| Biography* | Hannah Begley, 1879-1984: Hannah consistently under-reported her age - on her application for citizenship, - when applying for a job teaching adult education and - in her application for a Social Security Number. The Shandrum church records list her christening date as 19 October 1879 while Ireland civil birth records list her birthdate as 6 November 1879. Hannah routinely gave her birthdate as 18 October 1888. The day and month Hannah quoted are reasonable and probably correct. The year she gave, however, 1888, was the year she immigrated - a birth of sorts! A new country, a new life, a new birthyear. Hannah's christening sponsors were John Bowls and Kate Begley. Hannah told younger family members that she stayed with some cousins named Downey when she first came over (to St Louis? or to the States?). Her sister Nora claimed that she, at least, visited a relative in Johnstown, Pennsylvania upon arrival in the States. A search of 1900 census records found no Ireland born Downeys within 35-miles of Johnstown. In 1910, Hannah was living with her parents at 2811 North 23rd Street in St Louis' 18th ward. Hannah was 5 feet 4½ inches tall, weighed 120 pounds, had blue eyes, black hair and fair complexion. She was a milliner (hat maker) and sold hats for Famous-Barr department store in Saint Louis. She was living with her mother on Taylor Avenue in 1920 and with her sister and brother-in-law at 6458 Lloyd Avenue in 1930. Hannah died on a Tuesday at the St. Anne Home, 12349 DePaul Drive, Bridgeton. Her funeral was held from there on Friday. |

| Biography* | Honora "Nora" Begley, 1874-1946: Nora was born in Knawhill and was christened at the Milford church (Freemount parish) by W McA. Her christening sponsors were her uncle Pat O'Brien and Johanna Harstouge. According to family lore, Nora was a student in England when her parents left Ireland for the USA. She arrived in Philadelphia at an unknown date and was in Johnstown, Pennsylvania visiting an aunt during the flood. Whether Nora was a student in England or not, and whether she visited an aunt in Johnstown or not, she actually arrived in the United States with her parents in 1888. The Johnstown flood occurred on 31 May 1889 so that part of the story is possible. Her sister Hannah related that they stayed with some Downey cousins when they first arrived. And although there were Ireland born Downeys in Pennsylvania in the 1900 census none of them were near Johnstown. In 1910, Nora was living with her parents at 2811 N 23rd Street in St Louis' 18th ward. In 1920, she was living with her mother on Taylor Avenue in the 22nd ward. In 1930, Nora was living, along with her mother and sister Hannah, with her siser and brother-in-law Julia and Thomas Hasty at 6458 Lloyd Avenue. Nora had been naturalized and was working as a saleslady at a ready-to-wear store. She died on Saturday at age 72 from chronic pulmonary tuberculosis. At the time of Nora's death, her residence was at 5512 Ashland. She was survived by one brother and two sisters. Nora's funeral was held on Tuesday the 31st of December from Notre Dame de Loudes church. |

| Biography* | John Begley, 1833-1916: The Begleys were from Shandrum church parish in County Cork. Sometime after 1838 the family moved to the adjacent church parish of Milford. There was a John Begley christened in Shandrum Parish, County Cork in 1833. This date is much earlier than any other birth date evidence we have for John. Mayhaps there were two John Begley's? This is the only one in the Shandrum records but there may have been another born after the family moved to Milford Parish. John worked as a dairyman in Ireland. In May 1888, John Begley, his wife Mary O'Brien, and their seven ypungest children, including an infant male named Gabriel, boarded the steamship British Prince8 at Liverpool, England under the command of Ship's Master S. Nowell. John's declared intent was to become a permanent settler of the U.S.A. John and family were the only passengers of the 989 on board whose final destination was listed as Saint Louis, Missouri. The ship arived at the Port of Phildelphia, Pennsylvania on the 12th of June. John, age 83, died on a Sunday. His funeral was held on Monday from Sacred Heart Church, Saint Louis. - The British Prince was built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast in 1882 for British Shipowners. She was a 3,871 gross ton vessel, length 420.1 feet x beam 42.2 feet, one funnel, four masts, single screw and a speed of 12 knots. I, Ted Finch, have no information on her passenger capacity. Launched on 4/2/1882, she was chartered to American Line and sailed on her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Philadelphia on 12/4/1882. She commenced her last voyage from Philadelphia to Liverpool on 28/3/1894 and in 1895 was chartered to the Dominion Line. She made one round voyage from Liverpool to Quebec and Montreal for this company commencing 1/5/1895 and was then sold to French owners. She was renamed Les Andes and was finally scrapped in June 1908. [Posted to both Ship Lists by Ted Finch - 21 November 1997]

| Biography* | John I. Begley, 1870-1939: According to their civil birth records, the first four children of John Begley and Mary O'Brien were born in Crough. The births were recorded in the Milford district of Kanturk union but the place Crough has not been identified. There is no christening record for John in Shandrum parish. He came to the United States in 1883 at age 12 with siblings Catherine and Michael. They arrived at the port of New York on 18 June 1883 aboard the SS Helvetia. There were no other Begleys on the ship and it's assumed that the children traveled unaccompanied by an adult. In 1900, John and his wife Annie were living with her parents at 4429 20th Street in Saint Louis' 1st ward. John was working as a pattern maker for a stove company. In 1910, John and Annie were renting a duplex at 4108 20th Street. In 1920, they were renting at 4400 19th Street and John had risen to the level of a finisher at the stove company. By 1930, John and Annie had moved to Berkeley, Alameda County, California and were renting for $30/month at 920 Pardee Sreet. Their son Howard and his wife Marie were living with them and their daughter Mary Silva was living at 916 Pardee Street. John was working as a pattern finisher at a stove factory. |

Mary was christened on 1 March 1873 at Shandrum, County Cork with sponsors James Bowles and Hanna Brien (mother's sister?). She left Ireland with her parents for Saint Louis, Missouri via Liverpool on the steamship British Prince and arrived at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 12 Jun 1888. Mary was a member of the Married Ladies Confraternity. She died of heart disease on a Tuesday at St. Mary's hospital. Mary resided with her son Thomas at 4601 Penrose. Her funeral was held on Saturday the 9th from Holy Rosary Church. Stroot & Carroll funeral home, 4600 Natural Bridge Avenue, was in charge of arrangements. Fourteen Monsignors and about 125 priests were in attendance. Absolution was given by Bishop George Donnelly. The funeral was delayed in the hopes that her son, Monsignor John P. Cody, would be able to officiate. He was in Ireland attending John Cardinal Glennon and was expected to return on Friday the 8th. Unfortunately, Cardinal Glennon himself died on Saturday. The Cardinal's death was announced a few hours before Mary's funeral began. |

| Biography* | Michael Begley, 1875-1928: As seems typically the case, recordings of Irish births are inconsistent, and Michael's records are no exception. The anchor for us, as always, is the christening record. Not that the priests have proven to be meticulous record keepers but - it's a stake in the ground. Michael was christened on 11 March 1875. His civil birth record lists 03 April 1875, his 1915 Declaration of Intent to become a United States citizen, his 1918 Petition for Naturalization and his 1918 Registration for the Draft all list 20 March 1874 (Ah - some consistency there!). Michael emigrated Ireland in 1900, seven years after the death of his mother, and arrived at the Port of New York in New York City on 01 August 1900 aboard the Oceanic from Queenstown (Cobh), County Cork, Ireland. He was listed on the ship's passenger manifest as a single male from Liscarroll with $30 and a ticket to Saint Louis, Missouri to meet his uncle J. Begley of 1127 St. Louis Ave. In 1910, Michael, still living with his uncle, is incorrctly listed as a son. The uncle's family had moved to 2811 North 23rd Street in Saint Louis 18th ward. Michael is working as a shoemaker for a shoehouse. Declaring his Intention to become a U.S. citizen in the Circuit Court of Saint Louis on 04 September 1915, he incorrectly lists the Olympic as the ship upon which he left Queenstown (Cobh). Michael lists his residence as 2827 North 23rd Street, his occupation as shoeworker and his physical description as being of dark complexion, standing 5ft-10in tall, weighing 155 lbs, with black hair and brown eyes. Two years six months later, on 22 April 1918, Michael files a Petition for Naturalization. He lists the same residence, occupation shoemaker, and further declares that he is not married, has no children and left Queenstown on 25 July 1900 (aboard the Olympic), arrived in New York City on 01 August 1900 and in Saint Louis nine days later. Michael's petition was witnessed by John O'Brien, unemployed, of 1808 Bacon Street, Saint Louis (there is an as yet unproven suspicion that John O'Brien is related to Michael's aunt Mary O'Brien Begley) and by Thos J Cody, city fireman, of 3021A North Taylor Avenue, Saint Louis (Thomas Cody is married to one of uncle John Begley's daughters). On 12 September of 1918, Michael registered for the draft (World War I). His address has changed to 3100 North Taylor, St Louis, he is employed by International Shoe Co. on Jefferson and his physical decription is tall in height, of medium build with brown eyes and black hair. His nearest relative is his father Timothy in County Cork, Ireland. By 1928, Michael is living at 6458 Lloyd Avenue, St Louis. Michael, age 53, died of pulmonary tuberculosis on a Thursday at Mount Saint Rose sanitarium. He was attended by Dr. Jaconua Schlecker of 3515 South Grand, St Louis. Michael's funeral was held at St James church on Monday. Cullen-Kelly of 1416 North Taylor Avenue were the undertakers. |
