Biography* Johannah O'Brien, est1851-????:
Johanna O'Brien was the informant for her mother's 1894 civil death record. She could not sign her name (she marked with an 'x'). It is the only evidence of Johannah's existence. She was the only known child that was alive and living at home at the time of her mother's death. Have estimated that Johannah was born between brothers Michael and Patrick. Johannah is not listed in the 1901 census of Annagh. She is not to be found in the district of Churchtown (which includes at least parts of the civil parishes of Imphrick, Bregoge, Churchtown, Aglishdrinagh, and Kilbroney). Apparently neither of her brothers who were alive at the time of their parent's deaths came home to Annagh. In 1901, there were 11-houses in the townland (actually there are three townlands - Annagh North, Annagh South, and Annagh Bogs) and three of the eleven houses were uninhabited. Johannah certainly moved. It's also possible that she married, died or emigrated.

Biography* Katherine "Kate" O'Brien, 1843-1914:
Believe that this is the second Katherine born to Michael O'Brien and Mary McCarthy based on records in America. In 1880, for instance, she is listed with the Peter Walsh family and her age is recorded as seven-years-younger than her sister Nora O'Brien (Mrs Peter) Walsh. Katherine's recorded age is also three years younger and five years younger than the two Michael O'Briens in the household, one of whom is believed to be her brother. Other records in America of her birth year, inconsistent though they are, universally suggest that she was from five to eleven years younger than she would have been had she been born in 1843, the birth year of the Katherine for whom we have a christening record.Katherine immigrated to the U.S.A. circa 1880 before either of her parents died. After her sister died in 1895, Katherine continued to live with the Walshes, kept the household and raised her sister's children. She never married.

Katherine died at home on a Friday at age 59. Cause of death was pneumonia (lobar). The attending physician was Dr. S. A. Peake, 705 N Kingshighway. Her brother-in-law, Peter Walsh, with whom she had lived since before her sister died, was the informant. Katherine's funeral was held from the home at 3107 North Twelfth Street on Monday and then to Our Lady of Good Counsel. Harrigan & Sheahan Funeral Home, 2618 Morgan, was in charge.

Born at 2904 North 12th Street in the 3rd ward, Martin's christening sponsors were his uncle John Flynn and his first cousin Julia Begley. By the time he registered for the WWI draft in 1918, Martin and his widowed mother were living at 2900 North 12th Street. He had apparently been layed-off from his job because under employment he had entered - "expects to go back to work at Wagus Blair Co., 2017 Locust, St Louis". Martin, who was now using the name Martin J., was of medium height and build with gray eyes and brown hair. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on 03 September 1918 with the rank of Private (Pvt) and assigned to the 57 DEP BRIG (57th Depot Brigade?) until discharge. In 1920, Martin is living with his mother and is employed as a chauffeur in an auto repair shop. Sometime after this he was married for the first time. This wife, Harriet Soete, his 1st, died in 1927. In 1930, he and his mother have moved to 2820 22nd Street in the 18th ward. Martin is working as a chauffeur for an ice & fuel company. Martin married for the 2nd time sometime later. He was employed by the Stix-Baer and Fuller Company when he retired.

Martin, a resident of 2833 North Fourteenth, died on a Thursday at age 69. He was survived by two brothers Michael and John O'Brien and a stepson Samuel Overlease. He was predeceased by his 2nd wife. Martin's funeral was held on Tuesday from the Robert D Kinealy Mortuary, 2228 St Louis.

Biography* Michael O'Brien, c1799-1884:
Michael O'Brien and Mary McCarthy were married in 1837 at Doneraile, County Cork. By December of that year, they were living in Clashganniv townland, about 8-miles northwest of Doneraile, in Churchtown civil parish also in County Cork. By 1843, the O'Brien's had moved from Clashganniv to Annagh townland in the same parish. The land in Annagh is much wetter than the land in Clashganniv and less desirable as farmland. Michael O'Brien was a dairy farmer, so why would the O'Brien's move to less desirable farmland? The likely reason is that the landlord, Lord Egmont, was offered a higher rent for the Clashganniv property by someone else. Lord Egmont constructed a large house on the Clashganniv property in the 1840s and maybe this resulted in a demand for a higher rent. In all probability, Michael and Mary could not meet the higher rent and were forced to move. The family continued to live in Annagh until both Michael and Mary had passed from this vale.

Michael, 85 years-of-age, died on a Saturday. His death record lists him as a married farmer. The informant on the record was his daughter Deborah O'Brien also a resident of Annagh.

Biography* Michael O'Brien, 1853-1900:
Michael's christening sponsors were Cors Bresnahan & Mgt Keane. He immigrated to the United States circa 1882. When his first two chidlren were born, the family was living at 836 Brooklyn. By 1891, they were living at 2904 North 12th Street in St. Louis 3rd ward.

Michael was shot by Conductor Geroge Bradshaw of the Transit company's Bellefontaine division on Monday night, 29 October 1900. The shooting climaxed an altercation between the two men that started on the streetcar and ended in the street after the car had stopped. George Bradshaw was arrested on a warrant charging him with assault to kill and was subsequently identified by Michael from his bed at City Hospital. Michael was pistol whipped before being shot twice. One bullet fractured a bone in his right hip. The other bullet created a flesh wound in his left thigh.

Biography* Michael F. O'Brien, 1887-1972:
Michael's christening sponsors included a Michael O'Brien - his father?, or the 'other' Michael O'Brien? Born at 836 Brooklyn Street by 1891, the family lived at 2904 12th Street in St Louis 3rd ward. In 1900, Michael was workings as a cash boy for a dry goods. In 1910, still living with his mother, Michael was working at Bucks Stove & Range Company. When he registered for the WWI draft in 1917, Michael listed dependents of a wife and child. Don't believe Michael married Ethel Pickens until 1920 or later. Ethel's marriage to Michael was her second and she had five children from that first marriage. Don't know anything about the wife nor the child mentioned in the 1917 registration which listed his address as 2010 Mallinckrodt, St Louis. He is of short stature and medium build with brown eyes and dark brown hair. Michael works as a steel range worker at the stove company.
[NOTE: In 1920, There is a Michael O'Brien, married to Mary, five years younger and born in Austria, living in a quadplex at 1219a Ann Avenue in St. Louis 9th ward. Michael works as a packer at the U. S. Army quartermaster depot. <<-- our Michael?]

In 1930, Michael and Ethel are renting as 2565 Benton Street in the 18th ward for $18/month. He is working as a stove assembler. In 1938, when he is listed as the informant on his brother Robert's death cert, Michael is living at 4204 St Louis Avenue.

Michael, age 84, a resident of Granite City, Madison County, Illinois died on a Thursday. He is buried with wife Ethel who died in 1948.

Biography* Patrick O'Brien, 1848-????:
Believed to have been born circa 1841. No christening recorded in Churchtown records. Patrick O'Brien, a full age bachelor farmer, son of Michael, and resident of Ballyhane, married Ellen Frawley, a full age spinster, resident of Lackeroe and, daughter of Thomas Frawley, a deceased farmer. The marriage was performed on 19 Feb 1876 by P. J. Savage with witnesses Michael O'Brien and Mary Frawley.

According to family lore, Patrick and Ellen came to the United States circa 1888 but returned to Ireland. Patrick apparently did not return to the home farm in Annagh when his mother died in 1894. But, by 1901, he and Ellen were living in Ballyhane where Patrick had been living at the time of their 1876 marriage. Patrick and Ellen occupied a four-room stone house with thatch roof and three windows in front. There were seven out-buildings housing at least one horse, two cows, calves, chickens, and pigs. They were both alive and living in the same place in 1911.
