| Biography* | Julia Manley Tracy, 1855-1944: A first generation American born to Ireland born parents, Julia's birth date is listed as 10 June 1955 in her christening record at Saint Mary's in Hudson, Columbia County, New York. However, she herself is listed, as one month old, in the 1 June 1855 census of Ghent Township in that county. So, Julia was probably born in May of that year and not in June. She was christened on 24 June 1855 and was sponsored by her uncle John McCarty and her aunt Catherine Galvin. The eldest of the 10 children in the family, she married Patrick Tracy of Center Township, Rock County, Wisconsin in 1878. In 1886, Patrick's brother, Joseph Tracy, married Julia's sister, Mary Manley. After their marriage, Julia and Patrick lived in Center and Janesville townships in Rock County. They had four children there and sometime after 1900 moved to Chicago. Julia, age 90, died of cerebral apoplexy on a Thursday at 734 N. Elmwood Ave, Oak Park where she lived with her daughter Kathryn Boss. She was attended by Dr Harry J. Dooley of 715 Lake Street. |

| Biography* | Michael Manley,5 ca1824-1878: Born circa 1824 in Ireland, Michael arrived on U.S. shores on 31 May 1851 when he stepped off the SS Don at the Port of New York. He was the only passenger with the surname Manley on board. Michael became a resident of Ghent Township in Columbia County, New York and applied for citizenship. This was granted in Supreme Court of the State of New York at Columbia County on 19 September 1856. At the time, he was listed as resident of Greenport in Columbia County. In the spring of 1858, Michael, Mary and their three children, moved to a farm one mile west of Sun Prairie Village in Burke Township of Dane County, Wisconsin. Later, the family moved to another farm three miles southwest of Sun Prairie Village. Michael, an illiterate, naturalized citizen of the United States, died suddenly of pneumonia at his home in Sun Prairie Township on a Tuesday evening. He was 54 years old. Little is known about Michael Manley's origins in Ireland and there is little hope of learning anything further from footprints that he himself left behind. The best chance for success is to locate some relative of his in the States. Unfortunately, there were no other Manleys in Columbia County, New York around the time he was there and there were none in Dane County, Wisconsin either. Two years after his death, in 1880, there were twenty-one Irish born Manleys in nine counties in the Badger state of Wisconsin. Nine of the twenty-one were married or widowed women, including his own widow, none of whom were likely to have been born Manley. The closest of these to Sun Prairie were two families in Dodge County and a single man in Darlington. |

- Two experts consulted do not agree on the origins of this surname. The Rev. Patrick Woulfe lists the surname with the Irish "O'Maonghaile" 'descendent of Maonghal' (gift-valour) and is pronounced O'Monhily or O'Monnilly. Anglicized as Munnelly, Monnelly, Monley or Manley. Found chiefly in County Donegal and North Connacht (Counties Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim). Edward MacLysaght acknowledges that Manley is a variant of this surname, found chiefly in County Mayo, although he insists that Manley is an English surname. MacLysaght's primary reference to Manley is as a variation of the County Cork name "O'Máinle" which he says is often pronounced Mauly there.

| Biography* | Michael Manley, 1865-1931: Michael's death record and obituary list his birth date as 20 January 1867. However, the evidence for his birth as well as that of both older and younger siblings suggest that he was probably born in 1865, not 1867. Several years prior to his marriage in 1898, Michael left the home farm and acquired a farm of his own one mile east of Sun Prairie. He lived there until 1900 when he moved to a farm four miles southeast of Sun Prairie where he spent the rest of his life. Michael was always an active figure in the community life of his township. He was school treasurer for twelve years and town treasurer for two years. Michael, 66, died on a Saturday. He was survived by his wife, six children and four grandchildren. He was also survived by three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were conducted the following Monday at Sacred Hearts by the Rev. Hausler. Graveside services were conducted by a nephew, the Rev. Leo Skalitzky. Pallbearers were Charles Alberts, Charles Drunasky, Louis Drunasky Sr., William Kruse Sr., John Blaska Jr. and Fred Strohmenger. | Biography* | Patrick Manley, 1858-1885: There is conflicting evidence for Patrick's birth date and place. A birth date of 29 October 1858 is calculated from his death date and age on his tombstone (died on 13 January 1885 at age 26 years, 2 months, 14 days). A birth date of 1 November 1858 is listed in his church funeral record. Most sources list his birthplace as Wisconsin; at least one lists it as New York. Patrick was working in the woods near Detroit, Minnesota with a crew of lumbermen harvesting timber when he was struck on the head by a falling limb. The accident happened on Monday 12 January 1885. Patrick, 26, died the next day. The postmaster in Detroit sent a telegram to the postmaster in Sun Prairie on Wednesday advising of the tragedy. Patrick's brother Con went to Detroit to retrieve the remains, arriving back in Sun Prairie on Tuesday the 20th. The funeral was held the next day. Have not located Detroit, Minnesota. It is not listed in the index to the 1999 edition of the AAA map of Minnesota. There is a listing for a Detroit Lakes in Becker County. |
