Biography* Gottfried J. "Godfrey" "Ole" Gerber, 1879-1951:
In 1879 or 1880, Godfrey's father "John" left the family in their native Switzerland and came, with the father's brother Otto, to the United States. In 1881, uncle Otto returned to Switzerland and brought Godfrey, his mother and siblings to be reunited with the father. Godfrey attended local schools in Lennox and grew to be a man of short height and slender build, with blue eyes and dark hair. To people familiar with him, he was known as "Ole". His wife Martha died in 1919 and Godfrey was left to raise their two-year-old son. Sometime in late 1920, he gave up farming and moved into Lennox where he was employed as a clerk. At one time he was a member of the Lennox municipal band.

Godfrey died on a Thursday from a heart attack at age 71. He had just left the post office and was entering his automobile when the attack occurred. Godfrey was survived by his son, a sister, and a brother. Funeral services were held on Monday from the Dindot & Son funeral home and then from the Second Reformed church with the Rev. R. Denekas, pastor, officiating.

Biography* Gottlieb Gerber, 1837-1914:
Gottlieb was christened in Aarwangen on 15 October 1837. Both his parents died while he was a teenager, his father in 1851, his mother in 1853. Gottlieb left his native Switzerland in 1855 at the age of 17, arriving in the Port of New York on the 23rd of April aboard the steamship Confederation with 755 other passengers including 2 older brothers, Samuel and Friedrich. He settled first in Sauk County, Wisconsin with his brothers. By early 1859 the spirit of adventure moved Gottlieb to try the mountain state of Colorado. He spent that winter in Seneca, Kansas returning to Colorado the following spring. For a year Gottlieb engaged in agricultural pursuits on a farm 30-miles southwest of Denver. From then until 1868, he conducted a general merchandising business in Oro City, Colorado while at the same time he operated a ranch. Gottlieb returned to Spring Green, Wisconsin where he partnered with brother Friedrich in a grocery and dry goods business. In September 1869, he married Mary Ann Schoenmann.

In 1871, Gottlieb came to Lincoln County, Dakota Territory and established a 160-acre homestead on Section 3 of Lynn Township, about two miles east of what is now Worthing, South Dakota. The following year, he brought his family out from Spring Green. Later, Gottlieb acquired another 160-acres in Section 2 of Grant Township. When the village of Worthing was laid out and platted, he erected the first house in town and became one of its first business men, keeping the post-office in his store for many years. In 1895, Gottlieb erected a two story business building. Besides his general merchandise business, he continued to supervise the operation of the farms, which totaled 480-acres by this time. Gottlieb belonged to the I.O.O.F. lodge of Worthing. A public spirited man, he served many terms on the village board of supervisors including that of chairman. He was also an active member of the Worthing school board. About 1902, Gottlieb moved to California with his family. There he owned a mortgaged orange grove in Highland township. Later, he established a paint and oil business.

Gottlieb died at his home of lung trouble on a Wednesday evening. He was 77-years-of-age. Gottlieb had been ill for several months. He was predeceased by one daughter and survived by his wife, three sons and three daughters. The funeral was held on Friday from the Cortner Bros. Chapel in Redlands with the Rev. D. M. Kirkpatrick officiating.

Biography* Grace Gerber Sherman, 1897-1981:
Born in Lynn Township, Grace grew up there and later in La Valley Township. She graduated from All Saints High School in Sioux Falls and later from Madison Normal College. Grace was employed as a teacher and continued to live in La Valley until her marriage. She was a member of the Congregational church. After her marriage, Grace and her husband farmed near Lennox in Lincoln County, South Dakota. They retired to Lennox in 1966 and her husband died in 1971. Grace entered the Mom and Dad's Nursing Home, Sioux Falls in 1979.

She died on a Wednesday at age 83. Grace was survived by three daughters, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two brothers, and one sister. Funeral services were held at the Dindot and Son Funeral Home, Lennox on Saturday.
