| Biography* | Helen F. Gerber McCarthy, 1911-2004: Helen was christened in December 1911 at Saint Edward's in Worthing, South Dakota. Her sponsors were her first cousin Georgia Snyder Devitt and Georgia's husband Frank. Raised in Worthing, Helen attended local elementary school. After grade school, she commuted weekly to Sioux Falls with her mother and sister where she attended Cathedral High School. In her sophomore year, Helen flunked Algebra (not her favorite - or best - subject). She was terrified to tell her mother. The reaction of mother must not have been too severe, Helen doesn't remember it! Helen greatly admired her high school Latin teacher, Margaret McNamara. Margaret was a graduate of Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. And so, after graduating high school, Helen attended Clarke College also, graduating in 1933. After college, Helen taught 5th grade for the 1933/34 school year in New Albin, Iowa. Her salary was $50/month. Rroom and board cost $30/month. She had no car nor did she need one. In May of 1934, her father died. She was released from her contract with New Albin and returned home to Worthing. She remained there for the next two years, teaching history at the Worthing high shool. Helen was related to some of her students. She also taught Dorothy Warsing the piano using a paper keyboard. Dorothy later rewarded her teacher by playing the real piano at Helen's wedding. |

| Biography* | Alice Goodman Mulcahy, 1856-1926: There are several unanswered questions about Alice Goodman. Born in New York to a mother also born in New York and a father born in either New York or Pennsylvania, Alice was married first to George Martin. The union of Alice Goodman and George Martin produced at least one , and possibly two, offspring. The known offspring was born in Colorado in 1878. However, Alice was living in Guthrie County, Iowa in 1884 when she was married to William Mulcahy by Minister J. Heslwood. Why was Alice in Iowa? And what happened to first husband, George Martin? In 1885, Alice and William Mulcahy are listed in the city of Stuart in Guthrie County but no children are listed. Where was the Colorado born daughter who would have been six-years-old? Further, when daughter Alice is born later in that year, she is listed as the mother's first! In 1900, Alice and William are listed in Dane County, Wisconsin with the three known children. However, Alice is listed as having four-children - all living. Since Alice and William were married in 1884, any legitimate children would be fifteen or less and would be likely living with the family. Mayhaps the fourth child was a Martin and had already left home? Alice died at her winter home in Bowman, North Dakota on a Tuesday. She and husband William had left the farm in Gem township for the winter - and in an early form of 'snowbirding' had moved into the nearest village! Her funeral was held on Thursday from Saint Charles Catholic church with burial in the church cemetery. Alice was survived by one son and two daughters. Neither she nor her daughters were memorialized by their given names being anonymously referred to as Mrs Mulcahy, etc. One daughter, Mrs Mulcahy of Dane, Wisconsin, must be the Colorado born Maud who was married to William's younger brother David. Not sure about the other daughter, Mrs Forgor of Detroit, Michigan. Is this daughter Alice? Or the unidentified fourth child? If there were four children, then one child must have predeceased her. |

| Biography* | Johanna Hanley Ryan, 1847-????: Johanna may have been born in Kilfinnane parish in County Limerick, Ireland. Our first record of her in the United States is in 1865 when she is living with her parents in Carrolton township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. Anna Dolan was a witness to her marriage in addition to her husband's brother Daniel. After her marriage, she lived on a farm in Foutain township of the same county. According to family lore, she and husband Michael had 13-children. She may have had two more after the family left Fillmore County. Several of her children died young including three of diptheria in 1880. Also according to family lore, Johannah died during childbirth in her 40's. If correct, this puts her death year in the range of 1886-1897 and she probably died in St Paul. |
