Biography* Helen F. Gerber McCarthy, 1911-2004:
Helen was christened in December 1911 at Saint Edward's in Worthing, South Dakota. Her sponsors were her first cousin Georgia Snyder Devitt and Georgia's husband Frank. Raised in Worthing, Helen attended local elementary school. After grade school, she commuted weekly to Sioux Falls with her mother and sister where she attended Cathedral High School.

In her sophomore year, Helen flunked Algebra (not her favorite - or best - subject). She was terrified to tell her mother. The reaction of mother must not have been too severe, Helen doesn't remember it! Helen greatly admired her high school Latin teacher, Margaret McNamara. Margaret was a graduate of Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. And so, after graduating high school, Helen attended Clarke College also, graduating in 1933.

After college, Helen taught 5th grade for the 1933/34 school year in New Albin, Iowa. Her salary was $50/month. Room and board cost $30/month. She did not have a car nor did she need one. In May of 1934, her father died. She was released from her contract with New Albin and returned home to Worthing. She remained there for the next two years, teaching history at the Worthing high shool. Helen was related to some of her students. She also taught Dorothy Warsing how to play the piano using a paper keyboard. Dorothy later rewarded her teacher by playing the real piano at Helen's wedding.

Biography* Henry F. Gerber, 1870-1934:
Henry and his twin brother, "Fred Jr", were christened together at Keyesville - a mission of Saint Luke's parish in the village of Plain in Sauk County, Wisconsin on 11 June 1870 by the Rev. Theophilus Beau. Conrad Zilg and Maria Neuheisel, Augusta's sister, sponsored both children. "Fred Jr" is listed first in the register. This is the only evidence that Henry might be the younger of the two. Henry grew to 5 feet 4 inches in height, with dark complexion, large dark grey eyes, and dark hair. In 1894, Henry F. and and his twin brother, Fred, bought a 160-acre farm a mile northwest of Worthing. He was a farmer until 16 November 1907, when he became a rural mail carrier. He carried the mail on Route 2 out of Worthing until his death.

His daughters remebered him as a kind and gentle man who shunned confrontation and never raised his voice. Henry was born left-handed but was forced by teachers to write with his right hand. He had an aptitude for arithmetic. Henry loved sports. One Thanksgiving, Henry and a priest from Worthing went to Sioux Falls to watch a football game. After the game, they were hungry so they stopped and ate at a restaurant. Needless to say, when Henry got home he was too full to eat the dinner that Mary Clancy had prepared. Mary was not happy. Henry's first sports love was baseball. He would travel to Sioux Falls, a distance of some 16-miles, to get the latest scores posted outside the Argus-Leader newpaper offices.

On 25 April 1898, at the age of 27, Henry enrolled in the U.S. Army to serve during the Spanish-American war for up to two years. On the same day, he was mustered into the 1st Infantry Regiment of the South Dakota Volunteers as a Sargent and assigned to Company D. He was mustered out at the Presidio in San Francisco, California on 5 October 1899 as a 1st Sargent. Henry served as Sargent from 25 April 1898 to 10 September 1899 and as 1st Sergent from 11 September 1899 to 5 October 1899. List of battles, engagements, skirmishes, expeditions: Spanish American War in the Phillipines, 1898; Filippino Insurrection, 1899.

Detailed list of engagements: Trenches near Manila, February 23; San Francisco del Monte, March 25; Mayuemayan (??), March 26; Marilao, March 27; Santa Maria River, March 29; Guiguireto, March 29; Santa Isabel, March 30; Malolos, March 31; Pulilan, 1st trench, April 24; Pulilan, 2nd trench, April 24; Columfrit, April 25; San Torrias, May 4; repulse of enemy's attack, May 25; Turning, movement, Fernando, May 26.

Henry returned home after the war and resumed farming with brother Fred. In 1900, he was living with his brother George. After his marriage, he lived on the farm in Lynn Township until 1915. On 29 March of that year, Henry purchased a house and lot on Poplar Street in Worthing5 from John and Irena Huseboe of Carson, South Dakota for $1500.

When Henry had completed his 25th year of service on the rural mail route in Worthing, wife Mary entertained the postoffice force at a surprise dinner to celebrate the event. When Henry started carrying mail, he used a team of horses and it took him nearly all day to make the route of 28 miles. There were few roads then and it was necessary to cut through fields. The winters were also more severe [Note: The winters were always 'worse' back then weren't they?] making it a much harder trip. The route is 27 miles today and takes about two and a half to three hours when the roads are good. There are but five miles of graveled road on the present route.

Henry died at his home in Worthing on a Friday. He had been a member of I.O.O.F. Lodge of Worthing for 41 years, and also a member of Beaver Rebekah Lodge of Worthing and of Jonas H. Lein Camp No. 5, United Spanish War Veterans. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, his twin brother and one sister. Funeral services were held on Monday from Saint Edward's Catholic church. Monsignor Monahan of Beresford and Rev. Costello of Worthing officiated. Burial was in the Worthing cemetery where military services were conducted by the local American Legion Post. Three Spanish-American War veterans and three World War veterans acted as pallbearers.

At the time of his death, Henry owned a half-interest in 320 acres in section 5, plus 160 acres in section 3 both in Lynn Township in Lincoln County, plus a half-interest in 160 acres in section 8 and 160 acres in section 5 both in Town 12/Range 23 North in Dewey County, South Dakota plus a house & lot in the Town of Worthing in Lincoln County. Also, Henry, together with wife Mary and twin brother Fred, were responsible for a $17,000 mortgage with interest at 5.5% held by The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. He was owed unpaid salary of $1,036.39 as a Rural Mail Carrier. In addition, he was heir to one-seventh of the estate of his father. Total value of his father's estate was $18,852.39.

On 20 March 1935, his widow Mary petitioned the probate court that personal property of an old Model T automobile worth $5 and cash-on-hand of $745 be exempted from Henry's estate. She furthur requested an allowance, out of estate, of $25/month for 'maintenance of family.' This was approved for one year from 25 May 1934. Also on 20 March, Mary petitioned for the use of the homestead by the family. approved 20 March 1935. On 4 May 1935, Mary filed a claim against the estate in the amount of $3,400 plus interest for two loans that she made to Henry F. & "Fred Jr".

A special account of the estate and a request for partial distribution dated 5 August 1937: listed the value of the estate at $19,403.25 less charges of $1,633.25; requested that the homestead be exempted from claims; stated that 'most' of the farm lands in the estate have been foreclosed or are unsaleable; stated that the one-eighth interest in the unsettled estate of Fred Gerber Sr consisted of lots in the town of Worthing; and listed a claim of Henry Bradshaw of Worthing against estate in the amount of $21,165.85. approved 10 August 1937.

In a petition for final discharge dated 24 September 1940 it was stated that the real estate in Lincoln County was mortgaged for more than its worth and was lost by foreclosure; that the administrator of the estate of "Fred Sr" failed to protect the property in the estate from the lien of taxes; and that the money in the Worthing bank was lost by the insolvency of the bank so that the one-eighth interest in the "Fred Sr" estate was of no value; and that the land in Dewey County is worth less than the taxes owed. The petition was approved on 24 September 1940.
