Biography* John Anderson Hyslop, 1877-1947:
Born on a farm near Dane, Wisconsin of Scotland born parents, John lived there until circa 1940 when he retired to the village. He was a man of medium height and build with grey eyes and dark hair.

John died at a Madison hospital on a Sunday after a short illness. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, three sons, and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Wednesday in the Hyslop residence in Dane by the Rev. E. J. Blair, pastor of the Lodi Presbyterian church.

Biography* Russell P. "Jack" Hyslop, 1913-1995:
Jack worked the family farm near Dane for many years. Later he worked at the Mendota Health Institute. Several years before his death, Jack moved to Texas. He liked traveling the southwest in his camper.

Jack died on a Monday in Portland, Texas of cancer. He was 81. Jack was survived by his former wife, one son, his current wife, one sister, and one brother.

His funeral was held on Thursday at the Dane Immanuel United Church of Christ with Rev. Richard Williams officiating.

Biography* Martha Johnson Conerty, 1837-1921:
Records of Martha's birth date are inconsistent. Her county death record lists her birth date as 19 November 1837 but her age at death as reported in the same record, 83 years/11 months/19 days, calculates to a birth date of 12 November 1837. Her obituary lists her birth date as 03 November 1837. Martha came to the United States circa 1862 settling first in Caledonia, Minnesota later moving to Rushford, Minnesota and finally Chatfield. She was employed in woolen mills in all three places. Her marriage to Henry Conerty in 1867 was witnessed by Denis and Margaret Slaughter.


Martha, age 83, died at her home in West Chatfield on a Tuesday from the effects of gangrene. She had been in failing health since early in the spring. Martha was survived by an adopted son and several nephews living in Fillmore County. Her funeral was held on Thursday from Saint Mary's Catholic church and officiated by the Rev. Maddock. Martha was buried next to her husband.

Mary died at her home early on a Friday after an illness of about two months. She was survived by one daughter, two sisters, and one brother. Funeral services were held on Monday from her residence and then from Saint Mary's. Six nephews acted as pallbearers: George Kane, Raymond Kane, Matthew Colwell, Harold Colwell, Earl Colwell, and Paul Colwell.

Biography* Lloyd Karr, 1912-1990:
The youngest of four, with an older brother and two older sisters, Lloyd was born in Monticello to a father born in Ilinois and a mother born in New Brunswick, Canada to Scotland born parents. The family moved to Webster City when Lloyd was still an infant. In 1920, they owned a mortgaged house at 1515 Union Street in Webster City's 2nd ward. Lloyd's father worked as a teamster and his mother worked as a washerwoman. A lifelong resident of Webster City, Lloyd recieved his license to practice law in 1937. Among highlights of his legal career, Lloyd was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1957. He served for eight years as Hamilton County attorney from 1940 to 1948, with time out to serve in the Army in World War II. Lloyd served on the committtee for the Tenure of Judges for the district court and state Supreme Court, and was on the first nominating committee tor justices to the Supreme Court. He also chaired the committee on the complete revision of the Criminal Code of Iowa. Lloyd served on the Board of Governors of the Iowa State Bar Association, and was elected president in 1962. He received the Bar Association’s Award of Merit in 1968. Lloyd was serving on the Editorial Board of the American College of Probate Counsel at the time of his death. He wrote hundreds of articles published in the U.S. and Canada on informing the public of its legal rights and remedies, and received special recognition from the American Bar Association for this work.


In 1954, Lloyd became publisher of the Webster City Daily Freeman-Journal and co-owner of the local radio station KJFJ. He later sold the paper to the B.F. Shaw Publishing Co., and sold his interest in the radio station to co-owners and founders, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Warren. He later purchased two competing newspapers in Winter Park, Florida - the Winter Park Sun and Winter Park Herald - and merged them, serving as publisher for seven years. Lloyd was also active in Republican politics, serving as the county party chairman for 10 years and also as district chairman. He received the Legion of Honor Degree of the Order of the De Molay. Lloyd served in various offices of the American Legion, and as commander of the Webster City Legion Post 191. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church of Webster City, the Acacia Lodge 176 A.F. and A.M., Royal Arch Masons, Knight Templar Lodge, Za Ga Zig Shrine of Des Moines, was a former Elks Club member, was a Moose Lodge member, and was a member of the Des Moines Club.


Lloyd Karr, age 78, died on a Sunday of cancer at the Hamilton County Hospital. He was survived by his wife; a daughter; a son; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Eunice Moberly and Beulah Grandgeorge, all of Webster City. Funeral services were held Thursday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Webster City with the Rev. James Duster officiating. Foster Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorials were requested to Meals on Wheels.

Biography* Clarisssa Kaump Brennan, 1898-????:
Born to a father born in Wisconsin and a mother, a first generation German-American, born in Minnesota, Clarissa was the oldest of five children. In 1920, the family lived in Preston, Fillmore County, Minnesota. Her father was a mail carrier. When her ex-husband died in 1946, she was living in Preston under her maiden name.

Biography* Ellen Kavanaugh Brennan, 1866-1954:
Ellen was a first generation Irish-American. She and her husband were farmers. In 1900 they were farming in High Forest township, Olmsted County, Minnesota. By 1920, Ellen and John had retired from farming and owned a house at 1116 Center Street West in the 2nd ward of Rochester, Olmsted County, Minnesota. By 1930, the house was estimated to be worth $10,000.

Biography* John Herman Kayartz, 1919-1995:
Herman served in the U. S. Army, Company F, during World War II. Afterwards, he worked for the Columbia County Highway Department for 20 years before retiring in 1985. He sang with the Barber Shop Quartet and the Barber Shoppers. He enjoyed sports and liked to fish.

A resident of Pacific Township, Herman died on a Wednesday at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. He was 75. Herman was survived by his wife, one daughter, three sons, nine grandchildren, one step-grandson, two brothers, and one sister. His funeral was held on Saturday at Saint Mary's Catholic church in Portage with Rev. Thomas Fitzgerald officiating.

Biography* Ellen V. "Nellie" Keefe Delaney, 1893-1990:
Christened Ellen Margaret, her sponsors were Florence Halloran and Annie McDermott. She was confirmed into the Catholic faith at Saint Mary's Church on 23 October 1904 as Ellen Victoria. In later life, she was Nellie V. Born to a father, a first generation Irish-American, born in Wisconsin and a mother born in Michigan, Nellie grew up on a farm in Elmira township, Olmsted County, Minnesota. In 1920, she and her husband Rex were living in Chatfiled township, Fillmore County. In 1930, they were in Eyota township, Olmsted County.


Nellie V., of 1111 Eleventh Ave NW, Rochester, died on a Sunday at Bethany Samaritan Heights. She was 96. Nellie was survived by two daughters, two sons, eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildre. She was predeceased by a son, a grandson, three brothers and two sisters.

Mary came to Hudson from Stuyvesant circa 1902. She had a daughter, Elizabeth born circa 1892, but husband Daniel Martin was probably not the father. Mary and Daniel married sometime between 1920 and 1925.

There are no Mary Kennedys listed in the 1905 census of Hudson with children. These are three of the more obvious possibilites: She is not listed in the census; She is listed by an unknown married name; She is listed by her maiden name, divorced or unwed, and her child does not live with her.

Mary was a member of Saint Mary's parish and its Rosary Society. She died at home on a Thursday following an illness of eight days. Mary was survived by her husband, two sisters, two brothers, and one daughter. Her funeral was held on Monday from her home and then from Saint Mary's.

By 1900, his mother had died and Richard was boarding with Arthur and Nettie Whitlock in Hardwick Village, Denver township, Rock County, Minnesota and renting a farm. His widowed father and two brothers are living in the same village. By 1910, Richard is married with two children and owns a farm free of mortgage in Luverne township. By 1920, he has quit farming and moved to Luverne City's North ward.
