| Biography* | James Farmer, 1872-1963: That the James Farmer born in Carricknaseer is our James Farmer is not a sure thing. The father in the birth record is listed as Thomas. The following describes the tenuous threads. In 1901, there is a James Farmer, born 1874, listed in Drumharrif, Cleenish parish with his father Thomas. The mother is not listed but there is a visitor named John Woods in the house, age 25. The house is rated 2nd class, with stone walls, a thatch roof, 4 rooms, and 3 windows in front. There are 5 out-buildings, the landlord is Wm. J. Brown. In 1911, there is a James Farmer, born 1871, a herder that cannot read in Gortatole, Cleenish parish. Also in the house is a widow relative Catherine Leonard age 76. No father is listed but there is a servant named John Woods in the house, age 46. The house is rated 2nd class, with stone walls, a thatch roof, 4 rooms, and 3 windows in front. There are 5 out-buildings, the landlord is Hugh Green. Carricknaseer and Gortatole are long narrow townlands that abut on their long sides. Drumharriff is a few townlands away to the east. That the James Farmer in 1901 is the same James Farmer as in 1911 seems likely. This James father's name was Thomas. So is he the same James as the one born in Carricknaseer? James Farmer had an "interest" in the Abocurragh farm before his mother-in-law died in 1912. Soon after she died, JAmes purchased the farm from the landlord Hen. G. Archdall. On 26 January 1949, he transferred the property to his daughter Mary Kate Rutledge of Letterbreen in consideration of natural love and affection (he was living with her and her husband John Rutledge). Then, on 13 March 1962, he revoked the transfer and registered himself as owner. He subsequently willed the property to his son Patrick. When his wife Mary Anne died in 1952, they were living with son Patrick in Ballintogher, County Sligo. Circa 1957, he returned to Enniskillen. He was listed as a retired railroad employee in his wife's death cert. |
