Biography* Johann Adam "George" Neuheisel, 1801-1877:
George Neuheisel used three given names during his lifetime - Johann (or John), Adam, and George - in various combinations. Some examples from German records are: Johann Adam in 1836 marriage record (signed Adam); Johann Adam in child's 1837 birth record (signed Johann Adam); Johann Georg in children's 1838 & 1840 birth records (both signed Johann Georg); Georg in child's 1841 birth record (given name not signed). From these examples and from records in the United States, it seems likely that his legal name was John Adam but that he used the name George. George emigrated from his native land, with wife and children, in 1844. The family left Europe from the port of La Havre, France on the steamship Duchess D'Orleans captained by A. Richardson and arrived at the port of New York on the 5th of September in that year. The family came directly to Burlington in Racine County, Wisconsin as far as we know. And shortly thereafter moved into Lyons Township in Walworth County, the next county west.

On 7 July 1946, John George Neuheisel of Walworth County, Wisconsin received certificate 23241 for a 40-acre lot in Lyons Township from the U.S. Land Office in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in exchange for a payment of $50 ($1.25 per acre) made on the same date. On 10 February 1848, during the presidency of James K. Polk and in the 72nd year of U.S. independence, John George Neuheisel recieved a patent for the land to which certificate 23241 entitled him. On 18 October 1851, John George Neuheisel deeded his holdings in Walworth County. He and Theresia moved to Franklin Township in Sauk County by ox team and covered wagon. For many years the early settlers near Plain traveled, generally on foot, to Sauk City or to the Leidig home in Honey Creek Township to attend mass. The Rev. Max Gärtner, of Roxbury and Sauk City, offered the first mass in the village on September 21, 1857 in the log house of George and Theresia Neuheisel.

George, age 75, died on a Friday. His funeral was held the following day from Saint Luke's and was conducted by the Rev. N. Flamang. It is presumed that George was buried in Old Saint Luke's cemetery, the cemetery that he and Theresia donated to the Bishop, but no tombstone survives. There are two identifiable Neuheisel plots in Old Saint Luke's cemetery. One plot has stones in memory of his wife Theresia, his daughter Mary and his son Maximillian. The other plot has a stone in memory of his son Balthasar. The New Saint Luke's cemetery [wasn't opened until 1918.)

Land Transactions in Sauk County
On 2 July 1852, George and Theresia granted a deed for 5-acres in Franklin Township, excepting one-rod-wide off the north end for a road, to Charles Lamb for $18.
On 14 October 1853, George Neuheisel were granted a deed for a 40-acre lot in Franklin Township for $50 from Curtis & Nancy Bates.
On 1 February 1855, George Neuheisel were granted a deed for an 80-acre lot in Franklin Township for $200 from John & Sarah Noble.
On 23 July 1855, George Neuheisel of Sauk County applied to purchase a 40-acre lot in Franklin Township adjoining the 80-acre lot he already owned there (this application contains George Neuheisel signature). He was issued certificate 27379 for the 40-acre lot on the same day after payment of $40 ($1 per acre). On 1 June 1858, during the presidency of James Buchanan and in the 82nd year of U.S.A. independence, George Neuheisel recieved a patent for the land to which certificate 27379 entitled him.
On 2 October 1856, during the presidency of Franklin Pierce and in the 81st year of U.S.A. independence, George Neuheisel recieved a patent for the land to which certificate 16038 entitled him. (certificate received from the U.S. Land Office in Mineral Point, Wisconsin for a 40-acre lot in Franklin Township)
On 6 June 1859, George Neuheisel were granted a deed for a 10-acre lot in Franklin Township for $45 from Mr. & Mary Schomman.
On 7 August 1865, George and Theresia deeded an acre of land in Franklin Township to John Martin Henni, Bishop of Milwaukee, for $1. The land to be used as a Catholic burying ground - known today as the Old St.Luke's Cemetery.
On 2 March 1866, George and Theresia deeded a total of 76.5-acres in Franklin Township, in three parcels, to son Balthasar Neuheisel for $500.
On 13 June 1866, George and Theresia leased a total of 127.5-acres in Franklin Township, in four parcels, to Frederick Gerber for 10-years. Frederick to pay $1000 for the lease plus one-third of all grain, of every description, grown on said premises. The grain to be delivered in bushels on or before the first of June of each year. In addition, one-third of all potatoes and other vegetables grown will be payed and Frederick will keep hay provided for two cows.
On 16 March 1869, George Neuheisel were granted a deed for a 3.25-acre lot in Franklin Tonwship for $50 from Fred & Augusta Gerber.
On 29 September 1873, George Neuheisel entered into an agreement to lease/sell 170.5-acres, in six parcels, to his son John Neuheisel for $450 paid now and $1100 to be paid in the future. John agreed to pay the $1100 as follows: $100 before October 1st on each of the first nine years and $200 on October 1st of the 10th year all w/o interest but John also agrees to pay all taxes plus one-third of all the grain and hay raised on the place to George and his wife as long as either of them shall live. If the contract is completed and all payments made, John shall recieve a warranty deed. if not then all payments will be considered rent and John will have no interest in the place.

Biography* John Adam Neuheisel, 1848-1931:
The second of triplets born over the 8th and 9th of December in 1848, John was christened with his womb-mates at Immaculate Conception Catholic church in Burlington, Wisconsin on December 10th by the Rev. Michael Wisbauer. His sponsors were Jacob and Catharina Prasch, neighbors of the Neuheisels in Lyons Township). There is no direct evidence of where the triplets were born. Although christened in Burlington in Racine County, the family was living in Lyons Township of Walworth County, before and after 1848. This is a much more likely place of birth. Circa 1851, the family moved from Lyons Township onto a dairy farm in Franklin Township, south of the village of Plain, in Sauk County, Wisconsin. On 29 September 1873, John Neuheisel entered into an agreement to lease/buy 170.5-acres, in six parcels, from his father George Neuheisel for $450 paid now and $1100 to be paid in the future.

John and Elizabeth came to the Dakota Territory in late 1886. There John applied for a 160-acre-homestead in Starr Township of Hutchinson County. The application, No. 8915, was made on 23 November of that year at the U.S. Land Office in Yankton, Dakota Territory (now South Dakota). He paid $14 for the parcel and occupied the place on 1 December. On 17 February 1894, a patent was issued by the Montana State Land Office. By that time, he had built a 30x18 ft one-story frame house, a 22x12 ft frame barn, a 22x16 ft granary, corn crib, outhouses, fencing, dug two wells and had 90-acres under cultivation for seven seasons. Total value of improvements - about $1000. John was thirty-eight when he moved to South Dakota in 1886. The only photo we have of him was taken with his Wisconsin siblings probably about 1896 when his younger sister Margaret Hutter died. In 1930, he was living at 106 Walnut Street, Parkston in a house he owned. The house was valued at $3,000. His daughter Lizzie, age 40 and unmarried, was living with him.

John, who had lived in Parkston for several years, died at home early on a Sunday morning of arterio sclerosis and cerebral thrombosis. He was 82 years of age. Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning at Saints Peter and Paul Church with the pastor Rev. Jos. Hensbach officiating. He was buried in the church cemetery. John's nephew Ignatius Blasius came up from Sioux City to attend the funeral.

Biography* John J. Neuheisel, 1876-1947:
John was christened on 13 February 1876 at St Luke's in Plain, Wisconsin by the Rev. C. Lieghardt and sponsored by his uncle Balthasar Neuhausel. John grew to be a man of medium height and build, with blue eyes and light colored hair. In 1900, he was living with his father in Starr Township, Hutchinson County and was working as a well driller. By 1910, he was a farmer, who owned a mortgaged farm also in Starr Township. He lived on the farm until 1939, when he moved to Parkston. He lived there for the rest of his life except for two years in Portland, Oregon.

John's marriage was performed by the Rev. S. S. Brones before witnesses Matta Schumacher, her brother?, and Mary Neuheisel, his sister. Not sure where this marriage took place. The Davison County marriage record lists Goshen, South Dakota as the place. His own obituary lists Emsley, South Dakota. John was a man of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair. He was a member of Father Dalman Chapter of the Knights of Columbus.

John, age 71, died suddenly of a heart attack at the family dairy on a Friday. He was survived by his wife, four sons, one daughter, six grandchildren, one brother, and two sisters. Two sons preceded him in death. Funeral services were held on Monday morning at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. P. N. Scheier. Pall bearers were Jake Blasius, Fred Hohn, Mike Loos, M. C. Sullivan, John Humpa and Ben Brown.

Biography* Joseph E. Neuheisel, 1883-1922:
Joseph's tombstone incorrectly lists his birthyear as 1884. There is also conflicting evidence of his birthdate. On his World War I Draft Registration he lists his own birth date as 15 March 1883. His birth date as calculated from his age at death listed on his county death record is 18 October 1883. A difference of seven months and three days. The draft registration birthdate has been used in this database because he himself gave it. Joseph grew to a man of medium height and build with brown eyes and dark hair. On 17 January 1912, during the presidency of Wm. H. Taft and the 136th year of U.S.A. independence, Joseph E. Neuheisel was issued a patent for 160-acres in township 11 north of range 14 east of the Black Hills meridian in Meade County.

He was a resident of Ethan when he died, four-days after his 39th birthday, in 1922 of tuberculosis.

Biography* Josephine Neuheisel Hess, 1844-1928:
Josephine's tombstone and obituary both list her birth year as 1843. However, the Neuheisel family did not arrive in the United State until September 1844 and Josephine is not listed on the ship's passenger list. Moreover, all pieces of evidence, save one, list her birthplace as Wisconsin not Germany. This suggests that Josephine was born in 1844 - not 1843 - and that her mother was six-months pregnant when the family got off the boat. Josephine was probably born in Lyons Township, Walworth County, Wisconsin. Baptismal records of the Burlington church, where several of her later siblings were christened, do not exist prior to 1846. She married her third cousin, Jacob Hess, in 1869 at Saint Luke's in Plain, Wisconsin. Her brother, Balthasar Neuheisel, was one of the witnesses. The other witness was William Girring.

Josephine, age 83, died on a Tuesday at the home of her son-in-law, James McKune. She was survived by one son, two daughters, twenty-two grandchildren, and one brother. She was preceded in death by her husband and by six of her nine children. Her funeral was held on Thursday at Saint John's in Spring Green with the Rev. C. B. Weikmann officiating.

There are discrepancies between the county death record and the dates on Leo's tombstone. The death year on the tombstone is 1919, the same as that listed in the county burial permit. The county death record, however, lists the year of death as 1916. The age at death calculated from the birth and death dates on the tombstone is 2y9m17d. The age at death listed in the county death record is 2y9m27d.
