| Biography* | Joseph Francis English, 1877-1946: Born and raised at East Beach in Cobh, Joseph aspired from an early age to become a Cathoilc Priest. He grew to be a man 5-feet/6-inches tall, of stout build, with pale complexion, brown hair, brown eyes, and no visible marks. Joseph was ordained in Rome, Italy on 18 June 1905 and was assigned to Saint Agnes Parish at 1933 Sidney Street in Saint Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. He had immigrated to the United States before his ordination and became a citizen on 26 September 1906 in Saint Louis Circuit Court, Division 12. Joseph's Application for Final Papers was witnessed by John S. Leahy and Edmund A. Casey. By 1909, he had been assigned to Saint James Parish at 1368 Tamm Avenue in Saint louis. On February 3, 1911 Joseph organized Epiphany parish, as a mission of St. James. He remained pastor until his death in 1946. The church was located in a storefront at Ivanhoe & Arloe Station but soon was moved to a frame building in the 6700 block of Scanlan between Ivanhoe & Bradley. The rectory was located at 6475 Ivanhoe. The present church, at 6596 Smiley Avenue, was dedicated on 14 September 1930. The new rectory was located at 6576 Smiley Avenue. In 1913, Joseph made a trip to Cobh and brought his sister Eileen back to the States on the "Adriatic" arriving in the Port of New York on 22 November 1913. The voyage took eight days. Eileen lived with Joseph and acted as his housekeeper until her marriage in 1919. In 1918, Joseph registered for the WWI draft. By 1920, his niece Violette Lewis was living in the rectory and working as a saleslady in a dry goods store. Joseph's sister Addie Coleman was vociferously opposed to this arrangement with its appearance of impropriety. Joseph died in hospital an a Wednesday 5-days before his 69th birthday. The cause was myocardial exhaustion, apoplexy. Daniel L Sexton, 607 N Grand was the attending physician. Joseph was survived by four sisters. His funeral was held on Saturday from Epiphany. | Biography* | Margaret "Maggie" English Morrissey, 1864-1934: Maggie was christened by the Rev. S. Ashlin with sponsors James Sheehan and Mary Sheehan. She fell as a child injuring her back and as a result of the injury had a humped back. According to family lore, Maggie's father had "to pay" Sea Captain Michael Morrissey to marry her because of the hump-back. Also it supposedly was the custom that Maggie's younger sisters couldn't marry before she herself did. Maggie was 26-years-old when she married. Sometimes Maggie accompanied her husband on his voyages even after their daughter was born. On one of these trips the child became sick and died at sea. At least one voyage included a stop in San Francisco, California where Maggie entered the United States for the first time. After her husband died, Maggie moved permanently to America. She entered through the Port of New York on 25 July 1921 having left Queenstown as a 2nd class cabin passenger aboard the SS Baltic mastered by F. B. Howarth. Maggie was listed as a widow, age 48, occupation housekeeper, born in, and a resident of, Queenstown. Edward English of East Beach, Queenstown was listed as her contact in Ireland. Maggie was bound for Saint Louis to meet her brother the Rev Joseph English of Epiphany church rectory and her sister Adelaide Coleman of 224 South Newstead Avenue. She was ticketed to her final destination, paid for by herself, and carried $650. Maggie was deemed to be of good mental and physical health but carried a medical certificate of senility. She was 5-feet tall with fair complexion, grey hair, and blue eyes. In 1930 she was living with her sister Adelaide on 4918 Forest Park Blvd. Maggie, 65, died at home on a Friday. The cause was embolus of the coronary artery of the heart, arterio sclerosis, and senility. Dr. Arthur M Thompson, Suite 401 Humbolt Building was the attending physician. The funeral was held on Monday was conducted by her priest brother from Epiphany church, Smiley and Ivanhoe Avenues. Arthur J. Donnelly funeral home, 3840 Lindell Blvd was in charge. |
