| Biography* | Cornelius "Con" Cody, 1886-1920: Believed to have been the twelfth born, Cornelius was named after his mother's brother. He was christened on 17 May 1886 at Clonoulty. Cornelius came to the United States with his mother at age 17 and pursued the American dream in the conventional way until his mid-20's. In 1910, at age 24, he was living with his mother and working as a shoemaker. After that, Con engaged in more dangerous, if not more profitable and more exciting, pursuits by joining the Cuckoo gang. The Cuckoo gang was an east side mob of mostly Irish that began to flourish in St. Louis in the 1920s. There were two other Irish gangs that also operated in St. Louis at this time. One was known as Willie Egan's Rats and the other was headed by "Jellyroll" Hogan. Supposedly the Cuckoos were named by none other than Al Capone the notorious Chicago gangster. The east siders had a reputation as fast and willing shooters who would fight anyone, including each other. Capone sent men from Chicago to St. Louis in an attempt to muscle into the action and the Cuckoos killed them. Capone is alleged to have said. "Those guys are cuckoo!" The name stuck. Cuckoo gangsters would continue to be a force in the St. Louis area underworld for over six decades. The last one died in 1980. Con was convicted of attempted burglary in 1916 and sentenced to one year in the workhouse. He was a known associate of Bryan Walsh who was killed at 23rd Street and Cass Avenue during a gang feud in the same year. Con was also associated with William Crowe who had been arrested by police several times in connection with gang shootings. In 1920, Con was arrested in Detroit and later identified as one of three men that held-up the Yellow Taxicab Company at 8324 Pine Street in St. Louis on the 9th of the previous March. On August 1st, he was returned to St. Louis, charged with complicity in the $1,700 payroll robbery, and released on bond the same day. He was rearrested on 20 August as a suspect in numerous other robberies and was released the same night on a $800 bond posted by bondsman John Kelly. While out on bail and awaiting trial, Con was living at 6209 Bartmer Avenue and working as a bartender in John Fitzgerald's saloon, 2745 Cass Avenue at Leffingwell. About 2 a.m. on Friday morning the 3rd of September 1920, Con was shot and killed by person or persons unknown (...or, as related in family lore, he was 'killed in the line of duty.'). Police believed the killing was the result of a gang feud. | |

| Biography* | Edmond J. Cody, 1874-????: Believed to have been the fifth born, Edmond was christened on 23 October 1874 at Clonoulty, County Tipperary. Edmond's father had a brother who would have been the namesake. Thomas Dwyer was one of Edmond's sponsors and was possibly an uncle. (Edmond's mother had a sister, Bridget, who was married to a Thomas Dwyer). As with four of his siblings, the date of Edmond's christening in the church record, 23 Oct 1874, precedes the birth date in the civil birth record. There is no other evidence to aid in resolving this discrepancy. By 1901, Edmond was living in England. He was boarding with an England born schoolmaster and his wife, Peter and Margaret Keeley, and was working as a clerk for a cotton broker. Their residence was at 2a Valley R'c, Liverpool, Walton-on-the-Hill, Lancashire. By the time of son Sidney's birth in 1902, Edmond and family lived at 69 Oak Leigh, West Derby, Lancashire. In 1907, the family lived at 192 salisbury Road, Everton North. Edmond was working as a bookkeeper. An article on brother Richard lists "Edward" as a member of the British Army during the first world war. Later, according to family lore, Edmond and wife lived in the caretaker's home on the grounds of Jesuit Mount Holyoke in Liverpool, England. Later still, they moved to Cardiff in North Wales. Edmond visited brother Michael in Saint Louis in 1938, probably on the sad occasion of their brother Thomas' death. They had not seen each other in forty-five years. |

| Biography* | Edward Cody, 1829-1907: Had always wondered why Michael Cody, the first of the Annesgrove Codys to immigrate to the U.S.A., chose to settle in Missouri. Although somebody has to be the first, and maybe Michael was, why did he choose Missouri? The church record of Michael's 1898 marriage to Johanna Broaders provided a clue. In this record, one of the witnesses to the marriage was listed as Benjamin Cody. Who could this be? Had never uncovered a Benjamin Cody connected to this family, until now. Intrigued by this, some time was spent researching Benjamin Cody and his family. Eventually was able to confirm that Benjamin's father Edward Cody and Annesgrove Patrick were brothers. So - Michael Cody, son of Annesgrove Patrick, settled in the Saint Louis parish of his uncle Edward. Edward Cody, born 1828 in County Tipperary, immigrated to the U.S.A. circa 1849 eventually settling in Madison County, Illinois. There, circa 1855, he married Margaret McMahan. After their marriage, Edward and Margaret moved to Clark County, Missouri where three children were born - John, Anna, and Edward. Their fourth, James, was born in Saint Louis, their fifth, Benjamin, was born in Peoria, Illinois. After Benjamin was born, the family returned to Saint Louis in the early 1870s, where the sixth, and last that we know about, was born - Netta. The family remained in Saint Louis. Some of them are planted in Calvary Cemetery, including at least, Edward and Margaret and children Edward, Anna, Benjamin and Netta. In 1860, Edward was working as a laborer. By 1870, he had been naturalized (i.e., became a U.S. citizen) and was working as a mechanic for a boiler maker. The family was living in the 6th ward of Peoria, Illinois. In 1880, he was working as a watchman and living at 2206 Papin Street in St Louis. By 1900, Edward was retired and living in a mortgaged home at 2648 Ann Avenue in St. Louis' 12th ward. Edward died on a Thursday in his 79th year. He was survived by his wife and four of his children. The funeral was held on Saturday from the residence followed by services at Saint Kevin's church. | Biography* | Edward Cody, 1861-1936: Edward was working in a rolling mill in 1880 and living at home with his parents. By 1900, he was working as a car inspector. At that time, he and his family were living in a mortgaged house at 1823 Childress Avenue in Saint Louis' 24th ward. He is listed at several addresses during the next decade including his parent's home at 2648 Ann Avenue and at 6313 Clayton Avenue, By 1910, Edward and Caroline owned a mortgaged home at 6252 Famous Avenue also in the 24th ward. By this time, he was working for the city as an inspector in the Sewer Department. Edward's list of addresses after 1910 is puzzling. In 1914, 1916, and 1918 he is listed back at 6313A Clayton Avenue. By 1919, the year his wife Caroline died, he is back - again - at 6252 Famous Avenue. In 1930, he is living with his daughter and son-in-law on Lloyd Avenue. A resident of 6448 Lloyd Avenue, Edward died on a Tuesday at age 74. He was survived by his four children, and a brother and father-in-law. The funeral was held from Saint James on Friday. Schmitt's funeral home, 3934 Russell, was in charge of arrangements. |

| Biography* | James F. Cody, 1879-1951: Believed to have been the eighth born. Named after father's brother? or mother's brother? There is neither civil birth record nor christening record for James. He lists his birth date as 24 September 1882 on his 1907 Declaration of Intent to become an American citizen and on his World War 1 draft registration. If this be true, James was born between the second Mary (Sr. M. Ethelbert) and Honora (Sr. M. Mercy) - which is possible, given the normal gestation period of homo sapiens , i.e. - 9 months. However, in the only document we have which lists both himself and Mary - the 1901 census - James is listed as being three years older than Mary! If the month and day of birth are correct but the year is wrong, then he was born in 1879, the year recorded here. James grew to a height of 5 feet-7 inches and weighed 156 pounds. He had fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes with no visible distinctive marks. When he came to the USA in 1903 on the same ship with his mother, the SS Compania, he was listed and processed separately. He had $32 in his pocket and his final destination was listed as Meadowbrook Hunt, Hempstead, Long Island there to join a friend named A. Brisbane. This destination was crossed-out and "Saint Louis, Missouri to meet his brother Michael" was written. James worked as electrician, lineman, inspector, and troubleshooter. He lived at a number of places in St Louis. In 1907, he lived at 18 South Spring Street. In 1909, at 4213 Kennerly. Sometime in 1910, he moved to 1808 Bacon. In 1914, at 5101 Ridge. By 1916, he lived at 4525 St. Ferdinand, where he lived until at least 1920. By 1930, he and Elizabeth had bought a house at 5261 Terry (?) Ave in St Louis' 20th Ward. At the time of his death, James lived at 4957 Margaretta. He died on a Thursday. He was survived by four sons, and five daughters. His funeral was held on the following Monday from Blessed Sacrament. Arrangements were made by Cullen and Kelly funeral home, 4386 Lindell Blvd. |

| Biography* | John Cody, ????-aft1867: Son Patrick Cody's 1867 civil marriage record listed his father as John Cody (living). This was the first evidence we had of the identity of Patrick's father. There are two John Codys listed in the index to Ireland death records after 1867 that are possibilities but neither are likely. One, John Cody, age 77, born 1802, married farmer, died 20 June 1879 in Modeshel, Mullinahone dist, informant Margaret Cody [she marked] also resident of Modeshel. The second is, John Cody, age 70, born 1798, widowed laborer, died 23 July 1868 Callan, County Kilkenny, informant William Kenney Callan workhouse. John was subsequently found in the church parish of Mullinahone where his marriage and the christenings of his children were recorded. He lived in the townland of Poulacapple and probably is not the John Cody whose death record lists his residence as Modeshil. John erected a large tombstone in Kilbride, Callan parish, Kilkenny in honor of his parents and his wife. Presumably he himself is interred there as well. |

| Biography* | John Cody, 1835-1916: According to family lore, John accompanied his brother Patrick to Australia in the 1850s for the purpose of working in the gold fields. John returned to Ireland and then went back to Australia. He was married in Australia at age 47 to a girl from the same parish in Ireland as himself. According to family anecdotes, John, 22 years older then his wife Mary, had held her in his arms when she was a baby. When John and Mary were married, both were living in Melbourne and John was working as a farmer. The following year they were living in Carlton. By 1886 at 1 Pelham Street there and by 1887 at 66 Leiscaster Street. In 1890, they were living at 547 King Street in West Melbourne and by 1893 at 129 Hawke Street. In 1916, John and family were living at 129 Barrow Street in Brunswick. During these years, John worked as a laborer, a farrier and for the railway. John, age 80 (his death cert listed his age as 75), died at home on a Wednesday of cardiac stenosis (sudden narrowing of the aortic valve) and dropsy (probably fluid retention caused by heart failure) . He was buried on Friday with his infant son Thomas (1886-1886). His wife Mary would join them in 1931. Harry Bourke of Cloneyross townland, the townland adjoining Annsgrove where John's brother Patrick lived in Clogher parish, County Tipperary, relates that years ago people from Australia visited the neighborhood looking for Cody relations from Annsgrove. This was at a time when Harry's mother was alive and he himself was living in England. Harry's mother, herself a Cody but of no verifiable connection to the Annsgrove Cody's just over the hill, sent them away. The visitors did not leave a name, address or other means of contact. |
