| Biography* | Louis Frey, 1870-1950: A first generation American born to German parents, Louis moved to Rockford, Illinois about 1901. Sometime after his marriage in Rockford, and probably after the birth of his first son, Louis moved his family to Madison, Wisconsin. There he was employed in a boiler factory. According to family lore, Louis had an altercation with his boss at the factory, and assaulted the man with a ballpeen hammer. Fearing retribution, or maybe prosecution for assault or even murder, Louis fled with his family back to Rockford. Years later, Louis related the story of the altercation to a neighbor. At the time, Louis is alleged to have commented that the attack "cooled him (the boss) off." About 1917, the family moved to Rusk County, Wisconsin. In 1920, the family was living at 921 E. 4th in Ladysmith. By 1930, they had moved onto a dairy farm in Dewey township that Louis owned and operated. Louis died on a Sunday at the home of his son of heart failure. He had been in poor health for 18 months with hardening of the arteries. He was survived by his wife, two sons, one brother, and two sisters. Three brothers preceded him in death. Louis' funeral was held on Wednesday from Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic church. Burial arrangements were made by the McElravey funeral home of Ladysmith. |
