| Biography* | Raymond Clyde Gerber, 1889-1949: Often referred to, and known, by his middle name Clyde. He was a man of medium height and slender build with light brown eyes and dark brown hair. In 1910, he was living with his parents on Santa Ana Road, Highland Township, San Bernardino County, California and working in his father's orange grove. In 1914, Raymond was teaching in the Philippine Islands. In 1917, he was living in Los Angeles and studying chemistry at the University of Southern California. By 1920, Raymond had returned to San Bernardino County, California where he ran a dairy farm with his brother-in-law, John Spradling. | Biography* | Robert Gerber, 1863-1929: Robert immigrated to the United States in 1882 from his native Switzerland arriving at the port of New York 4-days before his 19th birthday on 13 July aboard the France. Also on board was another Switzerland born Gerber named Wilhelm age 28 of no known relation. Robert applied for United States citizenship which was granted in 1889. Robert farmed the northeast quarter of section 17 in Lynn Township, Lincoln County, South Dakota - about a mile south of Worthing. During 1917 and 1918, he served as a registrar for the World War I draft registration of Lincoln County board. About 1920, he and his family moved into Worthing. Robert died suddenly at his home in Worthing on a Tuesday morning of a paralytical stroke. Enjoying the best of health, he was helping load some hogs at his place in town when he fell to the ground and died instantly. He was survived by his wife and daughter. Funeral services were held on Thursday from his home and the Congregational church. |
