Biography* Adelaide English Coleman, 1881-1963:
Born in the family home at 1 East Beach in Cobh, County Cork, Adelaide was christened on 8 January 1882 at Saint Colman's Cathedral in Cobh by the Rev. J. Barry. She was sponsored by her uncle Edward Fitzgerald and her aunt Elizabeth Fitzgerald, both of whom were her mother's siblings. Adelaide was born into a very large, well-to-do merchant family. She was the 11th of the 17 children sired by her father and his two wives. While growing up, Adelaide enjoyed all the advantages of her family's social and economic position. In this place and time that meant education in music, the arts and literature including schooling abroad.

In 1908, Adelaide married Christopher Coleman, a publican. Chistopher and his occupation were considered beneath her standing. Adelaide's family was not pleased. After her husband enlisted in the British Army, Adelaide registered for a six-month mid-wifery course at Rotunda Hospital in Dublin. The army provided assistance to families whose primary breadwinner was in the service of the King. The two youngest children were placed in the orphanage at Rushbrooke where they remained until the family left for America. Adelaide entered the mid-wifery program on 12 November 1914 and received her certificate on 10 May 1915. Upon gaining her cert Adelaide was employed in private nursing at 52 Richmond Place, Dublin.

When her husband was killed in 1916, Adelaide's problem of supporting herself and her three babies became more acute. She had taken Red Cross courses in England during the Great War but still did not have a nursing certificate. The outlook for employment in Ireland at that time was bleak for a woman. Especially for one with three children to raise. Both her parents were dead. Her brother Joseph, Pastor of Epiphany parish in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA offered her a position as his houskeeper. She also had a younger sister living in the Saint Louis area.

So, almost three years to the day after her husband died, Adelaide and her three young daughters, ages seven, five and three, crossed the street from their East Beach home in Cobh, County Cork and boarded a ship for Liverpool. There on 2 September 1919 they boarded the SS Minnedosa 6 bound for the Americas. The ship crossed the Atlantic Ocean and sailed into the Saint Lawrence Seaway stopping at Quebec City in Canada. Here Adelaide and her daughters debarked because of Adelaide's great devotion to Sainte Anne de Beaupré. She had decided to visit the great basilica named for the saint located about twenty miles east of Quebec . She and the girls then boarded a train on the Central and Pacific Railroad and entered the United States at Detroit, Michigan on the 11th of September in 1919.

When they arrived in Saint Louis, Adelaide and daughter Emily lived with a friend (name unknown). Daughters Gerry and Addie stayed at either the Ursuline Academy on 16th and Locust, or at the Mercy Convent on Laclede Station Road. This arrangement continued for about a year. A nun, Sister Bonaventure, was able to obtain a nursing position for Adelaide at Saint John's hospital. There she eventually rose to the position of Night Supervisor. She returned to Ireland on at least one occasion and also entered Canada at least once on holiday. Adelaide never became a United States citizen although all three of her daughters did.

Adelaide died on a Friday at age 81. She was survived by her three daughters, and two sisters. Her funeral was held Monday from the Cathedral of St. Louis. Arthur J. Donnelly Parlors, 3840 Lindell Blvd., was in charge of arrangements.

  6. The Minnedosa was ordered by the Hamburg America Line in 1913, but was taken over by Canadian Pacific before completion. She was built by Barclay, Curle & Co Lts, Glasgow (engines by Harland & Wolff, Belfast) and was a 13,972 gross ton vessel, length 520 feet x beam 67.2 feet, two funnels, two masts, triple screw and a speed of 15 knots. There was accommodation for 550-cabin and 1,200-3rd class passengers. Although her keel was laid in 1913, she was not launched until 17/10/1917 and on 2/5/1918 was towed to Belfast to have her engines fitted. On 5/12/1918 she commenced her maiden voyage from Liverpool to St John, NB and on 13/12/1919 started a single round voyage from the UK to Bombay for the British government. On 21/6/1922 she commenced her first voyage from Antwerp to Southampton, Quebec and Montreal and in 1925 was refitted by Hawthorn, Leslie & Co Ltd, Hebburn-on-Tyne and her tonnage increased to 15,186 tons. In June 1926 she had accommodation for 206-cabin, 545-tourist and 590-3rd class passengers. She commenced her last Antwerp - Southampton - St John NB - Liverpool voyage on 30/3/1927 and was transferred to the Liverpool - Quebec - Montreal route on 29/4/1927. On 27/6/1931 she started her last transatlantic crossing from Glasgow to Quebec and Montreal (129 Atlantic round voyages) and was then laid up in the River Clyde. In April 1935 she was sold for scrapping and was towed to Savona, Italy, but was bought by Italia Line, renamed Piemonte and used as a troopship. On 15/8/1943 she was scuttled at Messina, salvaged in 1949 and towed to Spezia and scrapped. [North Atlantic Seaway by N. R. P.
