| Biography* | Catherine Galvin, 1839-1910: Catherine's birthdate is listed as 8 May 1841 on her tombstone. However, she was christened on 20 May 1839. Assuming that the month and the day-of-month on the tombstone are correct then Catherine was probably born on that date in 1839 and was two-years-older than whoever ordered the tombstone thought! The photograph was taken on an unknown date at an unknown place. It was found in the attic of the Thomas McCarthy (1863-1936) home farm in Sun Prairie Township by his daughter-in-law Isabel (nee Almond) (McCarthy) Bauman. Catherine came to the third ward of Hudson, New York circa 1852 with her widowed father and three older sisters. By 1855, at the age of 16, she was employed as a live-in servant with W'm and Harriet Terry. Later, in May of 1857, Catherine acted as christening sponsor for niece Margaret McCarty. Catherine died on a Thursday while on a visit to Colman, South Dakota. Her remains were brought back to her home that Saturday. The following Monday Catherine was laid to rest in the cemetery of Saint Michael's church of which she was a member. |

| Biography* | Ellen Galvin, 1834-1904: Ellen's parents were married in Solohead Parish, County Tipperary, Ireland. Five of her siblings were christened in the same parish. There is a gap in the records from 1829 to 1837 so there is no christening record for Ellen. She came to the United States circa 1852 with her widowed father and three sisters settling in Hudson, New York. One of the witnesses at her marriage to John McCarty was a Julia Galvin6. Nine years and four children later, in the fall of 1864, Ellen and John moved to Wisconsin. Sometime after John died in 1891, Ellen sold the farm to her sons Thomas and Patrick and moved into Sun Prairie Village. When son Patrick died without a will in 1896, leaving no spouse or issue, his parents were, by Wisconsin law, his heirs-at-law. Thus, his widowed mother Ellen was the sole heir to his estate. Patrick's estate included a half interest in a mortgage that he and brother Thomas had been given in 1894. The mortgage was paid off by 1899 and Ellen received her share of both principal and interest. However, something happened (that I haven't figured out yet!) in 1914 that landed son Thomas back in Court. Ellen contracted paralysis apoplexy in September or October of 1903. Despite the best efforts of Dr. S. J. Briggs, she died in her home on a Monday, two days after her seventieth birthday. Ellen died intestate. Her estate, which consisted of an uncashed draft on a foreign bank (Wouldn't you just love to know what foreign bank? According to family lore, Ellen had a brother Patrick Galvin who emigrated Ireland for Australia) in the amount of $503, was probated with son Thomas acting as Administrator. |

- Ellen had no known relatives named Julia Galvin and there were no other Julia Galvin's in the area. John, however, had a sister named Julia. It is possible that John's sister witnessed the marriage and that she was incorrectly recorded as a Galvin.

| Biography* | Mary Clancy Galvin Winans, 1870-1946: Born four years after her "father" died, Mary was christened on 4 April 1870 at Saint Mary's in Hudson as Mary Clancy, daughter of Denis Clancy and Ellen Galvin. Her sponsors were uncle Wm Fitzgerald, her mother's brother-in-law, and Bridget Galvin, her "father's" sister? The christening record is the only place where Mary is listed as a Clancy. Ever after she is listed as a Galvin. After her 1899 marriage before witnesses A. E. Smith and Bridget Teal, Mary continued to live in Hudson at various addresses: 37 North Front Street (Ward 2); 350 Diamond Street (Ward 4); 404 Warren Street (Ward 4); and 227 Partition Street (Ward 1). She worked as an operator at a knitting mill. Mary, suffering from failing eyesight, fell down the stairs on Monday, New Year's Eve, at the home of her daughter, Mrs Helen Bernockie of 340 State St. Mary died in Hudson City Hospital on Wednesday as a result of that fall. She had lived practically her whole life in Hudson, the last several years with her daughter. Mary was survived by three daughters and several grandchildren. Her funeral was held on Saturday at St.Mary's. |

| Biography* | Mary Galvin Manley, 1833-1921: Born 1833 in County Tipperary, Ireland - on 24 May according to her Dane County death record, informant unknown, or in April according to her obituary. Mary came to the United States circa 1852 with her widowed father and three sisters. In 1854, she was married to Michael Manley at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Hudson, New York. The marriage was witnessed by Richard O'Sullivan and Ellen J. Moriarity. In late 1857 or early 1858, she and Michael moved to a farm in Dane County, Wisconsin. By the mid-1860s, they had been joined in Dane County by the families of three of her sisters. In her later years, Mary lived with her son Michael, occasionally visiting her other children. While on one of these visits to her son Cornelius' home in Sun Prairie Village, Mary died on a Saturday. She was preceded in death by her husband and by four of her ten children. She also was survived by eighteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Her funeral service was held at Sacred Hearts on the following Tuesday and conducted by Rev J. J. Salentin. Pallbearers were Frank Tracy, Joseph Tracy Jr., Harold Manley, Mark Manley, Vernon Manley, and Robert Manley, all grandsons. |

Patrick's son Thomas is buried next to this Michael's wife in Hudson Cemetery. According to Mary Galvin Manley's obituary, she and a sister came to the United States circa 1849 with an uncle. Although there is no corroborating evidence in Solohead Parish church records, this Michael could be that uncle. He lived in Hudson since 1850, first in the first ward, then in the second. On 25 Oct 1859, William, a native of County Limerick, was naturalized in County court of Columbia County, New York state. After his first wife Mary died in 1857, Michael married a second Mary, Mary Campbell, between 1865 and 1870. No record of either of them after 1870. |

| Biography* | Patrick Galvin, 1800-1892: Patrick Galvin and Catherine O'Donoghue lived in Drumwood townland, Solloghodmore (Solohead) civil parish, County Tipperary during the 1820s, 30s and 40s. This was probably Catherine's home parish and just as probably was not Patrick's. Church parish records, which begin in 1810, show no events involving a Galvin in the decade between 1810 and when Patrick's daughter Brigid is christened in 1820. By contrast, there are events for four O'Donoghue families during that decade. Drumwood townland is near the western Tipperary border with County Limerick, approximately half-way between Cappawhite and Oola. Both Cappawhite and Oola should be shown on the map of Ireland in any typical world atlas. The church marriage of Patrick and Catherine is recorded in 1827, after the christenings of their first two children in 1820 and 1825. Were these first two children in fact illegitimate as recorded? Probably not. There is a plausible, albeit speculative, explanation for this. The English government began imposing the Penal Laws in Ireland near the end of the seventeenth century (1695). One of the purposes of these laws was the eradication of Catholicism. And although this eradication was unsuccessful, it did have the effect of eliminating the church hierarchy and essentially driving the practice of the religion underground. One consequence of this law, intended or not, is that there are no church records for this period. The English began to repeal the penal laws about one-hundred-years later. It took another thirty or forty years for the church hierarchy to be reestablished and for the bishops to regain control. In the meantime, priests had been allowed by the state to continue performing legal marriages. They performed christenings also but the state had no interest in those. Patrick Galvin and Catherine O'Donoghue lived, loved and procreated during the transition period after the repeal of the penal laws. A priest probably married them and the marriage probably took place before they cohabited and before they conceived their first child. But, that marriage was never recorded in either a civil register nor a church register. Since the registers in Solohead Parish begin in 1810, there must have been another reason. Marriages, unlike christenings, were traditionally performed in the home, not the church. The bishops, during the transition period after repeal of the penal laws, authorized the collection of fees for the performance of marriages. No fee - no record! It seems likely that at least one of the reasons the bishops did this was to encourage the use of the parish priest, that is, a priest under the bishop's control. However, there were still some, if not many, priests, who were not aligned to any bishop, who would have performed the service for a meal. Presumably a more affordable alternative for the average church mouse. So, when Patrick and Catherine took their first child to the church to be christened, there was no record of their marriage. The child was thus recorded as illegitimate. After Patrick and Catherine were married again - in the church - all was right with the world - at least the bishop's version of the world. Patrick's year of immigration to the United States is not known but it's believed that he came to the States circa 1852 with four of his daughters. Patrick first appears in Ghent Township, Columbia County, New York circa 1853. An illiterate, alien, widowed pauper, he is living in the county poor house where he will remain for at least the next two years. In 1860, he is working as a farm laborer and living with his daughter Ellen and her husband John McCarty in Claverack Township in the same county. In the late 1850s, his daughters and their families begin moving from Columbia County, New York to Dane County, Wisconsin. Patrick migrates with his children and lives with various of them in that place. By 1870, he has acquired citizenship and is living with daughter Margaret and her husband Lawrence Dolan. In 1880, he is back with Ellen and John and has become crippled. Patrick was referred to by his daughters as the "Dava." The meaning of this appelation, if any, is lost in the mists. He was also missing a finger. According to family lore, he cut the finger off himself to avoid going to war. Since he was in his sixties when the United States Civil War began he must have left the finger in Ireland. He probably lost the finger in an accident but that he cut it off himself made for a much better story. There is also a story that Patrick, in order to avoid some soldiers who were looking for him, hid down a well. The Dava died on a Saturday in 1892, probably in Sun Prairie, and is buried with daughter Margaret and son-in-law Lawrence in the Dolan plot in Sacred Hearts Cemetery. The stone erected in his memory is relatively new and lists his death year, incorrectly, as 1895. It is not known, in 1999, who erected this stone nor whether it replaced an earlier stone. |

| Biography* | Patrick Galvin, 1863-1898: Patrick was christened on 19 September 1963 at Saint Mary's in Hudson. His sponsors were uncle William Galvin & Catherine Clancy. Hudson cemetery records list this man as single but believe that is incorrect. There is a married Ellen Galvin born Ireland circa 1862 buried in the same lot as this Patrick. There is no Ellen Galvin of this age in either the 1870 or 1880 census. Of course, if Galvin is her married name she wouldn't be listed in the census with that name, or, if it is her maiden name she may not be in this country yet. Have assumed that she is Patrick's wife. Her obituary lists her as the widow of Patrick Galvin, that she lived and was employed at the Hudson Orphans Asylum and that she has a married daughter, Mrs William White, living in Hudson. |

| Biography* | Thomas Galvin, 1839-1864: Born in Drumwood townland, Solohead parish, County Tipperary in 1835 or -36. There is a gap in the Solohead church records for the years 1829 to 1837 so no record of his christening survives. Thomas probably came to the United States in late 1855 or early 1856. The first evidence of him in the U.S.A. is in August 1856 when he was a sponsor for the christening of nephew Cornelius Manley. He was also a sponsor for the christening of nephew William Mulcahy in 1859. In 1860, he was living with his sister and her husband, Dennis Mulcahy and Catherine Galvin, in the fourth ward of Hudson, New York. Thomas' Final Papers for United States citizenship were dated 26 Oct 1861. His 1862 marriage was witnessed by William Galvin (a cousin?) and Bridget Hogan. In 1863, Thomas was a christening sponsor for the third time, for nephew Thomas McCarty. Thomas Galvin accidentally drowned in February 1864 and was buried in the Hudson City Cemetery. The photograph was taken with his sister Margaret Galvin Dolan on an unknown date at Forshew's in Hudson, New York. It was found in the attic of the Thomas McCarthy (1863-1936) home farm in Sun Prairie Township by Isabel Almond McCarthy. Family lore attributed the photo to Thomas' brother Patrick. Based on what we know know about birth years of the Galvin brothers this seems unlikely. |
