Falls. Pallbearers were J. C. Hagan, Thomas Kennedy, P. L. Trainor, Louis Spracher, J. O. Featherstone and Edw. Barron of Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Biography* Eugene McCarthy, 1861-1880:
Probably named for his father's brother Eugene who had died four-and-a-half months earlier.

Eugene's brother Daniel claimed that he, Daniel, had a younger sibling "George" who had discovered a way to get of work. As Daniel told the story, brother "George" professed to have aspirations for the priesthood and that this possibility made a great impression on their mother. She, therefore, allowed "George" to spend hot summer days inside reading the bible instead of outside working in the fields with the rest of the children. Daniel further alleged that "George" turned out to be the black sheep of the family. He eventually ran away and was never heard from again.

Daniel did not have a brother "George." The given name Eugene - or Gene - may have gotten changed in the retelling of the story. By the time of Eugene's death, Daniel had already left the Wisconsin nest and was living out of the state. The part of the story about "George" being a black sheep and running away may have been a fabricated embellishment.

One of Margaret's christening sponsors was Catherine Horan - her mother? After her husband died, Margaret lived with her brother Daniel at 201 Warren Street. By 1905, she was no longer living in Hudson. On 07 August 1922, Margaret was living at 134 East 47th Street in New York City when she applied for a passport. She was working as a ladies maid and was planning to accompany Mrs Rita Lydig on a 6-months trip to the British Isles, France, Italy, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. They were scheduled to leave the port of New York aboard the White Star Line on 19 August 1922. Margaret moved to Corona on Long Island circa 1927. Margaret and her sister Mary, who lived with her in Corona, had decided to return to their native Hudson. Their plans were nearly complete when Margaret contracted pneumonia.

She died about two weeks later on a Friday. Margaret was survived by one sister and three nieces.
