| Biography* | Michael Christopher Coleman, 1882-1916: The second child and second son born to Michael Coleman and Mary O'Donoghue, he was probably named for his mother's father as would have been customary. His older brother having probably been named for his father's father. Born on 18 December 1882 at 7 Scott's Square in Queenstown (now Cobh), he was christened Michael Christopher three days later on the 21st at Saint Colman's Cathedral in Cobh by the Rev J. Murphy with sponsors Mathias O'Callaghan (mother's cousin?) & Mary O'Callaghan (mother's cousin?). In his early years, he was sometimes referred to as Christopher but always as Christopher after circa 1910. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather before him, Christopher earned his living as a publican. By 1909, he was managing the hotel at 1 East Beach, Cobh. A hotel owned by his wife's family. Michael Christopher Coleman died on the 3rd of September in 1916, the date engraved on a tombstone in the cemetery of Cobh, County Cork. He was killed during the "Battle of the Somme" near the ruins of a church in Guillemont, France. Presumably, he is interred somewhere nearby. Guillemont is a tiny village about eighty-two miles north of Paris. It is approximately in the center of a triangle defined by the larger towns of Albert, Bapaume and Péronne. In late 1915 and early 1916, the French were sustaining terrible casualities at Verdun trying to hold off a German invasion. In the summer of 1916, the Allies began preparations for an offensive along the Somme River intended to relieve the unrelenting German pressure. It was to be mostly a British effort, - mostly - because the main French forces were still engaged at Verdun. The battle began in late June with artillery bombardment of the German position - this lasted for seven days. The bombardment was followed by infantry advancement which met stiff German resistance. Tremendous casualties were experienced by both sides. For a variety of reasons, the artillery bombardment had been largely ineffective. It would be over two months later, almost two weeks after Christopher's death, before the area was in undisputed British possession. At about that time, on September 15th, the British tank made its first appearance on the scene. *********** ]Christopher Coleman 's untimely death was a pivotal event in the history of this Coleman family. For had he not died at that time, his wife, Adelaide English Coleman, would not have crossed the Great Pond to be with her brother, the Reverend Joseph English , in Saint Louis, Missouri. And therefore, Geraldine Coleman would never have met Thomas Cody Jr, nor would Adelaide Coleman have met Karl Strobach. But why was Christopher Coleman in that place at that time? What was a thirty-three-year-old married man with three small children doing in the Army? The British Parliament had passed a Conscription Act in 1916 but it did not apply to Ireland and therefore, Christopher Coleman was a volunteer member of the Leinster Regiment. There was a lot of unrest in Ireland at the time. The central issue was: should Ireland be free or continue to be part of the British Empire? The ill-fated Easter Rebellion had occurred in Dublin earlier that year. And the unrest would eventually escalate into civil war in 1922. What were Christopher's motives in joining the British Army? Was he defending the Crown? Or fighting the Germans? Did he do it for the money? Or did he have some less obvious reason? |
