Biography* Josephine Neuheisel Hess, 1844-1928:
Josephine's tombstone and obituary both list her birth year as 1843. However, the Neuheisel family did not arrive in the United State until September 1844 and Josephine is not listed on the ship's passenger list. Moreover, all pieces of evidence, save one, list her birthplace as Wisconsin not Germany. This suggests that Josephine was born in 1844 - not 1843 - and that her mother was six-months pregnant when the family got off the boat. Josephine was probably born in Lyons Township, Walworth County, Wisconsin. Baptismal records of the Burlington church, where several of her later siblings were christened, do not exist prior to 1846. She married her third cousin, Jacob Hess, in 1869 at Saint Luke's in Plain, Wisconsin. Her brother, Balthasar Neuheisel, was one of the witnesses. The other witness was William Girring.

Josephine, age 83, died on a Tuesday at the home of her son-in-law, James McKune. She was survived by one son, two daughters, twenty-two grandchildren, and one brother. She was preceded in death by her husband and by six of her nine children. Her funeral was held on Thursday at Saint John's in Spring Green with the Rev. C. B. Weikmann officiating.

Biography* Mary Neuheisel Hohn, 1884-1976:
Mary's county death record lists her birthplace as La Crosse, Wisconsin. Since she was the youngest child it would have been plausible that she was born in La Crosse while the family was on its way to South Dakota. However, Mary was christened Maria Neiheisel on 25 November 1884 at Saint Luke's in Plain, Wisconsin by the Rev. Heinrich Koenig with sponsor Maria Schwartz. A La Crosse birth seems unlikely. Do not know who provided the birthplace on the death record nor where their information came from. Mary was married in Parkston, South Dakota before witnesses Kathryn F. Hohn, her husband's sister, and Joe E. Neuheisel, her own brother. Both Mary's and Henry's obituaries list the marriage date as 9 February 1909. However, the county marriage record lists it as 11 February 1909. The couple lived in Parkston for a time after their marriage. By 1931, they were living in Ethan, Davison County, South Dakota. By 1947, they were living in Letcher, Sanborn County, South Dakota.

Mary, age 92, died of pulmonary edema, myocardial failure and arteriosclerosis on a Wednesday at Saint Benedict's Hospital in Parkston. She was survived by three daughters, one son, and nine grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, three daughters, two sons, one sister, and three brothers. Funeral services were held on Monday from Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell.

Biography* Philip Neuheisel, 1846-1922:
Probably born in Lyons township, Walworth County, Wisconsin, Philip was christened on 24 April 1846 at Immaculate Conception in Burlington, Wisconsin. His baptism was sponsored by Philipp Prasch and Barbara Prasch, neighbors of the Neuheisel family in Lyons township. Circa 1851, Philip's family moved to Franklin township in Sauk County. He grew up there and in 1969 he married Catherine Bettinger at Saint Luke's in Plain, Wisconsin. The marriage was performed by the Rev. Theo. Beau and was witnessed by his brothers, John and Balthasar Neuheisel.

In his earlier years, Philip worked as a farmer, first in Franklin township and then in Spring Green township, both in Sauk County. By 1900, he owned a mortgaged house in Spring Green Village and was working for the railroad. After Philip's sister Barbara's husband, George Hornung, died in 1877, Barbara's daughter Anne Hornung came to live with her uncle and aunt, Philip and Catherine Neuheisel. By 1900, Anne was being listed as "adopted" by them. In 1901, he recieved serious burns in a gasoline explosion and fire that claimed the life of his niece. After his wife Catherine died in 1913, he moved to Montello, Wisconsin in Marquette County to live with his son Louis on Nebraska Street.

Philip, age 76, died at his home in Montello on a Tuesday. His death occured suddenly from a stroke of apoplexy about an hour after eating a hearty meal. Funeral services were held on Thursday at Saint John's in Spring Green.

Biography* Philip Neuheisel, 1875-1963:
Birthplace listed in his county marriage as Spring Green was more probably Franklin Township. He was christened as Philip Jacob at Saint Luke's on 26 September 1875 by the Rev. L. Spitzlberger, with his uncle and aunt, Philip & Catherine (Bettinger) Neuheisel as sponsors. His 1903 marriage was performed by the Rev. John G. Lauer and witnessed by Joseph Lins and Louisa Rieder. Philip farmed in Spring Green Township of Sauk County until 1914. Then, he moved to a farm on the outskirts of Cashton in Jefferson Township, Monroe County, Wisconsin. In 1918, at age 42, Philip was of medium height and build with brown eyes and black hair. In 1944, he moved into Cashton Village.

Philip, age 87, died on a Sunday at a La Crosse hospital after an illness of about two weeks. He was survived by his wife, five sons, two daughters, 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Services were held on Wednesday at Sacred Heart in Cashton. A nephew, Rev. Donald Lins, officiated.
