| Biography* | Ernest Madden, 1877-1945: Ernest was born and raised on a farm in Lynn Township, Lincoln County. His father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Wisconsin. The farm is now a part of Worthing, South Dakota. Ernest attended local schools and later the Brookings Business College. At eighteen-years-of-age, a man of medium height and build with gray eyes and dark brown hair, he enlisted in Company I of the South Dakota State Militia. This unit was later reorganized as Company D. Ernest rose from private to first sergeant. At the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, he was one of fifteen members of his company who enlisted. He was mustered into Company D, First Regiment, South Dakota Volunteers as a first sergeant and was in that unit from 25 April 1898 to 18 August 1899. The regiment was assigned duty in the Philippines and took part in a number of engagements. These included the battle in the trenches at Manila on 23 February 1899, the skirmish at San Francisco, Del Monte on 25 March 1899, and the skirmish near Polo on the following day. He was also in the battle of Marilao River on 27 March 1899 and there received a gunshot wound in the arm and chest. Soon after he was brevetted second lieutenant. After his discharge, Ernest returned to Worthing and pursued a business course at the State Agricultural College in Brookings. He entered the grain trade, forming a partnership with his father, but had to end the arrangement shortly thereafter because of poor health. He spent two-and-a-half years in the out-of-doors as a carrier on a mail route. In May 1908, he resigned the mail route and homesteaded on the lower Brule Indian Reservation in Lyman County. He resided there until his claim was proven. He returned to Worthing by 1910 and resumed his association with his father in the grain business. About the time of his return to Worthing, Ernest became active in local politics and in June of 1912 was nominated for the office of clerk of courts on the Republican ticket. He won that election in November taking office on 1 January 1913. By 1915, Ernest and wife had moved to Canton where they lived for many years at 203 West 5th Street. In 1936, they moved to Denver, Colorado. Ernest was a member of various Masonic Lodges of the Oriental Consistory in Worthing and the El Riad Shrine in Sioux Falls as well as the Odd Fellows Lodge. Ernest, age 67, died on a Wednesday at his home in Denver of a coronary thrombosis. He was survived by his wife, six daughters, and six sons.
