| Biography* | Bernice Behringer Gustie, 1911-1999: On Monday, 4 October 1931, voting began in Waukegan, Illinois to pick the most popular girl in the Waukegan-North Chicago area. The contest was sponsored and promoted by the Waukegan News-Sun in conjunction with 25 area merchants. Nominations closed on 10 October and voting ended six weeks later on Saturday, 14 November. The winner would receive an all expense paid 2-week trip to the Bermuda Islands on a Furness-Bermuda liner. On Sunday, the 16th of November, the newspaper announced the winner - Miss Lillian Hendrickson. The next day, the newspaper had to announce that a mistake had been made (oops!). Only 24 of the 25 boxes of ballots had been counted. When ballots in the mislaid box were counted, Bernice Behringer vaulted into the lead, claiming first place by a comfortable margin. The sponsors solved their sticky problem by sending both girls to Bermuda. At the time of the contest, Bernice was living at her parent's home at 702 Grove Street and had been employed by F. W. Woolworth & Company for two years. A year later, Bernice was married by her pastor Joseph F. Cussen. After the honeymoon she and her new husband lived at 517 Lorraine Avenue. Circa 1945, the family moved to California. And within a year, Bernice and family had settled in San Pedro. The photograph was taken in 1933 and includes first cousins Jeanette, Bernice, and Marion Behringer, Helen Gerber, and Darlene Haley. |

| Biography* | Frank Behringer, 1884-1931: Born to a German born father and an Ohio born mother, Frank grew to a man of medium height, with slender build, gray eyes, and dark brown hair. He left home in Celina, Ohio for Harvard, Illinois in 1902 where he worked for the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company at the Harvard depot in various positions . After his marriage to Susan Clancy, Frank and his wife were living her foster parents, Michael and Mary O'Brien, at 407 West Blackman in Harvard's 1st Ward. In 1917, he entered a retail grocery business in partnership with his wife's brother-in-law, Cornelius Haley. The business was located at 112 Cass in Woodstock and the family lived at 468 Jackson. In 1920, he moved to Waukegan, Illinois in the employ of the Illinois Bell Telephone Company as an adjuster and collector. Frank was the Financial Secretary of the Waukegan Lodge of Knights of Columbus and a member of Saint Anastasia's Catholic Church. Frank collapsed at his home at 702 Grove Street in Waukegan on a Monday. Members of the central fire station inhalator squad were not able to revive him. Dr. George H. Callahan pronounced him dead at the scene. Coroner John L. Taylor later ruled that death was due to heart failure. Frank had never suffered from heart trouble. He was survived by his wife, two sons, three daughters. His funeral was held on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from Saint Anastasia's with the Rev. A. J. Fleming officiating. The Knights of Columbus and the White and Tobin funeral home were in charge of arrangements. Frank had recently been appointed by Mayor Peter W. Peterson to serve as a member of the Waukegan police pension fund board. At the time of his death, he had yet to attend a meeting. |
