Biography* Catherine McCarthy Brown, 1830-1873:
Catherine, age 25, was the sixth oldest of the seven children living with their mother, the matriarch Margaret McCarthy, in the 1855 census of the Town of Claverack in Columbia County, New York. And although other evidence suggests that Catherine was more probably born circa 1827, a birth year of 1830 has been recorded here to preserve the order of birth in the 1855 census. Catherine came to Claverack circa 1850 with her mother and five of her six siblings. Her older brother John had come two years earlier. After her marriage in 1859, Catherine and her husband were living in Hudson's 4th ward and later in Hudson's 2nd ward.

Catherine, about 43, died on a Wednesday of consumption. Her tombstone records her death date as 20 August. Another source lists her death date as 30 August.

Biography* Patrick McCarthy, 1833-1883:
Patrick was born in Ireland, probably in Kilmichael Parish, County Cork. He immigrated to the Town of Claverack in Columbia County, New York circa 1850 with his mother and several siblings, two years after his older brother John. An illiterate laborer, Patrick applied for United States citizenship. He was living in Hudson when he was granted Final Papers by the Justices Court on 20 October 1857. He worked on the railroad as a flagman for a time. He was married twice. At the time of his first marriage, Patrick was living in Hudson's 4th ward. Later, he lived in the Town of Greenport and finally at 3 Robinson Street in Hudson's 2nd ward. In the year ending 01 June 1880, Patrick had been unemployed for 10-months.

About 9 o'clock in the morning on Tuesday the 18th of September 1883, Patrick, about 50, was unloading a canal boat of coal. The boat was moored at the Albany and Rensselaer Iron and Steel Company's dock in Hudson. He was severely injured by a large lump of coal which fell about ten feet striking him on the head. Patrick walked to the office of Dr. H. Lyle Smith, who examined the wound. The skull was not fractured although the wound was a serious one. The wound was on the left side of the head, well back and above the ear. Dr. Smith dressed the wound and sent Patrick home in his private carriage. Later, the doctor visited him and found it necessary, in order to give him relief, to trepan him. The doctor found beneath the skull a clot of blood, caused by the rupture of a blood vessel. The unfortunate Patrick expired about eleven o'clock that night. The funeral was conducted on Friday from his late residence and then from Saint Mary's with a High Mass.

He is buried with his first wife and two of his children. Patrick's tombstone in the Hudson cemetery lists his birth and death years as 1841 and 1886 respectively. The tombstone appears to be relatively new - it must have been installed many years after Patrick's death. It's not known who bought the stone nor where they got the dates.
