Biography* Frederick "Fred Jr" Gerber, 1870-1941:
Fred Jr and his twin brother, Henry, were christened together at Keyesville - a mission of Saint Luke's parish in the village of Plain in Sauk County, Wisconsin on 11 June 1870 by the Rev. Theophilus Beau. Conrad Zilg and Maria Neuheisel, their mother's sister, sponsored both children. Fred Jr is listed first in the register. This is the only evidence that he might be the older of the two.

Fred, and twin brother Henry, bought 160-acres in Section 5 of Lynn Township, Lincoln County4 from their parents on 17 August 1891 for $1000. On 28 February 1894, the twins bought another 160-acres in Section 5 of Lynn Township5 from Thomas J. and Sarah P. Leavitt for $4500 and assumed an existing mortgage in the amount of $1500. On 24 June 1912, Fred was issued a patent for 140.9-acres, described as lots 3 and 4 and the southeast quarter of the northwest quarter of section 5 in township 12 north of range 23 east of the Black Hills meridian in Dewey County, South Dakota. The certificate was registered at the Timber Lake, South Dakota land office and the patent was issued during the presidency of William H. Taft, in the 136-year of Untied States independence. On 1 August 1918, the twins bought a one-third interest in the South West quarter of Section Three in Lynn Township for $6,000 from Edward Clancy, now known as Edward Clancy Davis6.

In the fall of 1918, Fred entered politics. He ran for state representative of Lincoln County on the Republican ticket. Two Republicans and two Democrats vied for the two seats available. Fred won easily garnering about 75% of the vote. The other Republican was not far behind. Fred recieved 1262 votes. His Republican running mate Rogness received 1209. Their Democrat opponents, Groeneveld and Strom, garnered 527 and 439 respectively. 7 Fred served for four years, 1919-1922. His biography in the Biographical Directory of the South Dakota Legislature, 1889-1989 mentions that Fred attended Augustana College in Canton and operated an automobile business in Worthing. It also contends that he died in Lincoln County on 10 June 1926 but that was his father!8. On 9 June 1919, the twins bought the last one-third interest in the South West quarter of Section Three in Township Ninety-Eight Range Fifty from Frank T. and Gussie Clark for $12,000.9 Frank Clark bought this parcel for $9,800 from John and Isabelle Clancy, of Chicago, on 31 May 1919 - a $2,200 profit in nine days!

Fred, who never married, was living in Worthing with brother George in 1900. Some time later he lived with twin brother Henry, first in Lynn Township and later on Poplar Street in Worthing. By 1934, Fred was living on his homestead in Lantry, Dewey County, South Dakota.

Fred Gerber died on a Tuesday, thirteen days after his 71st brithday, at McKennan hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota after an illness of four days. Funeral services were held on Friday from the Worthing Congregational church.

Biography* Friedrich "Fred Sr" Gerber, 1834-1926:
The seventh of nine, Friedrich was christened on 25 March 1834. His father died in 1851 and his mother in 1853. In 1855, Friedrich immigrated to America, arriving at the Port of New York on 23 April 1855 aboard the steamship Confederation. The ship, weighing 1182+ tons, arrived with 756 passengers including four other Gerbers from Switzerland, two of whom were Fred's brothers, Samuel and Gottlieb.

Fred located in Troy Township (Harrisburgh P.O.) in Sauk County, Wisconsin where he owned and operated a farm. Almost immediately, he took the first step toward becoming a United States citizen. He filed a "Declaration of Intention to Become a Citizen" in County Court of Sauk County at Baraboo, Wisconsin on 25 May 1855.5

By 1860, the farm was worth $600. Sometime after 1860, Fred moved to Spring Green, Wisconsin (also in Sauk County) where he operated a retail grocery and dry goods business in partnership with his brother Gottlieb. In 1868, the Gerber Brothers obtained ownership of the business establishment of G. F. Pound and operated on that location for two years. By 1870, Fred's real estate was worth $6000 and his personal estate another $1200.6

In 1872, Fred, his wife Augusta, and their six children moved to the Dakota Territory and homesteaded a quarter section in Lynn Township, Lincoln County. The northern part of this homestead later became part of what is now Worthing, South Dakota. He lived in this area the rest of his life, engaging in farming until the railroad came through. In Worthing, the Security Bank building, the Enterprise newspaper building, and several buildings north and east of them were built on his old homestead. On 18 November 1879, Fred and Augustina sold a 350-foot-wide right-of-way across their land in the South West quarter of Section Four in Lynn Township to the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway Company for $1 and the location of a depot.7 He signed the deed "Fred Gerber" and Augusta marked it. On 21 November 1879, Fred, Augustina, their daughter Mary Madden, and their son-in-law James Madden registered a plat map for an annex to the village of Worthing which was laid out on land that they owned. The annex was laid out on the South-Half of the South West quarter of Section Five (Fred and Augusta's land) and the North-Half of the North West Quarter of Section Nine (James and Mary Madden land). The plat identified numbered blocks and lots with dimensions, plus named streets and unnamed alleys with locations and widths.8 On 8 March 1880, Fred and Augustina sold 6 lots in block 2 of Worthing plus one-half of the south-half of the South West quarter of Section Four in Lynn Township except for - those surveyed and platted parts of Worthing not conveyed above and except for the depot grounds and except for the right-of-way belonging to the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway Company. These properties were sold to John Lawler of Crawford County, Wisconsin for $1.9 He signed the deed "Fredrich Gerber" and Augusta marked it.

On 30 April 1880, Fred was issued a patent (Homestead Certificate 2822, Application 3896) from the United States government, under the 1862 Act to secure homesteads of settlers on public lands, for the South West quarter in Section Four of Lynn Township which he had homesteaded.10 Rutherford B. Hayes was President of the USA on the date of issue. On 24 January 1882, Fred deposited $200 with the Land Office in Yankton, Dakota Territory as payment in full for 160-acres in Section Two of Grant Township, Lincoln County (Receipt No. 1558).11 On 22 May 1882, Fred bought Lots One and Two in Block Five in the Village of Worthing from James and Mary Madden (his son-in-law and daughter) for $1.12 On 25 January 1890, Fred purchased 158 acres in Section 5 of Lynn Township13 from Gudmund and Lisa Skartaedt for $1300 plus he assumed three mortgages totaling $800.

On 17 August 1891, Fred and Augusta sold 160-acres in Section 5 of Lynn Township, Lincoln County14 to sons Fred and Henry for $1000. He signed the deed "Fred Gerber" and Augusta marked it. In February 1892, Fred and Augusta sold 160-acres in Section Two of Grant Township to Paul Ysbrands for $2500.15 He signed the deed "Fred Gerber" and Augusta marked it. On 30 June 1894, Fred was issued a patent (Certificate No. 1558) from the United States government for the 160-acres in Section Two of Grant Township which he had purchased under the 1820 Act governing the sale of public lands.16 Chester A. Arthur was President of the USA on the date of issue. On 18 September 1897, Fred and Augusta sold a 100-foot (E-W) by 26-foot (N-S) lot on the North East corner of Main & 1st Streets in Worthing to the Columbus Lodge No. 122 of I.O.O.F. of Worthing for $300.17 On 15 August 1908, Fred sold Lots One and Two in Block Five in the Village of Worthing to daughter Clara Swartz (sic) for $1 and other valuable considerations.18 He signed the deed "Fred Gerber Sr". On 17 October 1923, Fred sold the north-half of the South West Quarter and all that portion of the south-half of the South West quarter lying north of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway right-of-way all in Section Four of Lynn Township to daughter Clara Gerber Schwartz for $1, love and affection.19 He signed the deed "Fred Gerber Sr".

The first grain buyer in Worthing, Fred bought grain for the Hunting Elevator Company. Later he organized the Worthing Elevator Company and acted as their buyer. Later still, he took a contract and built a half mile of grade when the railroad came through. Fred was elected County Commissioner in 1889 for the third time. He was a Commissioner a total of 12 years. He also served as Post Master of Worthing for 4 years. Fred was a member of the Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge and the Rebekah Lodge from the time of their formation in Worthing. He was a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge for four years and belonged to I.O.O.F. for 33 years.

Fred died on a Thursday at the home of his daughter, Clara (Mrs. Irvon) Schwartz. He was survived by two daughters, two sons, 24 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. His wife, two daughters and one son preceded him in death. His funeral was held on Sunday at the Congregational Church under the auspices of the I.O.O.F Lodge of Worthing.
