Nickname Ned
Birth*c 1800 Glenfarne, Leitrim, Ireland1,2
Marriage*b 1828 Bride=Catherine Carron Clancy3
Death*7 Oct 1865 Crocknacreevy, Kinawley, Fermanagh, Ireland, Witness=Joseph Clancy1
Biography* Edward "Ned" Glancy, 1800-1865:
According to family lore, Edward was from Glenfarne, County Leitrim. This seems likely because Clancy is a common surname in County Leitrim while before 1838, when Edward's fifth child was christened in Kinawley, there were no records of any Clancys in County Fermanagh. Circa 1862, prior to Edward's death there were four Clancy families in Fermanagh, and all of them lived near the County Leitrim border. Two of these families, Laurence Clancy and Michael Glancy both lived in Inishmacsaint parish. Laurence in Drumnasreane townland; Michael in Knockarevan. A third family, Terence Clancey lived in Drumbargy, Cleenish parish. And the fourth, our Edward Glancy, lived in Crocknacreevy, Kinawley parish. There is no known connection between these four men but, sometimes, names given to children can shed some light on possible familial connections. It was customary, in those days, to name the first born male after the father's father, the second after the mother's father and the third after the father himself. Later males were named after other relatives - brothers, uncles and cousins. So, if this custom was followed, then Edward's father's name was Patrick, the name given his first born. And since later sons were named Terence and Michael, there may have been a connection between at least three of the Fermanagh Clancys mentioned above.

There is also a strong suggestion of familial connection with christening sponsors. In the case of Edward's children, a Terence Clancy was a sponsor twice, and a James Clancy once. The most likely Terence Clancy relation would be the one mentioned above living in Cleenish Parish. The most likely James Clancy relation would be one of five living in Cloonclare parish, County Leitrim. Most of the names given to Edward's sons were common among Clancys. Patrick, James, and John - names given the first three sons - were very common, Terence, Michael, and Peter - the fifth, sixth, and seventh sons - less so. Edward, however, is a very unusual given name for a Clancy. And Edward himself did not bestow that name on his third born son but his fourth. Some of these names were also common in the mother Catherine Carron's family (see her bio for a discussion of these possibilities).

It seems likely, assuming prevailing custom was followed, that Edward himself was named for someone in his mother's family. There are no clues as to what the mother's surname might have been.

Edward's wife Catherine Carron may have come from Killesher parish the next parish to the west of Kinawley. Presumably, Edward and Catherine were married in her home parish, where ever that was. They may have lived in Glenfarne after their marriage. Maybe until as late as 1838. In which case, up to four of their children may have been born in County Leitrim.

In 1862, Edward occupied "house, office, and land" in Crocknacreevy townland, leased from the Earl of Enniskillen, the immediate lessor (the property is identified as lot 16 on Ordnance Survey maps). The lot consisted of 10 acres plus one rood (one rood = 1/4 acre). The townland consisted of just over 298 acres. The buildings on the Clancy lot were valued, for tax purposes, at 10 shillings (ten shillings = 1/2 pound). There were 21 lots in the townland with buildings, nine of those were valued higher, at 15 shillings, and four others the same, i.e., at 10 shillings. The remaining seven were valued at less than 10 shillings each. The overall average was eleven. The total valuation of Edward's holding, land and buildings, was 12 pounds. The house in which the Clancy family lived had stone walls, a thatch or wood roof and three windows in the front. The interior consisted of three rooms. There were three outbuildings on the property in 1901: a cow shed, a calf shed and a piggery.

Edward died on a Saturday. His funeral was held in Kinawley - the largest held there in four years and which cost 5 pounds. According to family lore, Edward was buried in the Kinawley graveyard but there is no evidence of that. He could have been returned to Glenfarne. No tombstone has been found in either Kinawley or Glenfarne.

Biography* Edward Clancy, 1880-1954:
Edward was christened in Kinawley on the same day he was born. His sponsors were John McManus and Mary Dogan. Edward worked as a farm laborer, could read and write and was living with his mother in Crocknacreevy at age 30. He never married.

When a sow gave birth, it was customary in the region, to give the runt of the litter to a neighbor who had no pigs. One year, the Murphys, neighbors of the Clancy's, gave such a runt to Edward. Later, the parish priest organized a fund raising event which required parishoners to donate items of value for a raffle. Another neighbor, the Leonards, donated a bowl of some value as a raffle prize. Edward won the bowl in the raffle and used it as a feeding dish for the pig. The Leonards were not happy with the use to which their donated treasure had been put.

Edward died on a Friday at age 73.

He filed a Declaration of Intent to become a United States citizen in McHenry County Circuit Court in 1858. James was listed in Hartland Township in the 1860 census with real property of $1000. There was no record that he owned property in McHenry County. The property may have been in Minnesota. James was a sponsor to the christening of John McGuirk in July of 18605. He was listed in Dorr Township in the military census of 1862/3.

James was killed near Woodstock in July of 1864 and was buried in the Hartland Township cemetery. He died intestate, i.e. without a will. By Illinois law, his children inherited one-half of his estate while Catherine, his widow, inherited the other one-half. According to family lore, James went to California during the gold rush and never returned. Based on his son John's birthdate, the earliest he could have left would have been April 1863. In May 1865, his wife Catherine Nolan petitioned the McHenry County Court to be appointed guardian of her children's property. This property had been inherited by the children from their deceased father's estate. So James couldn't have just disappeared. Somewhere in this court process, someone had proof of James' death. Another problem with the gold rush story is that the rush started in 1848. And James didn't leave until fifteen years later?

On 15 September 1864, about two months after his death!, James Glancy was granted a Bounty Patent, General Land Office Warrant 98848 issued by the United States, during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, in the 89th year of U. S. independence, for 160-acres of land in Minnesota. James had been assigned this land by Elliot B. Merrick who had in turn been assigned the land by Pvt. Campbell Hudson. Hudson had acquired the warrant as bounty for service in Captain Squire's Company, Missouri Volunteers during the Osage Indian Disturbance. The land was described as the South West Quarter of Section 24 in Town 101 North of Range 22 West (Nunda Township, Freeborn County, Minnesota) in the district of lands formerly subject to sale at Chatfield, now Winnebago City, Minnesota. On the following May 15th, his widow Catherine petitioned the McHenry County Court to be appointed guardian of the property inherited by her two minor children, heirs of the deceased James. The children’s assets consisted of unspecified real property amounting to $500 in value. If the children's assets amounted to half of the estate, then we can assume that the total estate was valued at $1000. This petition was approved on the same date after she posted a $1000 bond.

Biography* Michael Clancy, 1844-1874:
The seventh of nine, Michael was christened at Kinawley on 17 July 1844. Sponsors were Cormac Carron and Anne Carron (his mother's siblings?). Michael, according to family lore, immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the USA circa 1862. He must have returned to Ireland before 1865 because he was mentioned as living at home in Peter Clancy's 1865 letter advising the brothers in the United States of their father's death. Also, a Mick Glancy of Knocknacrieve (sic) was present at the death of a 50-year-old tailor named Terence Glancy on 1 February 1869 in Clontymore, Kinawley Parish, County Fermanagh. Mick Glancy may have been our Michael Glancy. Terence Glancy may have been Michael's uncle.

Michael died at home on a Friday, several days before his 30th birthday, after a six-month illness. His death record lists the cause of death as phthisis. Am not sure what this term would have meant in 1874 Ireland but it is from a Greek word that means to waste away. If his lungs were infected, Michael probably died of TB. Brother-in-law John Leonard was present at his death.

Biography* Patrick Glancy, 1828-1885:
Patrick was the first born, of nine, from brother Edward Clancy testimony in brother John Clancy's 1918 probate file. There is no direct evidence of his birth date nor place. He may have been born in County Leitrim. Patrick left Ireland with his brother James in 1855. They sailed from Liverpool, England on the ship Enterprise and arrived at the Port of New York on the 14th of February. Patrick lived for a time in McHenry County, Illinois where he filed a Declaration of Intent to become a United States citizen in McHenry County Circuit Court in 1858, was a witness at an 1859 marriage4, was listed in the 1860 census of Hartland Township and again in the Military census of 1862/3. Sometime after his father died in 1865, and before his 1876 marriage to Ellen Martin, Patrick changed his mind about staying in America and decided to return to the home farm in County Fermanagh 5 He apparently returned at the behest of his mother because one of his brothers was 'after dying'. He and Ellen were married by P. P. Whelan (Parish Priest) before witnesses John Murphy and Margret Leonard (his sister?).

Patrick died at home on a Saturday probably of heart disease. He was about 57-years-of-age. Patrick's brother-in-law Pat Martin was the informant on his death record. Presumably, Patrick is buried in the Kinawley cemetery but there is no tombstone for him. Some of Patrick and Ellen's descendants still live in the parish.

  5. In 1901, the farm consisted of 10 acres, 1 rood plus the right to cut turf on another 2 roods (one rood is equal to one-quarter acre). There were four buildings on the property. The house had rooms with 3 windows in the front. The walls, made of stone, were in good condition, the thatch roof was in poor.

Biography* Terrence Glancy, ca1819-1869:
Terrence was the christening sponsor for two of Ned Glancy's sons; one, his namesake Terence in 1842, the other, Peter in 1847. Am not sure if this is the same Terrence or not but a Terence Clancey was subleasing a house (valued at 10 shillings) in Drumbargy townland, Cleenish parish from James Keenan in 1862.

Terrence died on a Monday of pleuritis at age 50. He had been ill for one week and Terrence's nephew Mick Glancy of Knocknacrieve (sic) was present at his death. Terrence was a widower and his occupation was that of tailor.

There was a Mary Clancy who died 06 December 1865 in Cloonatrig, Cleenish parish at age 58 (ca1807-1865). Her husband was a tailor. Could this be Terrence's deceased wife?

Mary Anne's father was born in Germany, her mother in New York. After her husband died in 1909, Mary Anne continued to live in Sauk City until circa 1942. At that time she sold her residence and moved to Roxbury to make her home with her sister. On 3 August 1915, Mrs. Mary A. Hornung of Dane County granted Lots 9 & 10 of Block 23 in Sauk City Village to Carl Henn for $1300 (Is this Mrs. George Hornung, formerly Mary Anne Gmeinder, Barbara's daughter-in-law?). In 1930, Mary Anne was living on Washington Street in Prairie du Sac township. She owned the house which was valued at $2,000. Her mother was living with her.

Mary Anne died at home on a Saturday. She was survived by two brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held on Tuesday at Saint Norbert's in Roxbury with the Rev. Herbert A. Waldkirch officiating.
