Biography* Nicholas English, 1839-1907:
Born in Glenbane, County Tipperary, Nicholas moved to 2 East Beach, Cobh, County Cork by 1864 where he operated a very successful business as a victualler or butcher supplying meat and other provisions to English ships which entered Cork Harbour. Nicholas married twice and fathered 17-children. In 1901, the house the family occupied on East Beach was made of stone with a tile roof. It contained 17 rooms and had 10 windows in the front. There were eleven people in the house including Nicholas, his wife, six children, an apprentice (nephew William Kirby), a clerk and a servant. Everbody in the house spoke Irish. There were ninteen other houses on the street inhabited by 26 families consisting of 130-indiviuals. A 21st house, the harbour office, was unoccupied.

Nicholas died at home on a Saturday at age 68 of moist gangrene of the foot and septic poisoning. Bridget Burke of 22 Bishop Street was the informant on the death cert. According to family lore he removed an ingrown toenail and it became infected.

Nicholas was christened on 09 January 1870 by the Rev. H. Dennehy with sponsors Richard Walsh and Jane Sheehan. There is no civil birth record for Nicholas. In 1889, Nicholas was an apprentice crew member aboard the ship "RIMAC". While at sea, the ship was reported missing on 22 June 1889. Nicholas and the rest of the crew were presumed to have drowned.

Biography* Patrick Desmond English, 1887-1918:
Patrick was born in the family home at 2 East Beach in Cobh. When he grew up, he was a veterinary in Tubercurry, County Sligo and a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS).

Patrick died on a Thursday during the global flu epidemic of 1918. He had contracted influenza 14 days earlier. A week later Patrick developed acute lombar pneumonia and after another week experienced cardiac failure. Patrick was 31. He was survived by his wife who was two-months pregnant. Patrick's daughter Geraldine was born seven-months after his death.

Biography* Emily Fitzgerald English, 1854-1914:
According to family lore, Emily eloped to be married at age 18. If this be true, she was married again at a church in her hometown at age 19, 38-days short of her 20th birthday. She was a resident of the Beach, Queenstown at the time. Her picture was lifted from a family photo taken at the rear of the family home circa 1895. The photo includes Emily's seven youngest and her mother Ellen Coleman.

Emily, a widow, died at her home, 2 East Beach, Cobh, on a Thursday at age 59. The cause of death was malignant disease of colon which she had endured for two months. An obstruction developed three days before her death.
