| Biography* | John Hornung, 1873-1943: According to both his county marriage record and his obituary, John was born in Roxbury, Dane County. According to two of his children's county birth records, he was born in Reedsburg, Sauk County. The more likely of these two birth places is Reedsburg, as John was probably born in Winfield Township, north of Reedsburg, where the family lived at the time. After his German born father died, John and his brother George went to live with his paternal grandmother, Anna Hornung. John grew to a man of medium height and medium build with black eyes and hair. He and brother George farmed in the Roxbury Township area, where he was born, for many years except for a few years spent in Sauk City, Sauk County - he is known to have lived in Sauk City from 1918-1924, at least. While he was in Sauk City, he worked as an assembler at the Wisconsin Farm Tractor Company. In 1930, he was living on a farm in Roxbury township. John was married at the Catholic Church in Roxbury by the Rev. Peter Holfletz before witnesses J. George Hornung, his brother, Julia Pulvermacher, his bride's sister?, Edward C. Pulvermacher, his bride's brother?, and Annie Kneck. Circa 1942, he sold the farm in Roxbury Township to former Wisconsin Governer Philip F. La Follette. After the sale, he lived with a daughter at 2613 Hoard Street in Madison. John died at home on a Saturday. He was survived by four daughters, two sons, five grandchildren, and one sister. Funeral services were held on Wednesday at Saint Aloysius in Sauk City with the Rev. A. J. Goetzman officiating. |
