Biography* Jacob J. Hess, 1843-1899:
Jacob Hess, a farmer, came to America alone at age 25 in 1868 arriving at the Port of New York on 13 May 1868 aboard the Hammonia. He came directly to Sauk County where there were numerous relatives. On 1 November 1872 he delared his intention to become a United States citizen in Sauk County Circuit Court. He was very involved in community affairs. Jacob served as township assessor for two years, on the county board, and was school district clerk for 21 years.

Jacob died at his home on Wilson Creek on a Tuesday. He had been ailing with bronchial trouble for about a year, but for the last four weeks suffered from grip which was the direct cause of death. He was survived by his wife, six sons, and three daughters. Funeral services were held on Friday at Saint John's in Spring Green with the Rev. J. G. Laurer delivering a very impressive sermon in German.

Biography* Jacob J. "Jake" Hess, 1911-1957:
Born on the Hess home farm in Wilson's Creek, Spring Green township, Jake was christened on 9 July 1911 at Saint John's in Spring Green and was sponsored by Joseph Needham, his father's brother, and Elizabeth Bindl Needham, his mother's sister. He was married by the Rev. Joseph Fladd at Saint Mary's Church in Richland Center. Jake was a Sauk County patrolman for many years and then farmed southwest of Plain from 1951 until 1957. In the summer of 1957 he moved to Plain and was employed by the Edward Kraemer and Sons Construction Company.

Jake died unexpectedly in a one vehicle accident returning home after performing some good neighbor chores for a sick friend. Jake Hess was survived by his wife, four sons, two daughters, four grandchildren, his mother, three brothers, and one sister. Funeral services were held on Monday at Saint Luke's in Plain.

From the Spring Green (Wisconsin) Weekly Home News, Thursday 31 January 1957 p1:
It was early Friday evening, already dark, and cold.
From the branches of a big pine tree, standing at the corner of the McKune farm yard on Old Hwy 60, needles slowly dropped over the wreckage of a truck that had nearly wrapped itself around the tree. For an hour the pine needles gently fell, while inside the house members of the Gerald McKune family sat watching television, unaware that it had shut out the sound of tragedy.
Jacob Hess, who had been on his way to do chores for a friend in the hospital, lay dead at the wheel. Mercifully, death had come to him at the moment of impact.
It was Mrs. Lloyd Radel, already beset with worries about her sick husband and the problems of running a farm in his absence, who became anxious at Mr. Hess's failure to return from a trip to town and set out to look for him after numerous telephone inquires. She had one of his daughters looking for him in Plain and had asked other people to help look for him in Spring Green.
Mrs. Radel, after futilely searching on nearby stretches of highway, came upon the accident scene shortly before 8 p.m. and got out of the car to examine the wreckage. Numb with shock at finding the body of Mr. Hess, she clung to the hope that he might still be alive and sought help at the McKune home.
The McKunes, startled at the pounding on their door, were horrified to learn of the accident that happened in their yard. An ambulance was sent for and police officers summoned.
The farm truck in which Hess died was owned by Harlow Jones, uncle of Mr. Radel. It had struck one tree on the opposite side of the road before slamming into the pine tree. The truck was demolished.
