Biography*

Balthasar Embser, 1819-1871:
Balthasar immigrated to the United States in the early 1850s. According to family lore, his first wife, Margaretha Thomas, died and Balthasar married her sister Cathrine. So far we have found no evidence - on either side of the Atlantic Ocean -of either the first wife's death nor the second marriage. In 1860, Balthasar, his second wife, his one daughter born in Jagersburg of his first wife, and two daughters born in Pennsylvania, are living in Blythe township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Balthasar is working as a coal miner. He does not own any real estate property but has a personal estate of $50. In 1870, the family is living in Schuylkill township North. A two year old son has been added and Balthasar has $500 worth of real estate and an additional personal estate of $200.

Balthasar died on a Saturday at age 51.

Catharina Embser Walzer, 1817-????:
Catharina immigrated to the United States with her husband and three sons after the death of her stillborn daughter in Febuary 1846. Catharina bore two addiional daughters in Pennsylvania. In the 1850 census, she was living with the five children, all under the age of 13, in Norwegian township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Catharina's husband apprently died during the 15-months prior to the census. Have found no other evidence of Catharina or of the two Pennsylvania born daughters. There is a clue that at least one of the daughters was living in the county in 1897. When Catharina's son John died in St Louis, Missouri, his obit requested that Pottsville, Pennsylvania papers copy the obit. This suggests that, maybe, one of his sisters was still living there.
