| Biography* | Cornelius Alphonsus Haley, 1883-1963: A first generation Irish American Cornelius was born to a father born in Ireland and a mother born in Hartland, Illinois. The youngest of thirteen, Cornelius grew up on the family farm to be a tall man of stout build with blue eyes and black hair. He continued in dairy farming until 1917 when he entered the retail grocery business with his wife's brother-in-law Frank Behringer. The business was located at 112 Cass in Woodstock. The Haleys lived at 319 Judd Street in the same city. By 1920, Cornelius was employed as the manager of a bakery. In 1955, he retired and he and Martha moved to Algoma, Wisconsin where they lived at 1528 Steele Street. They belonged to Saint Mary's parish where Cornelius was a member of the Holy Name Society. Cornelius, age 80, died on a Wednesday at Algoma Memoriall hospital. He had been ill for two-months. Survivors included his wife, one daughter, four-grandchildren, three-great-grandchildren, one brother, and two sisters. Cornelius was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and seven brothers. The funeral was held on Saturday from Saint Mary's. The Right Rev. Monsignor F. C. Heimann officiated. Haucke funeral home was in charge of arrangements. |

| Biography* | Bethsaida Hammer Madden, 1896-1978: Born in Bloomington, South Dakota, Bethsaida's parents were from Kimball in Brule County, South Dakota. Bethsaida was a member of the Worthing Congregational Church and the Eastern Star at Worthing for 54 years. She was a past worthy matron and at one time state grand warden.. After her husband's death in 1946, Bethsaida worked as a secretary in the Hartley, Iowa hospital and in the admissions office of the University of Iowa Hospital. She made her home for many years with her daughter and family in Iowa City, Iowa. Later she resided in Alton, Iowa and at the Memorial Valley Nursing Home in Rock Valley. Bethsaida died on a Thursday after an extended illness. She was survived by one son, one daughter, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two sisters. Funeral services were held at the Dindot and Son Funeral Home in Lennox by the Rev. Wayne L. Rager. Services were also conducted by Worthing Chapter No. 156 of the Order of the Eastern Star. |
