Biography* Catherine "Katie" McCabe Delaney, ca1840-1927:
Although there is no direct evidence of her birthdate and place, Katie was probably born in either 1839 or 1840 on the family farm in Hartland township, McHenry County, Illinois. One of the witnesses at her 1866 marriage is listed as Patrick Anerty. Could this be her first cousin Patrick Conerty? We have assumed that it was. The other witness was Elisabeth O'Brien. After her marriage to Thomas Delaney, she lived for many years in Carimona township, Fillmore County, Minnesota.

Katie died on a Friday at the home of her daughter Mary Stanton in Preston, Minnesota. According to her obituary, she was nearly 92-years-of-age which would put her birth year as the second half of 1835 - four-or-five years earlier than likely. Katie was survived by one daughter and one son. She was predeceased by her husband, one son and one daughter. Father Doyle officiated at her funeral which was held at St Liguori's.

Biography* Elizabeth McCabe O'Hara, ca1848-1932:
As with most of the children of Patrick McCabe and Catherine Conerty, we do not have an accurate record of Elizabeth's birth date. The birth date calculated from her death cert which lists her age at death as 74y06m03d would be 08 June 1858. And although the month and day may be accurate she was at least ten years older than 74. Born on the family farm in Hartland township, Elizabeth moved with her family to Fountain township, Fillmore County, Minnesota at an early age. In 1870, she was living with James and Laurie Thrasher in Chatfield township of Fillmore County and was employed as a weaver. In 1875, Elizabeth was living with her widowed mother. In 1882, at age 34-or-35, she married widower Peter O'Hara before witnesses M. Scanlon and Mary E. Enright (her 20-year-old niece?). After her marriage she lived in Lanesboro, Fillmore County. By 1920, she had moved to Fountain Village and was living with her sister Anna Madden.

Biography* Ellen McCabe Laivell, 1852-1937:
As with most of Patrick McCabe and Catherine Conerty's children, there is conflicting evidence of Ellen's birthdate. Even her death cert is inconsistent. In that document her birthdate is listed as 24 June 1855. In the same document it is calculated as 02 July 1855 from her age at death - 81y10m06d. And the birth date on her tombstone agrees with neither of those - 14 July 1856. We're pretty sure that she was born in 1852 and we have taken the birth day and birth month from her tombstone. Ellen was christened by the Rev. H. T. Brady. Her sponsors were her father's brother, Owen McCabe, and Catherine Keen. Born on the family farm in Hartland township, McHenry County, Illinois, Ellen moved, with her parents and siblings, to Fountain township, Fillmore County, Minnesota as a child. It was here she grew up and after her 1876 marriage she lived in Fountain township until 1887 when the family moved into Chatfield City of Fillmore County. Ellen and John had five children, one who died in 1899. She was occassionally referred to as Helen or Nellie.

Ellen, who lived with her son Frank, died on a Saturday at age 84. Her funeral was held from Saint Mary's, Chatfield, on Monday and was officiated by the Rev. Wm. F. Coleman. Those attending the funeral from out of town were [her relations noted in brackets]: Mrs Stella Laivell [son William's widow?], William & John Laivell [son William's sons] and Miss Frances Manahan (all of Minneapolis); M/M John Rahilly & daughter Genevieve [wife a Madden niece?] (St.Paul); M/M Matt McCabe [husband a nephew] and M/M John Buren [wife a McCabe niece] (both of Sheldon, IA); Mrs McCarthy [a Ryan niece] (Sioux Falls); M/M Horihan, Mrs Mulvihill, M/M John Enright [husband a nephew], Mrs Nick Connelly, Mrs Ed Connelly (all of Lanesboro); M/M James Mulroy, Mrs Larry Connelly & daughters, Dan Moore & daughters Mayme & Alice, Misses Agnes & Loretta Walsh, James Walsh, M/M Richard Walsh (all of Fountain); John Brogan, Mrs Bessie Gilchrist, Vincent Gilchrist & Leon Gilchrist (all of Rochester); Will Spencer (Willmar, MN); M/M Raymond Gilchrist (Eyota); M/M Fay McCarthy (St.Charles). Biography* Margaret McCabe Ryan, 1845-1906:
The fourth of nine children, Margaret was born while the family was living on a farm in Hartland Township, McHenry County, Illinois. Although there is no direct evidence that this is her place of birth, it is likely that it took place there. In the spring of 1856, the family moved to a farm in Fountain Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. There she would pass her teenage years acquiring the knowledge and skills of a farm wife before her marriage to Thomas Ryan in 1868.

Some time after her father's estate was settled in August 1874, her only living brother, Matthew, moved to Sioux County, Iowa. Margaret, her husband Thomas, and their children followed. On 20 September 1877, Margaret purchased an 80 acre farm in Section 18 of Grant Township in Sioux County, Iowa from Isaac and Hannah Wolf for $600. Twenty-three years and four months later, on 14 January 1901, this farm, plus the adjoining 80 acre farm purchased by son William in 1894, were sold to B. H. Rensink for $6,800.

On 23 March 1901, Margaret purchased half of a 160 acre farm in Section 1 of Jasper Township in Hanson County, South Dakota from Amy and J. Renkin for $1,250. In addition, she assumed responsibilty for $400 of an existing $800 mortgage on the property. On the same date, her son William purchased the other half of the farm and assumed the other half of the mortgage. Margaret, Thomas, and the four children still at home - William, "Nell," Thomas, and "Nonie" - moved onto the farm in the same month.

A year or two after moving to South Dakota, Margaret developed heart disease. Two or three years later, two months after the death of her husband Thomas, Margaret died suddenly, at home, of heart disease and gastric catarrh. Most sources profess that Margaret bore eight children, seven of whom were living at the time of her death. There is evidence Margaret actually bore nine. A child was born in 1874 that lived less than a year. If this child, named Maggie, was really born to Thomas and Margaret, she was their fifth. Margaret was buried in Saint Peter's Cemetery alongside husband, Thomas.

Born in New York, Mary came to McHenry County, Illinois with her parents in 1839 and on to Filllmore County, Minnesota in 1856 where she spent the rest of her life. We have little confidence in Mary's birth year recorded here. The records we have are very inconsistent ranging from 1827-to-1838. We have used the birth year from her death cert in this record but she was probably born four-or-five-years later, in 1834/5. Mary was married to Thomas Enright in 1858 in the Mulholland home. They had 14-children.

Biography* Matthew Patrick McCabe, 1842-1925:
Although his tombstone has a birth year of 1843, believe that Matthew was actually born in 1842. Born in Illinois, he moved to Fillmore County, Minnesota with his parents and siblings in the early 1850s. By 1870, he had amessed real property of $4,900 and personal property of $1,000. Matthew moved to Sioux County, Iowa in 1875 where he homesteaded northeast of Hull, Iowa.

The Great Deyoe Cattle Case

In 1891, Matthew precipitated a legal action against a man named Deyoe charging him with stealing about 100 head of Matthew's cattle. It became a very famous case in Iowa partly because a change of venue forced by the defendant accelerated the cost of the trial to the state to something in excess of $5,000. It is mentioned in a history of Sioux County written by Dykes in 1942 which includes pictures of Matthew, his wife Hannah and their only son Matt, Jr. There also is on file a copy of an article in the Osceola County Tribune dated Friday, 18 March 1892.

In 1900, two Wier boys (his wife's nephews) were living with them. In 1913, Matthew was farming the East Half of the North East Quarter (80-acres) of Section 4 in Sheridan Township. This property was in the McCabe family at least until 1972. By 1978 it was owned by J. J. De Boer.
