Biography* Agnes Neuheisel Pulvermacher, 1848-1921:
The first of triplets born over the 8th and 9th of December in 1848, Agnes was christened with her womb-mates at Immaculate Conception Catholic church in Burlington, Wisconsin on December 10th by the Rev. Michael Wisbauer. Her sponsors were Agnes Böschert and Francis Leitz. There is conflicting evidence of the triplet's birth year. Agnes' tombstone and obituary both list her birth year as 1847. Her burial record at Saint Luke's in Plain and her Sauk County death record both list the year as 1848. However, the county death record also lists her age at death as 73 years, 1 month and 24 days - which computes to 1847. There is no reason to suspect that the 1848 church record of the christening is inaccurate. In 1848, the survival rate for triplets was much less than that for single births. Catholics believed that a child who died unchristened wouldn't be allowed into heaven. Practicing Catholic parents would have had these children christened immediately after birth. For these reasons, we can be pretty sure that Agnes was born in 1848. We have no direct evidence of where the triplets were born. They were christened in Burlington in Racine County. But before and after 1848, the family was living in Lyons Township of Walworth County. This is a much more likely place of birth.

Circa 1851, the family moved from Walworth County to Franklin Township in Sauk County where Agnes grew up and was married. She gave birth to twelve children, five of whom died in infancy including twins. Assuming that all records (church, county, census, etc.) so far discovered are accurate - that is, to name of child, names of parents, and dates - then we can identify eleven of the children but not the multiple birth. Have listed the unnamed twelfth child, for the present, as the eighth born and twin of son Albert.

Agnes died, the first of the triplets to do so, in 1921 of liver cancer. She was 73. Agnes was survived by her husband, one son, six daughters, two brothers, and two sisters.

Biography* Augusta Neuheisel Gerber, 1838-1903:
Born in what is now the German state of Saarland, Augusta came to the United States at the age of six years with her parents and her younger brother Balthasar. The family sailed from La Havre, France on board the Duchess D'Orleans captained by A. Richardson and arrived at the Port of New York on 5 September 1844. The Neuheisels spent their first six years in Hudson Township, Walworth County, Wisconsin before finally settling in Franklin Township in Sauk County circa 1851. Augusta was listed as Justine Neuheisel in seven christenings at Saint Luke's in Plain, Wisconsin between 1854 and 1870 including four of her own children. She was never listed as Augusta in Saint Luke's records and was never listed as Justine anywhere else. On 17 August 1891, "Augustine" and Fred sold 160-acres to their sons Fred Jr and Henry. Augusta marked the deed. In February 1892, "Augustena" and Fred sold 160-acres to Paul Ysbranda. Again she marked the deed.

Augusta, age 65, died at her home on a Saturday. She had been in poor health for several years. Circa 1899, Augusta went to California to try a change of climate but no relief was found so she returned to Worthing. Services were held at the Catholic church on Monday with the Rev. Boley officiating. Augusta was buried in the Worthing cemetery next to her daughter, Eliza Snyder, who had predeceased her. Sometime after her husband's death, she was moved next to him.
So let her sleep that dreamless sleep,
No sorrows clustering round her head,
Be comforted, ye loved who weep,
She lives with God -- she is not dead.

Born in the hamlet of Jägersburg in what is now the German state of Saarland, Balthasar came to the United States before his third birthday with his parents and his sister Augusta. The family sailed from La Havre, France on board the Duchess D'Orleans captained by A. Richardson and arrived at the Port of New York on 5 September 1844. The Neuheisels spent their first years in Lyons Township, Walworth County, Wisconsin before finally settling in Franklin Township in Sauk County circa 1851.

On 27 February 1864, Balthasar, a 22-year-old farmer with hazel eyes, dark brown hair, fair complexion, and measuring 5 feet-6 inches in height, enlisted in the 36th Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry at Madison, Wisconsin for a period of three years. He was paid $60 of a $300 bounty (an enticement for enrolling), given the rank of Private and assigned to Company A. He was mustered in at Madison on 1 March. Balthasar was with his company from March through June and into July of 1864. On or about 18 July, he was taken sick while working on a fort in front of Petersburg, Virginia. He was sent to the field hospital on 20 July and was then admitted to the hospital at City Point, Virginina on 21 July with typhoid fever and dysentery. He was transferred on 27 July and entered the hospital at Davids Island in New York harbor on 1 August with chronic diarrhea. He was transferred again to the hospital at Corwalt Barracks, Fort Wood, Bedloes Island, New York harbor on 27 September (diagnosis not given) and released on 30 September. He rejoined his company on 5 October. On 5 February 1865, he was captured by Confederate forces at Hatches Run, Virginia and confined to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia on the 6th. He was paroled from Libby Prison on February 15th and sent to Benton Barracks, Missouri on 19 February arriving there on 24th. He was furloughed for 30 days to Franklin Township, Sauk County, Wisconsin on 27 February. He returned on 31 March and was sent back to his regiment on 9 April.
NOTE. According to family lore, when Balthasar left home to join the army, his father George gave him a $10 bill for emergencies. Balthasar, who had long hair, kept the rolled up bill behind his ear. After he was captured, he used the bill to bribe his way out of Libby Prison.

Balthasar's three year hitch ended early when Lee surrendered ending the war. He was mustered out near Jeffersonville, Indiana on 12 July 1865. When he separated, he was owed the $240 balance of his bounty plus nine months back pay. After he returned home, on 2 March 1866, Balthasar was granted 76.5-acres of land from his parents for $500. The land was in three parcels, 56.5-acres in Section 7 and 20-acres in Section 18, both of Franklin Township. Balthasar was married in 1873 by the Rev. F. X. Heller. One of the witnesses was his brother John. On 16 June 1877, Balthasar Neuheisel, Philip Neuheisel, Josephine Neuheisel (now Hess), Margaretha Neuheisel (now Hutter), Francis Neuheisel, Agnes Neuheisel (now Pulvermacher) and Barbara Neuheisel (now Hornung) all of Franklin Township, Sauk County and Justina Neuheisel (now Gerber) of Lincoln County, Dakota Territory - all heirs of John Adam Neuheisel (registered in the name of George Neuheisel] granted to John Neuheisel of Franklin Township 180.75-acres in seven lots all in Franklin Township, consisting of 4 lots totaling 103.25-acres in Section 18, 1 lot of 20-acres in Section 9, 1 lot of 40-acres in Section 31, and 1 lot of 17,5-acres in Section 7, for $664. Balthasar and Philip signed, the rest marked. Justina, of the Dakota Territory, was represented by Atty. John Born. In 1882, Balthasar applied to the Bureau of Pensions, Department of the Interior for an invalid's pension alleging that, while in the service of his country, he contracted diarrhea, rheumatism and disease of the liver from which he was now partially disabled. This application was approved beginning 21 February 1882 for $4 per month. On 18 November 1891 the pension was increased to $6 per month.

There's a story told by Henry Neuheisel, son of Balthasar, to his own son Leonard, that Balthasar Neuheisel went out in the woods one day to chop firewood, lay down his axe and walked away. He came back three years later, entered the kitchen during dinner and sat down at his place without a word. The family dog came over and lay at his feet. On 28 September 1891, Balthasar was granted 14+ acres, in two parecls, both north of Honey Creek in Section 9 of Franklin Township from Frederich and Emma Schoenman for $418. On 11 April 1892, Balthasar was granted 10-acres in Section 9 of Franklin Township from Ludwig and Gustina Bettinger for $80. On 3 August 1892, Balthasar signed a will, witnessed by D. D. Davies and Robert Hanson both of Spring Green, leaving all of his earthly possessions to his beloved wife Theresia,

Balthasar, age 50, died on a Wednesday of heart-dropsy the result of chronic rheumatism. He was attended in his last illness by Dr. E. G. Cristman of Spring Green. Balthasar was survived by his wife, three sons, and one daughter. His funeral was held on Friday from Saint Luke's with the Rev. Sturm officiating. The procession to the cemetery was the largest ever witnessed in Plain up to that time.

Biography* Barbara Neuheisel Hornung Kurt, 1848-1924:
The last of triplets born over the 8th and 9th of December in 1848, Barbara was christened with her womb-mates at Immaculate Conception Catholic church in Burlington, Wisconsin on December 10th by the Rev. Michael Wisbauer. Her sponsors were John and Barbara Prasch, who were neighbors of the Neuheisels in Lyons Township. There is no direct evidence of where the triplets were born. They were christened in Burlington in Racine County. But before and after 1848, the family was living in Lyons Township of Walworth County. This is a much more likely place of birth. Circa 1851, the family moved from Lyons Township to Franklin Township in Sauk County. On 10 December 1913, Barbara Hornung of Dane County was granted Lot 8 of Block 30 in the original plat of Sauk City by Frank and Maggie Dresen for $550. (Is this our Barbara? Our Barbara's name was Kurt not Hornung!) On 3 August 1915, Mrs. Mary A. Hornung of Dane County granted Lots 9 & 10 of Block 23 in Sauk City Village to Carl Henn for $1300. (Is this Mrs. George Hornung, formerly Mary Anne Gmeinder, Barbara's daughter-in-law?)

Barbara, age 75, died on a Friday morning at the home of her daughter in Minneapolis. She was survived by one daughter, one son, two stepdaughters, and one stepson. She was preceded in death by two husbands, one daughter, and two sons. Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning at Saint Michael's in Dane, Wisconsin with the Rev. G. A. Hauselar officiating.
